Happy Rain on a Spring Night
DuFu
Good rain knows its time right;
It will fall when comes spring.
With wind it steals in night;
Mute, it moistens (使湿润) each thing.
O’er wild lanes (小路) dark cloud spreads;
In boat a lantern looms.
Dawn sees saturated reds;
The town’s heavy with blooms.
Translated By Xu Yuanchong
This famous poem, with four couplets (对句), was written by Du Fu (712-770, Tang Dynasty) when he was living and farming in Chengdu. This farming experience taught him to be thankful to nature.
The very first word, “good”, shows the poet’s joy and love for the spring rain. The rain is good because it “knows” the proper time to come. Here the poet uses personification (拟人), as if the rain was smart enough to come in time for the farmers’ busy season.
When the rain comes, it appears during the night without making any noise. Unlike the summer storms, the spring rain finishes its task without being known.
In the third couplet, the poet describes peaceful scene to us. In the night sky, the clouds look dark and heavy. It’s a sign that there will be enough rain during the night. The light from the riverboat makes the dark scene a bit bright.
Lastly, the poet starts to imagine. Tomorrow morning, he thinks, the city of Chengdu will become beautiful when all of the flowers bloom (盛开) after the rain.

The first secret of happiness is to enjoy the simple things in life. Too often, we spend so much time thinking about the future---for example, getting into a college or getting a good job--that we fail to enjoy the present. You should enjoy life’s simple pleasures, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music, or spending time with close friends. People who have several close friends often live happier and healthier lives.
Another secret to living a happy life is to be active, and have hobbies where you forget your problems and time. Many people experience this dancing, or playing a sport, such as swimming. You can forget about your problems, and only think about the activity. Finally, many people find happiness in helping others. Studies show that people feel good when they spend their time helping others. If you want to feel happier, do good things for someone. You can help a friend with his or her studies, go shopping to buy food for an elderly person, or simply help out around the house by washing the dishes.

The old man: Where are you from, boy?
The little prince: What’s that big book? What are you doing?
The old man: I’m a geographer. The book is about all the seas, rivers, mountains and…
The little prince: Your planet is very beautiful. Does it have any mountains?
The old man: I don’t know.
The little prince: How about rivers and lakes?
The old man: I have no idea, either.
The little prince: Why? You are a geographer!
The old man: Right! But…Well, where are you from?
The little prince: My planet is very far away from yours. It’s very small. There is only a rose and three volcanoes (火山) on my planet. Not so interesting, right? That’s why I want to visit other planets.
The old man thinks for a minute. Then he says to the little prince, “The Earth can be a good place for you to visit.” The little prince says thanks and leaves.
