About 130 million books come out in the human history. A reader will read at most 6,000 books in his life. Most of them won’t be so much fun or very unforgettable. Books are like people. We meet many but fall in love with a small part of them.
Maybe we will only remember about thirty books. They will be different for each of us, but they affect (影响) us in similar ways.
_______________ When we see a bird flying in the sky, we have a great feeling, but we may find it hard for us to use words to show our feelings and finally we just say, “That’s so nice.” However, a good writer can describe it wonderfully.
Great writers build bridges for us so that we can talk with each other. They depict the similar experiences of us, and show us how we can share the same thing with each other in a different way.
Great writers also help us to feel. By reading a book, we meet someone. Probably she is very beautiful, young, smart but dying, and we feel sad about her pain (疼痛) and the unfairness (不公平) of the world. Or maybe she is poor but hard-working, and we find the spirit to face the difficulties in life through her story.

Mrs Green: Certainly, now I give you a cake. You don’t like it but you won’t say it. Instead, you say “No, thanks I’m not hungry.” That’s a white lie.

An ABC is a Chinese, but was born in the United States. Sometimes, people call an ABC a “banana person”. A banana is yellow outside. So, when a person is a “banana”, he or she is white inside—thinking like a Westerner and yellow outside—looking like a Chinese.
Usually, ABCs know little about China or the Chinese language. Some of them don’t speak Chinese. But if ABCs cannot speak Chinese, can we still call them Chinese people? Yes, of course. They are overseas(海外的)Chinese. These people may be citizens(公民)of another country like the US, Canada or Singapore. But they have Chineseblood. Their parents, grandparents or even great-grandparents were from China. They all have black eyes and black hair.
But they are not Chinese citizens. They are people of the People’s Republic of China. For example, we all know the famous scientist C. N. Yang(杨振宁). He got the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1957. Chinese people love him. But he is an American citizen.

The program for International Student Assessment(PISA), which aims to evaluate education systems worldwide by testing the skills and knowledge of 15-year-old students, carried out a survey of students’ ability to work together in groups. They found that students who do well on tests by themselves are also likely to be better at working with other people.
This finding was true for many countries. Students in Japan, South Korea, Finland and Canada, where test scores are high, also did well in working together to solve problems. But this was not the case for every country. Chinese students, who usually can get high scores as well, displayed just common collaborative(合作的)skills.
“One reason might be that Chinese parents and teachers focus too much on grades, said Zhao Zhongxin, former vice president ( 前副经理 ) of the Chinese Family Education Association. “Students have a lot of exam pressure and they regard school as a place for competition.”
“However, collaborative skills are very important for preparing students today’s society,” he added. “Luckily, more Chinese parents and teachers are realizing the importance of this and are thinking of ways to help students improve it.”
Another interesting finding from the PISA survey was that girls are most likely to be better than boys at working together. They said girls show more positive attitude( 态 度 ) toward relationships, which means they are more willing to listen to others’ opinions.
PISA also found that the classroom environment tends to influence how well students collaborate. In classes where there are a lot of activities that require communication, such as class discussion, students would have better attitudes towards collaborating.
