“Chinese medical teams are spreading warmth and love in Africa. I hope one day I can help others like them,” said Appiah Priscilla, an international student from Africa. She said this after learning about the great work of Chinese medical teams.
The first Chinese medical team was set up in 1962 and sent to Africa the next year. Since then, China has sent over 23 thousand team members to over 45 African countries, treating over 240 million patients. Today, Chinese medical teams are in many parts of Africa. They’re trying hard to save lives and help Africans keep healthy.
Their work is hard but meaningful. The working conditions are poor. For example, during operations, the power sometimes may go out, but the members don’t give up working. They take out their smartphones and turn on the flashlights (手电筒) to make sure the operations go on. Many places are short of doctors and nurses. Chinese medical teams not only save patients’ lives but also help train doctors and nurses. Africans are so thankful to the medical team members that they call the members “angels (天使) in white”.
With its 62-year non-stop medical help to Africa, China has helped ameliorate the health and happiness of Africans. As China and Africa work hard to build a community with a shared future, Chinese medical teams play an important role in making it.

In October 2016, the government (政府) chose our neighborhood to be part of a pilot (试点的) program for garbage sorting. To help the program run successfully, we set up a volunteer team. I am one of the volunteers. However, several of us didn’t know if we could lead people in the building to change their habits.
We began with the usual ways. We handed out notices around the neighborhood. We also went door to door to tell people how to sort garbage. However, they made many mistakes. For example, many didn’t know wet rubbish meant food waste. Instead, they thought it meant rubbish that was wet. Some even refused to sort their garbage.
As a result, we volunteers had to do lots of sorting ourselves. At the same time, we went around explaining the rules. We kept talking to those people who refused to sort their garbage. We let them know we could help to sort garbage for them. It was a matter of time and patience. We believed they would finally change their mind.
Six months later, we were successful in changing people’s mind. People in my building began sorting their garbage. Some even joined us to help us.
I think face-to-face talks played an important role. Sometimes, these talks led to conflicts, but they were much more effective (有效的) than handing out notices. It was interesting to see what happened. I hope everyone knows garbage sorting is good for them.

Volunteering is good for your resume. Your experience of being a volunteer gives the interviewer(面试官)a clearer picture of who you are. Many people agree that volunteer experience is an important reason for giving someone a job.
By volunteering, you encourage others to make good changes. Serving food at a food bank and working with teenagers in an after-school activity are also great examples to make others love volunteering.
Meeting people who have similar interests and ideas becomes easy. The way someone chooses to spend his or her free time shows the person’s values(价值观). Sharing the same values while helping others is a great way to make new friends.
“Doing good” is important. Every day we may watch or hear sad news and stories. However, volunteering is a good way to make the world a better place. Even a simple thing can make a difference. If we all join together, those simple things can add up to a big change!

On the day of the interview, I got up at 6:00 in the morning. I got to the interview place without having breakfast. I was the 16th interviewee(应聘者) and the 12th was a short ordinary-looking girl. I nodded to her.
I didn’t expect the interview would last so long.
After a while, a worker came in and handed me a bottle of milk and a piece of bread.
Luckily, I got the job. The first day I went to work, I was surprised to see the girl there. She also got the job. Later I asked her why she got the job. She said with a smile, “That day when I bought you the food, an interviewer went to the toilet with papers in hands.

Each year there are at least five million people around the world who develop serious(流感) and almost half a million deaths. When someone we know gets the flu virus (病毒), we expect them to be very careful not to pass it on to others. Doctors and nurses working with flu patients also need to protect themselves from the virus. But what is the best way to do this? This is the question that Professor Jonathan Van-Tam is trying to answer. He wants to find out how flu is transmitted (传播), so that he can stop doctors and nurses getting sick.
Since 2008 Van-Tam has been in charge of an Intentional group studying how the flu virus travels. For the first time, 41 volunteers agreed to live together. They lived in a clinic(诊所)in Cambridgeshire for two weeks, where they came into contact with the flu virus.
Van-Tam explains their methods. "Everyone lives together in the small space for four days. Some wear face masks, and wash hands every 15 minutes, but some have no protection. "
In his way we can study who catches the flu and which ways of transmitting flu are important.
The experiment (试验) is not simple. At the moment the team are working on three studies.
Van-Tam believes that if this type of study works well the results will help decide what protection people need working in hospital with flu patients around the world. And perhaps it could decline the number of deaths from flu each year.

From February 17, more than 32,000 doctors and nurses from all over China have been sent to Hubei, the center of the epidemic. They are working under unusual conditions, unimaginable stress and intensive(高强度的) schedules.
In hospitals, doctors and nurses work for long hours, usually six hours in a row. Many of them have deep marks on their faces from wearing masks and goggles(护目镜). They also choose to wear diapers(纸尿裤), as it takes nearly an hour to take their protective uniforms on and off. When they are racing time to save lives, every second matters.

Why Is Mona Island Unusual?
Mona Island is very small. The government of Puerto Rico takes care of the island and has made it a natural reserve. That means the island’s animals and plants are protected from being harmed by people. Mona Island is different from most places because people are not allowed to live there. Only a few park rangers are able to stay.
The park rangers’ job is to keep Mona Island safe and beautiful. They insist that rules be followed. One rule is that only 100 people at a time can visit the island. That way, the park rangers can make sure the land and animals remain safe.
What Is There to See on Mona Island?
One thing that most people enjoy is getting to see the Mona Island iguana. This type of reptile (爬行动物) lives only on Mona Island. Almost 2,000 of these iguanas live on Mona Island.
People also come to the island to get a close-up view of many kinds of fish and other sea life. They can swim far below the surface. They use special equipment to be able to breathe underwater. The water is almost transparent. Through the clear water, divers can see the bright colors of the fish.
Visitors can also explore caves. Some of the caves even have paintings and drawings on the walls. This artwork was made by the Arawak and Taíno Indians who lived on the island hundreds of years ago.
After a full day of fun activities, visitors can settle in, listen to the night sounds, and view the stars in the huge sky.
