At twenty-one, Lincoln left home. He soon received a law license and became a lawyer. People trusted him and began to call him “Honest Abe”.
During the following years, he took a more active part in polities. Soon he was not only a highly respected lawyer but also a well-known politician. He was elected the sixteenth president of the United States in 1860, and in the next year the Civil War broke out.
The Civil War was between the southern states that wanted to leave the Union and form their own country, and northern states that wanted to keep all the states as one country. The southern states wanted to keep the laws that allowed them to own slaves. Both the northern states and President Lincoln wanted to get rid of those laws. On April 9, 1865, the Civil War ended and all slaves were set free.
Less than a week later, on April 14, 1865, Abraham Lincoln was shot at the Ford Theater in Washington D.C. He died the next day from his wounds.

To become a better person, we should go to school every day. So how can we become powerful and start changes in our own life? Perhaps we can get some tips from the US First Lady Michelle Obama. During her visit to China, from March 20–26, Mrs. Obama shared her views on education with students.
The first lady encouraged Chinese students to aim high and get a good education. In Chengdu No. 7 High School, she told students that having poor roots doesn’t matter A long as you work hard.
Mrs. Obama said her family was not rich. Like many Chinese students, her parents had big dreams for her. She felt the weight of her parents’ sacrifices (牺牲) on her shoulders and worked hard to make them proud.
Persevering was not easy, though. Sometimes she had to wake up at 4:30 a.m. and study late into the night. “But whenever I got tired or discouraged, I would remember something my mother always told me,” she said, “A good education is something that ①take, no, from, can, one, away, you.”
Mrs. Obama also encourages Chinese students to study abroad. “As the Chinese B goes, “②It is better to travel 10,000 miles than to read 10,000 books,” she said. “③在学校取得好成绩是不够的。It’s also important to have real experience with languages, cultures and societies different from your own,” she noted.

It only takes one night to become a star in the Internet time.
This is true of Tamdrin , a 20-year-old Tibetan man who recently drew a lot of attention after a cameraman posted a short video of him on Douyin. Tamdrin lives in Litang County in Garze Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichun Province.
People say they like his sun-kissed skin, mop(蓬乱) of brown hair and comforting smile. They say Tamdrin has “stars in his eyes” and is different from young male idols (偶像) who have perfectly clean faces and fine makeup(妆容).
Within five days, Tamdrin got over 2.5 million followers on Douyin. After he became famous, some companies invited him to become a professional online celebrity—famous person. Instead of doing this, Tamdrin got a job with Litang County’s culture, tourism and sports investment(投资) development company.
“Tamdrin has been working for our company to help make tourism in, Litang County more popular,” the company’s manager Gao Xiaoping told Red Star News. “He’ll get a monthly pay of 3,500 yuan. We’ll help him to decide which company he can work with so he won’t be cheated.”
“I’m glad to see that Tibetans are increasingly becoming internet celebrities,” Sangyeshung, a Tibetan doctor told China Daily. “They can introduce Tibetan culture, food and places of interests to the world.” he said.

【推荐3】Many people have their dreams at home and abroad. During China’s Ming Dynasty, there was a man named Wan Hu. His dream in life was “flying to the moon”. One day, he tied himself to a chair with 47 self-made “rockets” and held a big kite in his hands. He lit the “rockets” and disappeared into the sky. Unfortunately, he died when the “rockets” exploded(爆炸).
Hundreds of years later, in 1969, American astronaut(宇航员) Neil Armstrong stepped down from Apollo Ⅱ and walked on the moon. He was the first man to set foot on the moon. It was a great dream. It was also Wan Hu’s dream. To remember Wan, there is a crater(环形山) on the far side of the moon which is named after him.
There are many people like Wan in the world. They never stop making their dreams come true. American civil rights(民权) leader Martin Luther King once said, “I have a dream”. His dream helped American people of all races(种族) get the same rights. Though others laughed at him, Henry Ford had a dream of cars covering the roads instead of horses and carts. Seeing hungry people, Yuan Longping invented the hybrid rice for his dream of “feeding everybody in China”.
Dreams are important because they give us directions for our lives. With dreams, we set goals and make plans to change our present situations. So we can always change the world for the better. Let’s work harder for our dreams.

You must often get pocket money (零用钱) from your parents. How do you deal with it? Do you buy anything you like with it? For example, you may want to get a mobile phone, a video game, or some great books. However, sometimes, you just find out you don’t have enough money. Then it might be time for you to start saving some money. But how can you make it?

·Tip One: Spend your pocket money wisely.
A lot of children have pocket money. However, they’re not wise enough to spend their pocket money on the things they exactly need. Most children hardly spend their money on school things. Some of them even pay much money for a smartphone in order to play games on it.
·Tip Two: Find a way that works for you to save.
Mr. Woods: Get a piggy bank if you want to keep your money at home. It doesn’t have to be a real piggy bank. You can use an old shoebox. The point is just to have something that you can put your money into. |
Ms. Miller: If you don’t trust yourself enough to manage your own money, ask someone you can trust to hold your money for you. Just make sure you tell them not to give in if you ask them for some money. |
·Tip Three: Fight the thoughts to spend.
√ If you want something, you should make sure whether it is necessary for you first.
√ Wait a week. Then you may not want to buy it.
√ Make a shopping budget (预算) and stick to it strictly.
√ Put your energy in meaningful things, like reading books.
·Tip Four: ________
You can make money by selling the unwanted clothes, toys, and other things lying around your room. This is a good way of making money. At the same time, these things can be reused.
Anyway, saving money is not that easy. But it can help you understand making money is even harder. After all, “No pains, no gains.”
1. According to Paragraph 1, what may children want to buy?2. Mary spent 1,000 yuan of her pocket money in 2022. How much did she spend on junk food? How can she spend her money more wisely in 2023?
3. From Ms. Miller’s words, who can be the best person to hold money for you?
4. Why should you wait for a week before deciding to buy something?
5. What is the best subtitle (小标题) of Tip Four?
6. In your daily life, what do you usually do to save money? How should we spend money more meaningfully?
【推荐2】Eye contact(接触) means looking into another person’s eyes. This is a very important part of body language. It can be the key to communication. Eye contact can show feelings such as friendliness, interest and understanding.
In Western countries, using eye contact in conversations is very important. If you do not use eye contact, Westerners may think that you are lying.
However in many Asian countries, looking down when talking with an older person, like a teacher or a parent, is polite. These differences can cause problems. For example, an Asian person might look down while listening to a Western speaker. The Western speaker might think this person is not interested in what he or she is saying.
Not using eye contact can cause problems, but using too much is not polite either. In many countries, watching other people, especially strangers, for a long time is impolite. This may make them nervous.

【推荐3】Have you ever wondered what goes through your mind when you choose where to sit in a new classroom? Or in a waiting room full of strangers? Or on a bus? Researchers have found out some interesting facts.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, we prefer to sit closer to people like ourselves. Girls sit by girls and boys sit by boys. Adults sit together and young people choose another young person to sit near. But it goes further than this. We even choose to sit near someone who looks like us.
People with glasses are more likely to sit near other people with glasses. People with long hair sit closer to other people with long hair.
We seem to believe that people with similar habits or hobbies will share similar attitude and we are more likely to be accepted by people like ourselves or even. We think we may be safer with people who look like us. Sometimes that’s true but it’s a pity if we always stick to the same people, the same group. The danger always staying in our comfort zone is that we just recycle the same opinions, the same tastes and the same ideas. We lose the chance to learn something new, find out about interesting things, hear funny stories and discover differences.
When we always stick to the same people, how can we ever break down the barriers(障碍) which prevent us from getting to know people with different ideas? And how can we avoid the ignorance(无知), which too often leads to prejudice(偏见) and even fear? If instead you want to live in a society that opens to changes and new things and different opinions, be the cat among the pigeons.
Move out of your comfort zone. Go and sit next to someone different. And don’t just sit there in silence. Say hello. Ask a question. Start a conversation. That’s how we make friends. That’s how we learn about people. That’s how we open our minds to new ideas. That’s how we live an exciting life.
