1 . For most British (英国的) people, Sunday is a day to eat a traditional dinner: a Sunday roast (周日烤肉大餐).
* History: Britons have kept this tradition for a long time. In the old days, people went to church (教堂) on Sundays. They were hungry after they got back. So families always ate a big meal.
* Food: Sunday dinner has roast chicken or beef, potatoes, vegetables and Yorkshire pudding (约克郡布丁). This is a pudding made from eggs, milk and flour (面粉).
* Places to go: What if you don’t have time to make the traditional dinner? Don’t worry. In Britain, there is a type of restaurant called a carvery. There you can eat a Sunday roast.
* Value: This meal is also great for families. Parents and children can sit down and tell each other about their week at work or school.

Change your eating habits
You are what you eat. Kids like snacks. Did you list any healthy snacks? One study of eating habits showed that soft drinks are the first in the snack list. Next, kids choose salty snacks, like chips. What’s more, the list is full of junk food from No. 3 to No. 11. Finally, No. 12, kids picked a healthy snack—fruit. So, think about your snack choice again.
Get outside to exercise
Jim, a player on his school football team, had a weight problem not long time ago. He could never get anyone to play with him. So his father and he started playing football for a few minutes every night. Ten minutes turned into an hour or more. In just a few years, the heavy kid became athletic, fit and healthy.
More TV means more fat
Nearly every American kid watches TV for 2 hours and 56 minutes every day—that adds up to 44 days a year of sitting. More TV (or more Internet surfing, or more computer games) means more fat.

In Britain, you mustn’t lift your bowl to your mouth when you are having some liquid food. But it’s different in China and in Japan, you even needn’t worry about making noises when you have it. It shows that you are enjoying it. But it is regarded as bad manners in Britain. If you are visitor in Mongolia, what manners do they wish you to have? They wish you to give a loud “burp” (打嗝) after you finish eating. Burping shows that you like the food.
In Britain, you should try not to put your hands on the table when you’re having a meal. In Mexico, however, guests are expected to keep their hands on the table during a meal. But in Arab countries you must be very careful with your hands. You mustn’t eat with your left hand. Arab consider it very bad manners eating with left hands. So, what should you do if you are on a visit in another country? Well, just do in Rome as the Romans do. You can ask the native people to help you or just watch carefully and follow them.

5 . My good friend Carlos invited me to his birthday party. He moved to Canada from Mexico when he was a baby, but his parents tried to follow some of the Mexican traditions. At his party I saw my first pinata (彩盒). It looked like an animal and full of candies. People put it on the ceiling (天花板). Carlos hit (打) the pinata until it broke. All the candies fell on the floor, and we had a great time eating candies. Everyone shared. It was fun!
Carlos’s birthday party got me thinking about how kids in other places celebrate birthdays. Did you know that in Vietnam, everyone’s birthday is on the same day? Kids do not celebrate on birthdays. Instead, on New Year’s Day, all the kids celebrate their birthdays. Parents give kids red envelopes (信封) with lucky money in them. What a great way to celebrate birthdays! In South Africa, kids do not celebrate every birthday. However, on their 21st birthday, their parents make a key. It can be made of paper or wood. Parents give their child this key. It is a sign from the parents that the child can now unlock the door to their future life.
In Japan, children get a new set of clothes on their birthdays. While in Italy adults (成年人) pull children’s ears—one pull for each year. In Denmark, a flag flies outside the window of a house where a child is having a birthday. When the child is asleep, adults put presents all around the child’s bed.

6 . Going to a friend’s house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he or she lives. So remember to be polite (有礼貌的).
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3:00”, that means you can arrive a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time.
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you to share, or maybe a CD that you can enjoy together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his or her house.
When you visit your friend’s house, you may also meet his or her parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. and Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect (尊重) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to call them Madam or Sir.
It is a cool thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again.

7 . Anger is a kind of feeling. Many things can make you angry. When your teacher gives you too much homework, when your team loses an important game, and when a friend borrows your favorite thing and then breaks it, you may get really angry.
Usually, your body will tell you when you are angry. For example, you breathe faster, your face turns red, and you may want to break something or hit someone, but sometimes, you hide your anger. For example, you may hide it in your heart. The problem is that if you do this, you may get a headache or your stomach may hurt.
In fact, it’s not good to hide your anger, and it’s normal for you to get angry sometimes. But anger must be let out in the right way, without hurting yourself or others.
When you get angry, you can talk about it with other people. It’s helpful to talk about your anger with an adult, such as your parents, a teacher, etc. When you talk about anger, those bad feelings can start to go away. Here are some other things you can do when you start to feel angry: talk to a good friend; count from 1 to 100; give someone a hug; go for a bike ride; think about good things, etc.

8 . Artificial intelligence (AI) seems to be a hot topic these days. In which ways has it already changed or will change our lives? A Forbes (福布斯) article has explained AI trends (趋势) for next year.
Finding medicine By dealing with a lot of data, AI can find new medicine for different illnesses. In 2020, AI helped with the development of COVID-19 vaccines (疫苗). It cut time lines from 10 years to 10 months. Last year, AI also helped find a protein’s structure (蛋白质的结构). This means scientists can create protein-based medicine. |
Creating virtual (虚拟的) workplaces In the past year, many people worked from home because of COVID-19. In the near future, VR, 5G and AI technologies will improve the trend of virtual workplaces. Companies can replicate themselves in a digital (数字的) world. Workers will play a virtual role in this company, as they work at home. They will not just work online, but also communicate virtually. |
Making the world smarter With high-speed chips, 5G and AI, smart objects can become faster and smarter. For example, smart customer controls in a clothes store will know what you like and suggest clothes for you. They will let you “try on” the clothes in a smart mirror and show what colors and sizes they have. |

9 . What are the basic ingredients (要素) of good manners? A strong sense of fairness is one of them.
A friend once told me an experience that he had. When he was driving along a one-lane (单行小路), unpaved (未铺路的) mountain road, the car ahead of his produced clouds of choking dust (呛人的尘土), and it was a long way to the nearest paved main road. Suddenly, the car ahead stopped at a wider place on the road. My friend thought there must be something wrong with the car ahead. He stopped and asked if anything was wrong. “No,” said the other driver. “But you’ve endured my dust so far. I’ll endure yours the rest of the way.”
Another ingredient is empathy (同情心). It makes a person see into the mind or heart of someone else. Recently I happened to read such a story in a book.
A man was having dinner alone, and he was trying to open a bottle. But he failed. Then he asked a waiter for help. The waiter took the bottle, turned his back and opened it without difficulty. Then the waiter closed it again and turned back. He pretended (假装) to make a great effort to open the bottle without success. Finally, he took it into the kitchen and returned very soon. He told the man that he managed to open it, but only with a tool. Yet another ingredient is the ability to treat people alike (一视同仁). No matter who he is and what he does, everyone is worth respecting.
