1 . On August 5, 2021, Quan Hongchan, a 14-year-old Chinese player, made history at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. In the women’s 10-meter platform final (10米跳台决赛), she got full marks in three of her five dives (跳水) and won first place.
As the youngest player of the Chinese team in Tokyo, Quan did better than her 16-year-old teammate Chen Yuxi who won second place, and Melissa Wu of Australia won third place. In the final, Quan hardly made ripples (涟漪) in the water and got 466.2 points, the best result ever in the game.
Quan has a cute face and looks like a small boy. “I was a little nervous at first,” she said to the reporters after the game. “I don’t think there are differences between joining in the Olympics and joining in the national championships (全国锦标赛). I just tried to show my dives as my teacher told me to.”
Quan was born and grew up in a village of Zhanjiang, Guangdong. In 2017, her mother was injured (受伤的). “My mom is sick now. I really want to make more money to help her,” Quan said.
Almost in one night, Quan became a star around the world. Her three excellent dives surprised everyone. Li Xiaopeng, who was an Olympic gymnastics champion, wrote on Weibo “I might make bigger ripples by putting a coin (硬币) in a cup of water than her dives.”

2 . As an ordinary person, what can we do when our nation is in danger? Gong Dafei has set us a good example. 30-year-old Gong comes from Datong, North China’s Shanxi Province. Not long ago, he was building Huoshenshan Hospital in Wuhan, Central China’s Hubei Province. After finishing his work there, he decided to give away all his salary(薪水) to the hospital.
It was not easy to build Huoshenshan Hospital. For thousands of workers like Gong Dafei, they had much trouble working there. However, all the workers never gave up. Instead, they kept working hard day and night. It took them only ten days to finish building a large hospital for saving more patients with COVID-19.
When Gong Dafei heard the news about building the hospital, he made a decision to join in without thinking twice. Although most of his family members disagreed because he might be in danger, Gong still left his home and arrived in Wuhan on January 30, 2020.
“Since the epidemic(传染病) broke out and spread, I’ve kept paying attention to the conditions of the disease,” he said. “We all know the hospital is of great importance to Wuhan and even the whole country, so I decide to give away all my salary from my work to the hospital.”
