Hi, Tom,
Thanks for your message and I am glad that you wrote to me for advice.
I remember when I was learning English, I also felt uncomfortable about speaking. I could remember lots of words and knew grammar rules, but speaking was difficult. I now feel a lot more confident about speaking, so here are some ideas that I have taken from my own experience.
▲ Other people will still know what you mean and probably won’t notice your mistakes.
Use every chance you get to speak. For example, it’s a good idea to use only English in class. At home, you should also try practising new words and grammar learnt in class.
Think about extra speaking practice outside the classroom. You can join conversation groups. They are usually free to join.
Practise speaking online. There are lots of websites where you can communicate with someone from all around the world.
I hope this helps you and please come to me if you have other problems.

You can also try to find an online community that has the same interest as you where you can share your own ideas, thoughts and beliefs in English.
◆Dare
This usually seems to be the most difficult part, but you have to challenge yourself. If you find yourself in a situation where you have the change to use English, grab it!

Many students have problems with grammar, speaking or writing when preparing for tests, but vocabulary is the most common one. Maybe we can make it if we can get some new ways to remember new words. One way you can have a try is “structured reviewing”.
What is “structured reviewing”? It means continuous (持续的) reviewing of what we have learned in order to better understand it. We all agree that people forget information they have learned if they don’t review it in time.
I used to hate new English words. I became even angry when I lost points because of the words. But there was no use: new words couldn’t be avoided. So, I changed my ways of remembering the words. I review them in time. It seems to work well. Frank |
How do we use it? Learn five new words every day. We can learn five different sentences with a new word in each sentence. On the first day in the early morning, we can write them down a few times while reading them aloud so that we can remember them. Moreover, we need to review them six times a day, including after the first lesson, after lunch at the school and after dinner.
On the second day in the early morning, we get over the first day’s sentences. Then we learn five new sentences with five new words just as we did the day before.
For each day’s sentences, after we have reviewed them for five continued days, we just need to review them once a week. Then once a month. Through his method, we have stored them in our long-term memory and will never forget them.
Steps of “Structured Reviewing” Remember five sentences with new words— 3 —review them once a day for 5 days—review them once a week-review them once a month. |
Chart
Result of using this method. Many of us usually learn isolated words from the word list in our textbook, so we often write sentences with mistakes because we don’t know how to use the words. We should make up our own sentences with new words. In this way, we can remember the new words better than those who learn the words separately and silently.
1. What is the most common problem when students prepare for tests?2. Why does the writer mention (提及) Frank’s experience?
3. What is the second step of “structured reviewing” in the chart?
4. How can we better remember and use the new words?
5. What any other way do you often use to learn new words?
6 . Many students ask Diana, the language Doctor, for advice about how to improve their English. Here are three basic questions.
The first question is about understanding English films and songs. Lin Tao from Hubei wrote, “I like watching English films and listening to English songs, but I don’t understand very much. What can I do?”
Watching films and listening to songs are great ways to learn English! Watch and listen several times, and guess the meaning of the new words. Each time you will learn something new. I also advise you to talk about the films or songs with your friends.
The second question is about speaking. Wang Fan from Jilin wrote, “Our school has a teacher from the US. I am shy and I am afraid to speak to her. What should I do?”
You can say, “Hello! How are you?” “Do you like China?” These are good ways to start a conversation. And before you begin, you should smile at her! Remember this: Do not be shy. Just try.
The third question is about vocabulary. Zhang Lei from Anhui wrote, “I write down new words, but I forget them quickly. How can I remember them?”
Do not worry. It is natural to forget new words! I suggest you write four or five words a day on pieces of paper and place them in your room. Read the words when you see them, and try to use them.
1. How many questions are mentioned in this passage?2. What problem does Lin Tao have?
3. According to Diana, what should Lin Tao do when meeting new words?
4. If you always forget new words, what should you do after reading the passage?
5. Do you have any other questions about learning English? (至少写一条)
A good book can teach you many things. It can open your eyes and clear your minds. It is important and necessary to get into a good reading habit. Here are some ways to develop it.
Plan your time
You should read English for 30 minutes every day. When time is set, nothing can change it. For example, make it a habit to read before breakfast or lunchtime.
Always carry a book
Wherever you go, take a book with you. When you leave the house, make sure that you always carry a good book as well as your school things. Remember that a book always stays with you.
Have a library card
Have a library card and you can read as many good books as possible in the library. Make it a weekly trip to the library. This helps you spend less money on books.
Put it online
One of the best ways to develop a good reading habit is to put some e-books into your net disc (网盘) and share them with your friends. Ask your friends and family to feel your joy or sadness and offer you suggestions.

I can speak 10 languages (语言), so I know the benefits (益处) of speaking more than one language. We must change the five wrong ideas about language learning.
Language learning is difficult.
If you don’t want to learn a language, it is difficult. Learning a language takes time, but is not difficult. You need to listen and read. Soon you will enjoy speaking another language.
You have to have a gift (天赋) or learning languages
No, you don’t. Anyone who wants to can learn. In Sweden and Holland most people speak more than one language. Not all of them have such a gift. Attitude (态度) is very important for language learning.
You have to live in foreign countries
Some immigrants (移民) to the US may speak poor English. But many people in other countries can speak good English. Where you live is not important. Practice makes good speakers.
Only children can learn another language well
You’re wrong. Because adults (成年人) know more words of their mother language and know more ways to learn, they are better language learners than children.
I would love to learn but I don’t have the time
When you are doing things around the house or going for a walk, you can practise listening on your iPod. 15 or 30 minutes a day will be OK. If you really want to learn, you will find the time.
Wrong ideas | The writer’s |
Too difficult | Much listening and reading makes language learning |
You must have a good attitude to language learning. | |
Not living | People in other countries can also speak English |
Too | Adults know more words and more ways, |
Having no time | You can learn a language when you are doing |
