6 . The world is full of amazing treasures. Many treasures have been discovered and kept for people to enjoy and used to learn about the past, but some have been lost forever. Yet there are some treasures that have no monetary(货币的)value at all. These could be photographs or videos precious(珍贵的)to a family, a collection of something valued by its owner, or a little gift passed down from generation to generation.

Whatever the treasure is, it needs to be cared for. It needs to be kept safe because a treasure is something of value, something that can touch our lives.

Discovering treasures takes a lot of time and work. But some treasures were found by chance. The terracotta warriors were among them.

How did people find them? One day in 1974, workers were digging a well in China when they hit what they at first thought was a rock. When they looked closer, they found it was a warrior’s head made out of a kind of clay called terracotta. As the workers dug farther, they found the statue of a whole warrior in full uniform. They kept digging and found more life size statues, all in uniform. Archaeologists(考古学家)heard about the discovery, and they began to dig, too. They discovered long rows of soldiers. Some of the soldiers were on foot and others were with horses and chariots(战车). To their surprise, no two looked the same.

The workers and archaeologists had discovered the amazing treasure. These terracotta warriors had been buried since more than 2,000 years ago. Today they provide a look into an important part of China’s history.

7 . During the National Day Holiday in October, a statue(雕像)in Longmen Grottoes made headlines for its new look. It now has a smooth patina(氧化层)because too many tourists have touched it and caused its surface to change color.

What happened to this statue is not uncommon. Tourism is the main reason causing damage(损坏). To better protect the statues, some scientists are asked to do research and decide how many daily visitors they can safely receive. The number of visitors should be controlled based on this research. Tourists are also being encouraged to book tickets online and avoid visiting during peak hours.

It’s true that too many tourists can lead to problems like littering and damaged relics(遗迹破坏). Poorly-behaved tourists might even draw on the walls or try to steal relics. But statues are at even greater risk for several reasons.

Over many centuries, the ancient rocks that make up these statues have been slowly corroded due to the acidic(酸性的)content of air water and so on. But when they are open to the public, the corrosion(侵蚀)process speeds up.

According to a study by the China University of Geosciences, the carbon dioxide that visitors breathe out has made the air more acidic at the Longmen Grottoes. Even their body heat can increase the caves’ temperature. All of these things can harm the relics inside.

Starting in 2014, all visitors are organized into guided groups. Up to 18,000 visitors are allowed in the site every day.

A TV programme has become popular in China recently. It has made people all over China become interested in writing Chinese characters (汉字).

The increasing use of computers and smartphones has left most young people hardly able to write by hand. Many of them are even unable to remember the 1,000 characters used in daily life without the help of electronic equipment.

CCTV started Dictation Assembly of Chinese Characters to improve the population's handwriting skills. Contestants (参与者) on the show were school pupils, but it was found that 70% of the adults in the audience were unable to remember how to write the word “chanchu”.

Because computers allow people to type characters simply by entering pinyin, they don’t need to remember how to write them. “The keyboard age has had a big influence on the handwriting of Chinese characters,” Guan Zhengwen, who designed and directed the show, said. He added that he hoped to encourage people to keep it alive as an art form.

Hao Mingjian, an editor of a magazine, putting his heart into Chinese characters, said: “Learning Chinese characters goes on throughout your life. If you stop using them for a long time, it is very likely that you will forget them.”
