What would people like to eat on their birthday? In fact, the birthday foods are different in different countries.

In many countries, people have birthday cakes with candles. The number of candles is the person’s age. The birthday person must make a wish and blow out the candles. If he or she blow out all the candles in one go, the wish will come true. In the UK, people sometimes put a candy in a birthday cake. The child with the candy is lucky.

In China, it’s getting popular to have cake on your birthday. But many people will eat very long noodles for their birthday. They never cut up the noodles because the noodles are a symbol of long life. Chinese people also eat eggs on their birthday. They are a symbol of life and good luck.

All of these birthday foods may be different, but the ideas are the same.

The Japanese eat rice, too. They also eat a lot of fish because they live near the sea. It’s easy for them to get fish. Sometimes, they eat raw (生的) fish.

In western countries such as Britain, Australia and the U.S., the most important food is bread and potatoes. People there can cook potatoes in many different ways. In Britain, the most popular food is fish and chips. Sometimes people cook this kind of food at home, but they usually buy it from the shop. They eat it at home, in the workplace, in the park or even on the road. People call it “take-away” food.

Do you like to eat out? Many people like to eat out in a western restaurant（西餐厅）. We should remember the rules in a western restaurant.

Western restaurants usually give you nice napkin（餐巾）to use during the meat. When you sit down, put this napkin on your legs, then order the food. It often has a lot of dishes. Many people order an appetizer（开胃菜）for the first dish. An appetizer is a small dish of food. After the appetizer, you may get soup and then salad（沙拉）.

After the salad comes the main（主要的）food. A main food will have some kinds of meat or fish with noodles, rice or potatoes and vegetables. The last food is usually dessert（甜点）and drink, like coffee or tea.

For some people, eating out in a western restaurant is really expensive. Some may think the food is very delicious, but some don’t think so.

The Olympic Games have a long history. They began in Greece and lasted for over a thousand years, until 394 AD. The ancient Olympic Games were very different from the Olympics we have today. In ancient time, only the Greeks took part in the Olympics, and women were not allowed to join or watch them.

The first modern Olympics were held in Athens, Greece in 1896. Every four years athletes from all over the world take part in different sports at the Olympics. Many of these athletes were women. A large group of athletes at the Olympics takes part in track and field events. Track events, such as running, test a person’s speed. Field events, such as the high jump, long jump and shot put, test how high or far someone can jump or throw an object.

One of the most exciting events in the Olympics is the 100-metre race. More than one hundred years ago, the world record for the men’s 100-metre race was 10. 6 seconds. However, athletes have run faster and faster. In 1960, the record was 10 seconds. Then at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, the record was set at 9.69 seconds. The Olympic motto “Faster, Higher, Stronger”, what the Olympics are all about.

The World Cup is an international football competition that takes every four years. The first World Cup event was held in 1930 and it has only been cancelled (取消) twice in the history of the competition—in 1942 and 1946, because of the Second World War. It can take place anywhere in the world.

This year, in 2022, the host country was the State of Qatar (卡塔尔). It is the first time that a country in the Middle East is hosting the World Cup and only the second time that a country in Asia is hosting the competition.

There are 32 national teams participating. These teams were determined through qualifying matches (资格赛). There will be a total of 64 matches played over the 28-day World Cup. These matches take place in eight stadiums (体育场) across the State of Qatar. There was a match at Al Bayt Stadium on 20th November between Qatar and Ecuador after the opening ceremony (开幕式).

Every World Cup has an emblem (徽章). The 2022 Men’s World Cup emblem is an unbroken curved (曲线型的) loop that is similar to the number eight. Not only does it means the sand dunes (沙丘) in the desert and the eight stadiums that host the matches, but the connection between different cultures and countries during the World Cup. Another important item which is always present at The World Cup is the mascot (吉祥物). The mascot of the 2022 World Cup is called La’eeb in Arabic. La’eeb is a traditional Qatari headdress called a ghotra and iqal. It encourages people to believe themselves, and it also means that people will feel much happier when playing football.

Yuan Li: If we don’t take good care of the earth now. Our children and grandchildren will be born into a world with much pollution. There will be fewer trees and more buildings, because there will be more people.

Wang Tao: I think the weather in the future will be much hotter. People will be able to live in the sea, away from the crowded and noisy cities on land.

Li Yue: I think the life in the future will be better. Most people in the world will use “green cars” by 2055, so there will be less pollution and people will live to be 200 years. As for space travel, I would say, we will visit Mars (火星) in about fifty years.
