A group of students at the Huazhong University of Science and Technology have helped families find their loved ones.
The volunteer team of students has been helping many parents look for their children by restoring (恢复) over 1,000 photos. The team was set up by Sheng Jianzhong four years ago. He first thought to restore photos of missing children when he saw a missing child notice with a poor-quality image (劣质图像) in 2020. He wanted to help the parents restore their images. With the clear photos, the parents can post them on the Internet to find their missing children. But it cannot be completed by one person alone, he needed a team. Luckily, many students volunteered to join in Sheng’s project.
In December 2021, father Sun Haiyang finally found his son after 14 years of searching. Sheng’s team played an important role in finding the boy, and Sun expressed his thanks to them when they met. It has helped 11 missing children find their families—nine in 2022 and two in 2023.
Sometimes the families don’t even know the team’s help. “But we are happy for them,” said Zhang Shaoyun, a member of the team.
In the future, Sheng plans to build a better team to run the program. “It would train more young people to work for good causes,” he said.

I was at the shop last night and saw a homeless woman with a trolley (手推车) full of her belongings. She was sitting inside the shop to keep warm. I went up to her and tried to give her money for something to eat, but she refused. She explained that if she had too much money on her, other homeless people might steal it while she was sleeping.
I explained that I just wanted to help her and asked if I could buy her something warm. Again, she said no. She thanked me and said how thankful she was that I could offer help. We introduced ourselves, and she said that when I saw her next time, she would accept help. What an amazing woman! The lady taught me an important lesson: Not all homeless people accept money or help if they believe they’ve received enough that day. I look forward to meeting her again.
Walking out into the cold night, I met a homeless man who was freezing (冻僵的). I gave the money to him. He appeared to have had a drinking problem, but I was glad that he accepted my help.
I left with a special feeling. I always try to understand what it’s like to be in a homeless person’s shoes or to imagine if they were my children facing such difficulties. I learned how lucky I am and how thankful I should be for what I have.

【推荐3】Can thinking about yourself too much make you sick? Many psychologists (心理学家) now think so. “Self-focus” means thinking about yourself.
In the old days psychologists used to tell patients with depression (抑郁) to pay more attention to themselves. They wanted patients to talk about their problems and feelings. They thought that “self-focus” would cure (治疗) depression. Then, some psychologists began wondering if they were wrong. They realized that depressed people talked about themselves much more than non-depressed people.
Psychologists began to wonder if it is possible for “self-focus” to cause depression. So psychologists began thinking of different ways to treat depressed people. They thought that patients would feel better ________. Some even thought that they could cure depression by having patients focus on other people.
Scientists at the University of Michigan studied older men. Some of the men volunteered to help others; others did not volunteer. The men who volunteered lived much longer. Duke University scientists studied patients who had heart disease. Some patients were told to volunteer. The patients who volunteered were happier and healthier than the others.
As a result of this research, scientists began recommending (推荐) volunteerism. University leaders think community service can improve the lives of students. Some medical doctors recommend volunteerism to their patients.
Each of us experiences pain, sadness, and loneliness. One of the best ways to overcome these feelings is to help others who are experiencing difficulty. Thinking about others all the time is not going to solve all your problems, but it is nice to know that by helping others, you can help yourself, too.

On October 7th, 36 students in Linyi, Shandong Province, wore beautiful clothes in a show. Their clothes were made of all kinds of things.

Students had lots of good ideas. Some found used things, like old clothes, to make new dresses.
“We hope to save energy. Our world is short of energy. So I don’t want to just throw old things away,” said Xie Jing at Linyi Art School.
