Every year in March, while the two sessions (两会) are being held in Beijing. Government officials give reports to the public. They hold news conferences and answer questions from journalists from both home and abroad. During this time, a lot of people are paying attention to China. For this reason, interpreters (口译员) play a very important role and sometimes share the spotlight at these news conferences.
Zhang Lu is a professional interpreter. She usually interprets for top leaders, including Premier Li Keqiang and former premier Wen Jiabao. Zhang is known for her translations of Chinese literary quotes that are sometimes used by state leaders. From the ancient poem Li Sao to the shi, ci and qu writing of later dynasties, she can interpret them right on the spot.
How are interpreters like Zhang able to work so accurately and quickly?
The source of their ability is largely hard work. Most of them majored in English in college and went through a great deal of training. After they become interpreters, they never stop learning. Zhang watches and listens to foreign media such as BBC, VOA and CNN on TV or the radio every day as part of her training. She described it as an “unshakable routine” that she doesn’t break unless there is urgent work.
According to China Radio International, a month before the two sessions, the interpreters are told who they are going to interpret for. They then make full use of the month to prepare themselves. They try to predict what kinds of questions might be asked. They also look at literary quotes that the spokesperson might plan to use when they answer questions.
There is no “secret” to the success of China’s best interpreters. It’s all a matter of skill and hard work.

wants to become a director some day. You may not be as sure of your career (职业) as Mary. But you can start thinking about and planning for your future career.
The following article helps middle school students plan for careers.
Explore (探索) your interests
Many middle school students don’t yet know what they want to do. But in fact, students may change their minds several times, perhaps even after they enter society. And some of tomorrow’s
careers might not exist (存在) today. Focusing on just one job in middle school isn’t necessary. But
looking into the kinds of careers you might like can help you succeed.
①
Understanding what you enjoy and what you’re good at is the most important step in exploring careers. If you don’t know what you want to do, you should ask yourself what you like to learn about. If you really like science, what do you enjoy about it — the lab work or the research? It’s important to think about what you like to do, because work will finally be a big part of your life.
Discover possible careers
Once you’ve thought about the subjects and activities you like best, the next step is to look for careers that put those interests to use. If you love sports, for example, you might consider a career as a P.E. teacher or a soccer coach. If you like English, a career as an English teacher, a translator or a travelling guide might be a good choice.
②
After discovering possible jobs, you’ll want to learn more about them. Talking directly to workers on the phone, by email, or through online discussion can help you get information about what they do. Even meeting with them in person is helpful. First-hand information is necessary for you to find out if you’ll really like a career.

People collect all kinds of different things. Stamps or coins are the common ones to be collected. People also collect the less common ones, such as beer bottles or bus tickets. Some collectors spend hours looking through junk shops and build up a collection for a few pence per object, while other collectors might spend thousands of pounds on fine china or rare (稀有的)paintings.
Some people collect for money, but most people do it for fun. Collecting is basically illogical. If you simply want to listen to the American singer and actor Elvis Presley's first record, you can get a copy at most record shops. A collector, however, will want to own an original 1955 disc, and will be willing to pay for it.
What makes a collection valuable? Rarity and condition are the most important things. A coin or stamp which is worth hundreds in perfect condition might be worth only pence in average or poor condition.
What should you collect? Most collectors begin collecting things which interest them, and as the collection grows, knowledge of the subject grows. If you want your collection to grow in value, it is probably best to avoid things which are sold especially for collectors. Nearly everybody who buys a set of new coins or stamps will keep them in perfect condition, so that the new coins or stamps will never become rare. The most valuable collections are often things which were widely available, but which were usually thrown away after use, such as Coca-Cola bottles or toy cars. An interesting collection can be started very cheaply.
One collector has started a collection of 1950s and 1960s ball-point pens. At the moment it's worth nothing, but she predicts it will one day be valuable. Ball-points were widely available, and were made in a large range of colours and styles. They were often designed to be thrown away when they were empty. Many people aren't willing to throw away used pens, and put them in a drawer or box, perhaps hoping they might work again one day. So it is possible to find unusual things, made many years ago. That even costs nothing.

But my teacher advised me to write down my feeling after reading something. So I had a try. At first, there were only a few sentences in my notebook. I read them to my parents, teachers and my classmates. To my surprise, they all liked my sentences. They gave me some good advice and encouraged me to write more. I began to write articles soon.
Writing helps me build my confidence. It makes my life colourful. Now I am a high school student and I still love writing. I hope to be a great writer in the future.

A road is a bridge between two places. The Silk Road has been a bridge between East and West for more than 2,000 years.
But did you know that the Silk Road is not a single route? It is actually a series of trade and cultural transmission(传送)routes. It started to take shape during the Western Han Dynasty. The trade route started from the city of Xi'an in Shaanxi Province and ended in eastern Europe, near today’s Turkey and the Mediterranean Sea(地中海). The Silk Road was about 6,500 kilometers long. It went across one-fourth of the planet.
The Silk Road got its name because Chinese silk used to be carried along this road. In addition to silk, jade (玉), tea and iron also went west to Rome. From the West came glass, gems(宝石), and foods like carrots and sesame.
The Silk Road was very important to both China and the rest of the world. In addition trade, knowledge about science, arts and literature, as well as craftsmanship and technology, was shared across the Silk Road. In this way, languages and cultures developed and influenced each other.
Today, various historical sites along the Silk Road are popular travel destinations, such as the Terracotta Warriors(兵马俑)in Xi’an and Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟) in Dunhuang, Gansu .A new train line, the New Orient Express, is running from Beijing across the Silk Road.

Life in the 22nd century will be different from that in the 21st century, because many changes will take place. The population is growing fast. There will be more and more people in the world and most of them will live longer than before. Computers will be much smaller and more useful, and there will be at least one in every home. If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands. Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. It’s only good for keeping sheep (绵羊). The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.
They’re not for everyone. Even summer days are cool and often windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view (风景) looks like pictures of the moon.
But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the ways to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean. The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and winter the hills are more purple.
On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.
If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs (酒吧) or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing.
