MBTI is a personality test. Many people in China are crazy about it now. Are you an “I” (I=introverted 内向的) person     1     an “E” ( E = extroverted 外向的) person? The topic is widely discussed online.

I am an “I” person. I’m a shy girl     2     doesn’t like being around people. I am quiet when I am in groups. I enjoy being alone. I am good at writing novels, maybe I could be a writer in the future.

I am an “E” person. I am pretty outgoing. My friends call me a social butterfly. I like to go out and meet new people all the time. I enjoy being     3     center of attention. I do well     4     sports and my dream is to be a basketball player.

When you take a personality test, you may think, Oh, that’s me. That’s because the descriptions are common. They can be used     5     describe many people. So, don’t take it too seriously. You can be both an “I” person or an “E” person. Don’t label (标签) yourself!

4 . Are you an “E person” or an “I person”? These two personality labels (个性标签) are widely discussed online. They are part of a popular personality test called the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator, or MBTI. There are 16 results in total of the test.

Usually, an “I person” is quiet, while an “E person” is outgoing. But an “I person” can still act outgoing sometimes. For example, when an “I person” is with a group of “I” friends, they might want to change and become more social like an “E person”.

According to psychologists (心理家), this idea of personality changing is called “masking” (伪装). That is hiding your true personality in certain situations. “Humans want to be welcomed, and they might change their personalities within a short time,” wrote the Master Class website.

Using the MBTI result to describe someone’s personality seems fun. However, I realized I was deeply influenced by the result once. My sister was excitedly making a travel plan. But I remembered from an article that a “P person” doesn’t like to make or follow plans. So I said to her, “You don’t seem like a ‘P person’.” “Why?” She asked back. “Because the personality test tells a ‘P person’ doesn’t like to make plans!” At that moment, I realized I’d taken the result too seriously.

The MBTI personality test may show something you don’t know about yourself. And it can even be a fun way to start a conversation when meeting new friends. And that’s all for fun. Knowing someone’s MBTI result doesn’t mean you really know this person. And those results of yours don’t define (定义) who you are.

Finding out who you really are

When talking about personalities, people often say they are extrovert (外向型) or introvert. Introverts, according to surveys, like staying in their own world, w    1     extroverts get happiness through social contact. With the popularity of MBTI tests on the Internet, i    2     in the personalities is rising.

But some people are not sure about the differences between being introverts and having a social phobia (社恐). Some even make an excuse of having a social phobia to a    3     any social events. Sometimes, it’s understandable, because they hope to keep a safe social distance. However, there is a difference. People with the social phobia feel u    4     with their body and mind when getting along with others.

As a teacher in high school, I need to check on her students’ studies often. Some who use the social phobia as an excuse don’t answer and leave w    5     a word. These students may feel “safe”. But they may also push away or hurt people who really care about them. Some of them are truly shy but others are just considering t    6     as “too cool” to reply.

According to Harvard Health, this idea of changing personalities is called “masking”. That is h    7     your true personality in some situations. Thinking on this, I may be the kind of person that people are discussing. In fact, I’m mostly enjoy being a    8     and quiet. But sometimes, I just wish to show people that I’m easy to get along with and make the e    9     more interesting and exciting.
