1 . China's national anthem, March of the Volunteers, is a song that we learn at the beginning of primary school and sing at every flag-raising ceremony. And now, there's even a law to protect it. Last September, the government passed the National Anthem Law, which became effective (生效) from Oct. 1, 2017. It states how we should sing or play the song, requiring all of us to behave towards it politely.
Primary and middle schools must teach the anthem to their students and make them understand the song's spirit and history. Moreover, the law requires us to be serious when we are singing the song. We can’t joke about it or change the song's words or music. If someone breaks the law, he or she can be detained for up to 15 days, or face further punishment in more serious situations. The national anthem is different from other songs—it is the symbol of our country.
Many foreign countries also have laws for their national anthems. For example, American school children should put their right hand over their heart while singing their country's anthem at school. In Russia, the national anthem must be played on television and radio before the start and end of broadcasting. And in the Philippines, people are required to sing the national anthem with feelings when it's played in public.

4 . “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”—Nelson Mandela, the late president of South Africa.
Mandela understood that our mother language can make us closer. For people who speak an ancient language as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors(祖先). And it is also how they imagine the future.
But there are fewer and fewer existing languages over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South America are also places where many languages are dying. Why are humans speaking fewer languages than we once did. The answer has to do with globalization(全球化). Nowadays, it’s more useful to speak certain languages-English is one example-rather than others. This has killed some languages, usually the ones spoken by fewer or less influential people.
But some people aren’t prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. They want to find and protect more endangered languages. And the United Nations has set Feb. 21 as International Mother Language Day. The organization wants people to pay more attention to dying languages and make them more animate.
This work is of great importance. Just as the US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, “Language is a kind of symbol of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going.”

5 . Dreams are like stars. You may never catch them, but if you follow them, they will lead you to success. Yan Ning is such a dream follower.
Yan is a rising star in the science world. When Yan Ning was only a little girl, she dreamed of being a great scientist. After years of hard work in 1996, she went to Tsinghua University to study biology. After graduating from Tsinghua in 2000, she went to Princeton University and finished her study there in 2007. Then she returned to Tsinghua and set up her own lab. At the age of 30, she became the youngest professor(教授)at Tsinghua.
Now, Yan, 42, has become a leading biology researcher at Princeton. On April 30, she was included among the 100 new members and 25 foreign associates(院士)into the US National Academy of Science.
However, it was a long and difficult road for her to make such achievements. She said that in order to realize her dream, she experienced a lot of failures and pains. But she never gave up her dream. Instead, she followed her dream and fought for it.
She usually works at least 14 hours a day. Sometimes she even forgets to eat and rest and works until late night. She never gets tired because she thinks doing research is the most “comfortable” job for her.
In a TV interview, Yan encouraged young people to work hard for their dreams. “All our dreams can come true if we have the courage to follow them.”

Wendy King Friday, June 21
Today I went to the beach. The sea looked so beautiful. When I was a child, we always went to the beach for a week in the summer. I remembered playing games with my sister and crying(哭)when I couldn't have any ice cream. Oh, I remembered finding a huge jellyfish(水母)on the beach. We ran away quickly because we were afraid of it! What things from your childhood(童年)do you remember?
