What will you get if you see a baby with a fish? It’s not the start of a joke, but one of a series of pictures drawn by Shanghai illustrator(插画师)Frankie Huang. Chinese is already one of the most pictorial(形象化的)languages in the world, but she’s taking it to the next level-by literally(字面上)turning words into pictures. Her series Putong Animals re-imagine animals according to what they’re called in Putonghua, the official language of China.
In Chinese, a zebra, for example, is literally a “patterned horse”. Frankie said she came up with the idea for the series after seeing people on the Internet discussing how some animals had funny names when being translated literally. “I want to create something that is not just pretty but also in-teresting,” she said.
Frankie’s thoughts have a close relationship with her background. Frankie was born in Beijing, but grew up in the US. “I’m both an outsider and insider to the Chinese language. I think sometimes you need to be an outsider in order to really enjoy something,” said Frankie.
It takes Frankie around three hours to produce one illustration. She has for now completed her series on Putong Animals, but she is looking into turning the animals into characters of their own.
Frankie hopes her works will help people recognize the “humour of Chinese culture”. “I want to reach more people to help them become interested in Chinese language and culture,” she said.

In 1582, Richard Mulcaster, the headmaster of a British school, wrote that English would not go beyond their island. However, it didn’t stay that way. Today, English is spoken all over the world. It is a colorful and diverse (多样的) language that long has picked up words from many other languages. Here are five words that show the English language’s interesting history.
English
English began in the language spoken by the early Germanic people in the 5th century AD. It is from them that the word “English” comes.
Beef
Although roast beef is seen as a traditional English dish, the word “beef” was introduced from the French word boeuf during the Middle Ages. It was one of a group of words, including pork and mutton, that were taken from the speech of the French who moved to Britain following the Norman Conquest (诺曼底登陆) of 1066. However, the farmers who kept these animals continued to call them by their old English names: cow, pig and sheep. This difference passed on till this day.
Dictionary
Dictionary is a borrowing from Latin dictornarius liber, “book of words”. It first appeared in English in the 6th century, along with a huge number of other words from Latin and Greek. The first English dictionary was written by Robert Cawdrey in 1604. Cawdrey focused only on the difficult words whose meanings would have caused problems for those not educated in Latin and Greek.
Tea
The word tea comes from the Chinese word cha. A love of tea is so ingrained (根深蒂固的) in British life that the expression “cup of tea” has come to stand for anything viewed positively. The saying “It’s not my cup of tea.” means “I don’t like it.”
Emoji
Emoji originated (起源于) in Japan in the 1990s.The word “emoji” is formed by combining the Japanese “e”—picture and “moji”—letter. Emojis are just another example of the development and diversity of English.

【推荐1】Usually people sleep between seven and eight hours a day, but a lot of people have problems getting to sleep every night.
Many people do not know why they have insomnia (失眠症). Most people know that tea and coffee often make it difficult to go to sleep because there is caffeine (咖啡因) in them. But there is caffeine in some medicines, such as cold pills (药片), too. Sleeping pills can help you go to sleep, but when you get up the next morning you feel tired.
You will sleep more easily if you use your bedroom only for sleep. You can’t use your bedroom as an office, a TV room or an exercise room. You should also have a regular sleeping habit. So try to go to bed at the same time every night and get up at the same time every morning. Don’t eat anything just before you go to bed but try a glass of warm milk. And if all this doesn’t work, count sheep!

What do you need?

What do you want?
Wants are things that would be nice to have, but that you can live without. 2 As a child you might want a new bike, but when you get a bit older you’re more likely to want a phone, new clothes, or even a car.
Mindful spending
It’s important to try “mindful spending”. This means thinking carefully about whether you really need something right now, or whether it would be better to wait or save the money instead.
