There are long rivers, and there are famous rivers. The Nile (尼罗河) is the world's longest and most famous river. It runs 6,650 kilometers. Crocodiles and hippos (河马) live in its waters. Pyramids built by ancient Egyptians rise along its banks.

The main branch of the Nile, the White Nile, starts just above Lake Victoria, the world's second largest fresh-water lake, in east central Africa. Then it flows to the north. At Sudan's capital, another great river called the Blue Nile joins the White Nile. Together, they form one very powerful river. Then it goes through Egypt's famous Nile Valley before reaching the Mediterranean Sea.

Ancient Egypt, the first great African civilization (文明), started along the banks of the Nile more than 5, 000 years ago. Ancient Egypt ruled the Nile Valley for thousands of years. Great pyramids and temples were built on the banks and we can still visit them today.

Without the rich farmland along the banks of the Nile, there might be no ancient Egypt civilization. Every year, the Nile flooded its banks. The flood waters covered the banks with a rich soil. The Nile's banks were easy to farm and produce crops.

The Nile also made a perfect highway for boats. The river runs north, but the wind on the river blows south. To go south, boaters put up sails to catch the wind. To go north, they took the sails down. Ancient people traded along the river for hundreds of miles.

Imagine mountains wrapped in silver water, shining in the spring sun. Summer sees the mountains turn bright green with growing rice. During autumn, these same mountains are gold, and in winter they are covered with white frost(霜). These are the colors of the Longji Rice Terraces(龙脊梯田).

These terraces were built by the local Zhuang and Yao people. Guangxi is home to them. Starting in the Yuan Dynasty, work on the terraces took hundreds of years until it was completed in the early Qing Dynasty.

So why did these people go to so much trouble to turn the mountains into terraces?

Firstly, there are few large and flat areas in the region they built terraces to have more areas to grow rice.

Secondly, although the region has plenty of rain, the mountains are1.steepand the soil is 2.shallow. The flat terraces catch the rainwater and prevent the soil from being washed away.

But perhaps what is most important is the way in which people have worked in harmony with(和谐相处) nature to make these terraces and grow rice. The terraces are cleverly designed with hundreds of waterways that connect with each other. The rainwater moves down the mountains and into the terraces along the waterways. 3.These terraces also provide a perfect environment for birds and fish, they feed on insects that can harm the rice crops.

Although modern technology could help produce more crops, these terraces still mean a lot to the local people for whom traditions hold much value. Today, the Longji Rice Terraces attract thousands of visitors every year.' They visit this great wonder created by people and nature working together.

As the world’s third-longest river, it covers one-fifth of China’s land area. The Yangtze River Economic Zone (长江经济带) covers 11 provinces and cities, making up about two-fifths of China’s total population and GDP.

On December 26, China passed the Yangtze River Protection Law, which took effect on March 1, 2021. It is the first law to protect a waterway in China.

The “mother river” is in great need of protection because something is wrong with it. For example, because of overfishing and water pollution, the river’s Chinese paddlefish (白鲟) has died out after surviving for 150 million years. There’re also desertified (荒漠化的) land and soil pollution near the upstream part of the river in Qinghai province.

The Yangtze River Protection Law includes bans (禁止) on activity that could damage the river. It also includes heavier punishments for those who don’t follow the law.

According to the law, fishing will be banned in all of the Yangtze’s natural waterways. Those who are caught fishing will be fined 50,000 to 500,000 yuan.

Sand mining (采沙) will be strictly limited in the river valley. Many companies are mining sand along the river, as sand is a rare resource. However, the water levels on this river have dropped because of this, which has made the river’s water quality become worse.

Companies operating along the river will need to focus on green development. Companies that produce dangerous chemicals will be moved to other places, the law says.

The River Nile is the longest river in the world. It is about 6, 670 kilometres in length. It covers about 3.4 million square kilometres, which is about 10% of the area of Africa.

The main source (源头) of the River Nile is the White Nile in the small country called Burundi. In Sudan, the White Nile is joined by the Blue Nile, which lows from Ethiopia. From this point on, the river is called the River Nile. In Egypt, the River Nile runs across its flat land to Cairo, where it forms a very large delta (三角洲). It then goes into the Mediterranean Sea.

In the past, summer rains and melting snows made the River Nile flood its banks every autumn. These floods left behind water and rich mud, letting farmers grow crops along the riverbanks, in the delta, and to the south of it. By building a number of dams, the Egyptians control the low of water in the River Nile. The biggest dam is the Aswan High Dam. It holds floodwater back in Lake Nasser. The people who live along the River Nile no longer have to deal with the yearly flooding of their homes and land. Small canals (运河) have been built to carry water to the fields and villages. Water rushing over the dam wall is also used to produce electricity.

When Lake Nasser gets hot, lots of its water changes into water vapour. The fertile (肥沃的) mud that would spread over the fields while flooding now goes down to the bottom of the lake. Without this mud, farmers in the River Nile valley now have to use chemical fertilisers (化肥) on their crops. Moreover, the soils in the delta are becoming saltier because there is less freshwater flowing down the River Nile and more saltwater from the Mediterranean Sea can flow into the delta.

Most towns and cities in Egypt and Sudan are near the River Nile. For locals, the river is important for moving goods and people, especially in the flood season when road transport is difficult. Ships can travel along most of the River Nile in Egypt and Sudan, except when the water is very low.
