Never stop studying
Tom was a student in my class. He was a clever boy, with interesting ideas, but he was not a patient student. He preferred to have fun and then study madly (疯狂地) through the night before a test.
One morning, near the beginning of the term, I heard him talking to his friend. “Six more years!” he was saying. “Then we will never have to learn anything again!”
“Tom,” I said to him, “you need to think of yourself like at an athlete. Athletes don’t get good results overnight. They spend years and years training, working hard every day and not just before an event (体育赛事). And even when the event is over, they don’t stop. They go on working harder and harder, and thinking about the next event, and the one after that. You can always learn more, and you can always be better. Don’t just learn what you have to know. Learn new things. And above all, remember that learning is a privilege (幸运). It is good for us. It opens our minds, and it opens the world up to us. The more we learn, the more we want to learn.”
I wasn’t sure that Tom was listening, but he surprised me. A few months later, he said to me,
“You’re right about learning, Miss Headington. After you spoke to me about it, I started studying extra things for just an hour a day, every day. Learning about history, reading about the lives of amazing people—things like that. And you know what? Sometimes I can’t stop. I started reading about Captain Scott at eight o’clock last night, and I didn’t put the book down until midnight.”
I know he’s got a bright future, Tom. He’s discovered a love of learning, and that will keep him moving forward for the rest of his life.
