I called the phone company twice that day. They told me they had checked the phone line and got the phone connected. The old woman was so thankful that she was in tears, hugging me for my help. After that, I called her every day to make sure she was fine.

Just being able to help her in her time of danger filled my heart with such love and happiness. It does not take much time or effort to help someone like a neighbor. Sometimes, all that is needed a smile, a hug or a phone call.

Turning a near death experience into something good is what the Kitchens did. At the time, there was no penalty for driving past a school bus with flashing red lights. But later, because of the Kitchens efforts (努力), a new law about school bus safety was passed — A driver must stop at least 20 feet away from school buses when their red lights are flashing, or he will get fined.

Even about 30 years later, Elisha still remembers the accident. “Every time I see a bus, I can’t stop thinking of the accident. I just don’t want what happened to me to happen to kids again,” she said.

Elisha’s family now has moved to be near the capital of Michigan. They hope that they can do more to help keep kids safe.

Plastic is burned outdoors and chemical water is poured into rivers. Greenpeace, an environmental group, has found the air, the earth and the rivers in Guiyu badly polluted.

This year, China presents a new protection law, the strictest one we have ever had. Computer companies like Lenovo and Dell will be asked to take back their old computers. This is because the companies that make computers know best how to deal with them safely. Hopefully, the problem with e-waste will be solved in the near future.
