There is no doubt that speed-reading is an important skill in the fast-paced information age. We need to quickly get key words to find what really need. Speed-reading is quite helpful in some situations, for example, during an exam. But it seemed we read more, we enjoy less pleasure of reading than before. Besides, some of us even have lost the ability of enjoying reading, enjoying the beauty of the language and understanding the meaning of it.
So today, the idea of “slow-reading” has become popular. People are encouraged to shut off their computers and mobile phones for at least half an hour each day. Therefore, they can enjoy the pleasure of reading a good book slowly! Of course, it’s different. When I am reading a fiction slowly, I am relaxed. I can imagine I am with the character and see the world through their eyes. This helps me learn about the world around me. Since the age of ten, reading also provide me with a kind of education.

When people graduate from high school or college, they usually think their education is over. But in fact, it’s important to continue learning after finishing school. That is to be a lifelong (终生的) learner.
Being a lifelong learner can be fun. It can give you something interesting to talk about.
And it’s good for your brain. Just as exercise makes your body stronger, your mind becomes sharper (更灵敏的) when you use it.
It can also help you with your work or job. Knowledge in other areas can help you develop creative ideas in your present job. Also, becoming an expert in an area outside of your present job allows you to take a job in another field if you want to.
Then let’s talk about how to become a lifelong learner? First, you need to make up your mind to keep on learning new things even when it isn’t easy. It may help if you find friends who will encourage your learning.
Then it’s a good idea to find time to learn during your day. Carry a book with you, and read it when you have to wait. Audio books (有声读物) are also helpful. You can listen to them while traveling or doing housework.
Finding ways to use what you’ve learned can also help you remember things. For example, if you want to learn how to fix appliances (家用电器), try fixing some at home. If you are learning a foreign language, find someone who speaks that language to talk with. If you are learning facts about science, explain what you are learning to someone else. Then you can help that person be a lifelong learner, too!Title: | |

2).What can you learn from this passage?
“Don’t forget to study for the Chinese history test on Friday,” Mrs. Green said after class. Julie closed her book and sighed (叹气). Julie was a perfect monitor (班长) and could organize all kinds of activities. But when she learned history, there was something hard for her to remember.
The following day, she went to the library and tried to remember all the facts and dates. But it was useless. Just then she looked up and found her classmate Maria was seated at a nearby table. So Julie decided to turn to Maria.
Maria was sitting there with some cards and some colored pencils. Each card showed a colorful picture. Julie was curious and asked, “Are you studying history?” “Yeah, and this is how I study,” Maria said. “Sometimes only memorizing things isn’t enough. I like art, so I use these pictures to help me remember historical events.”
“I see,” said Julie with great interest. After thinking for a while, an idea came to her mind. She had rich experience in organizing big events. And she always began with making small plans and taking things step by step. How did she always connect all of them in the end? Mind maps!
“Hey, Maria,” said Julie. “How about this: I divide these history events into different types and use a mind map to connect each type together. And you draw the pictures for these types as their explanation.” “That’s cool! Let’s start right now!” Maria agreed excitedly.
“Sure,” said Julie. At that time, studying didn’t seem so impossible. And what you need to do is find what you are good at and make full use of it.

Learning a language is a long course that requires time, love and devotion. With the rise of language apps, it is perhaps more popular than ever. But the apps aren’t supposed to be used alone to learn a language. To language learners, apps are a kind of tool. But that doesn’t mean you have to be trapped in them.
Not everyone can attend proper language classes, what can they do? Here are some creative ways for them to learn a new language. Follow these, they will discover the truth about language learning.
Be a child, watch cartoons
One of the most common advice for language learners is to watch films and shows in the language they are learning. But to the beginners, it’s difficult to understand without the help of subtitles (字幕). They can watch children’s cartoons instead. These cartoons are often made up of basic expressions and words. Moreover, cartoons usually come with clearer and slower pronunciation, which will help learners understand without subtitles.
Let the words flow
One has the risk of making mistakes when trying to practise in public or with local people, so start small instead. Speak to your pet or an object around the house. Tell them about your day or describe how you feel.
The goal is to get used to sounding the letters and getting the words out. As you grow more confident, come up to the waiter at a real French restaurant (or whatever language you may be working on) or a local person.
A foreign stamp
A good method to test your writing skills is to keep a penfriend. Ideally, find someone who is fluent (流利的) in the language you are learning. And he is also learning your language. Through the exchange of letters, you get to practise your writing skills. What’s more, everyone gets a friend.

Chemistry is usually thought to be more difficult than other subjects, at least for the beginners. There are some reasons for this idea. For one thing, chemistry has a very specialized vocabulary (学科专用语汇). So studying chemistry is like learning a new language at first. Also, some concepts (概念) of chemistry are hard to understand. But with hard work and careful study, you can finish this subject successfully. (A) Here are some suggestions to help you develop good study habits and better understand the topics in the book:
·Firstly, attend classes on time. Listen to your teacher and take careful notes in class. If possible, always review the topics you learn in class, and review your notes on the same day.·Secondly, think carefully whether you really understand the meaning of a term or the use of an equation (方程式). A good way to test your understanding is to explain a concept to a classmate or someone else.
·Thirdly, pay attention to things which have something to do with chemistry in life. Watch or do experiments in class carefully.
·Fourthly, question often and do not be afraid to ask your teacher or classmates for help.
You will find that chemistry is much more than numbers, formulas (分子式) and equations. (B) Once you fall in love with it, you’ll get lots of fun.

Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for advice.
I remember when I was learning English, I also felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.
▲ Other people will still know what you mean and probably won’t notice your mistakes.
Use every chance you get to speak. For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class. At home, you should also try practising new words and grammar learnt in class.
Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join conversation groups. They are usually free to join.
Practise speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.
I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.
