In America, seldom do you go anywhere without hearing a principle called WIN-WIN. It sounds strange to me at first because throughout my childhood, I have always been taught to try everything possible to win an upper-hand, rather than to help other people win. However, as time goes by, I have gradually understood the essence (真谛) of WIN-WIN principle—it is the way of winning on both sides.
When I was little, I used to play Chinese checkers (跳棋) which includes two basic tactics (战术): One is to create paths for yourself; the other is to prevent your rival﹙对手﹚ moving. Players may use these two totally different ways in the game, but the key for the player to win is to continuously create paths for him even if his rival may take advantage of it. Finally he can always reach the goal a few steps ahead of the other player.
In the 1990s, a strategy﹙战略﹚ called WIN-WIN became widespread in the western world. Its aim is to achieve your success while giving other people some advantages, so there is no real loser. One example of using the WIN-WIN principle is the voluntary system in the US. Most Americans support the spirit of voluntary contribution. In the US, schools and children organizations usually encourage and support kids to take part in community activities so that the voluntary spirit can be ____in their minds from childhood.
In China, it’s quite usual that some people are too selfish and never take people’s interests into consideration, while someone who really has courage to do something for the public is often called “foolish” or “silly”. Actually helping other people can be of great delight for the helper, for he can also learn something useful for his life such as sympathy, care, devotion, etc. So only if you take other people’s interests into consideration , you can make sure to win what you want.
1. The purpose of the author in writing the passage is _______.
A.to tell us the cultural differences between China and the US.
B.to tell us the different educational systems in the US and China.
C.to tell us the importance and meaning of WIN-WIN.
D.to show that WIN-WIN is popular in the US and China.
2. What is the author’s attitude(态度) towards WIN-WIN?
A.Criticism(批评).B.Encouragement.
C.Disagreement.D.Doubt.
3. The underlined word “enrooted” in the third paragraph means ____.
A.removedB.controlled
C.plantedD.influenced

It’s not news that there can be many problems of latchkey living.

Researchers find that 51% of “latchkey kids” are doing poorly in school. Meanwhile, the study by the Carnegie Council on teenager development shows that children going home alone after school for 11 hours or more each week are twice as likely to use drugs and alcohol.

Are there any positives of latchkey living? Yes, says Renee Peterson Trudeau, an internationally recognized life balance coach. “Some of the most successful people were latchkey kids growing up,” she says. “Young people who are allowed more freedom to be on their own often become more independent.”

Are you a parent of “latchkey kids”? Here are some tips for you to make your children’s home-alone life a safe, growing opportunity.

●Keep in touch. Always make sure your child can reach you. For example, have your child call you when he gets home from school, and then call him as you’re leaving work.

●Keep busy. It’s not a bad idea to have your kids feed the pet or water the flowers before you get home. Chores teach them responsibility.

●Keep an eye. If you have a neighbor, kindly ask her if she could pay attention from time to time. This makes you know whether your child is telling the truth.

●Keep communication. Take the time to keep up with how your kid’s afternoons are going.

Make sure he is clear of your time-alone rules for him, especially around screen time and homework.

“If you follow the suggestions above, you shouldn’t feel regretful for being a working parent.” Renee says. “They are more confident around problem solving.”

【推荐2】What is one thing that would help parents understand their kids better? More than 8,000 US kids answered this question in an online poll (投票) by KidsHealth.org.
Many US kids — two out of three — said they get along with their parents. But that doesn’t mean they never disagree. In fact, most kids reported arguing with their parents, at least sometimes. And two out of five kids said arguments sometimes even include shouting at each other.
“It’s certainly normal to disagree and argue,” says Darcy Lyness, an American expert. “But it’s also important to learn how to do so respectfully (尊重地). Be patient. Don’t use a raised, angry voice.”
And not surprisingly, three out of four kids said they had lied to their parents sometimes. Many said they lie so they would not get in trouble or disappoint their parents. According to Lyness, lying isn’t just wrong. It can actually have bad results. Telling the truth builds trust.
Telling the truth, says Lyness, shows maturity (成熟). But older kids actually lie more often than younger ones. Kids aged 12 to 14 not only said they lie more, but they also reported having less fun, feeling less close and not getting along as well with their parents.
According to Lyness, those feelings are common. As kids become more independent (独立), they have more areas of disagreement with their parents. But it doesn’t have to be that way. “Kids and parents get along differently at each stage of the journey,” she says. “As kids grow and change, it is important for everybody to change.”
