Just as the saying goes, “Read ten thousand books, travel ten thousand miles.” As a middle school student, I think it’s necessary and important for us to go on school trips. ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
(A: Alex, an American boy; B: Li Hua, Alex’s friend, a middle school student in Grade 9)
A: Hi, Li Hua. Long time no see!
B:
A: Happy the Year of Dragon!
B: I’m sorry, I suggest you should say “Happy the Year of Chinese Dragon or Loong”.
A:
B: Because Chinese loong and Western dragons are completely different creatures. For Chinese, loong is kind and has positive meanings to human beings. It’s usually symbols of peace, fortune, prosperity (繁荣) and authority. Even Chinese emperors call themselves “the sons of the long”. We are also proud to call ourselves the descendants of loong (龙的传人). Loong lives in water and it has serpentine (蛇形的) body covering in fish scales (鱼鳞), one head, four legs but no wings. While the dragon in your culture usually has one head, four legs with a tail and huge wings, which looks like a dinosaur or a lizard. It is usually linked with (相连的) wind, thunder and fire spray (喷火). It represents demons and enemies.
A: I see, thank you. By the way,
B: I just stayed at home and reviewed lessons during the winter holiday. You know, there’s only 4 months left before the Senior High Entrance Examination.
A: Wow, you are so hard-working and “juan”.
B: Haha, I must study hard to realize my dream.
A:
B: I want to be an engineer when I grow up.
A: Hope your dream can come true.
B:
In the 2024 Spring Festival Gala (春节联欢晚会), which program impressed (使……印象深刻) you most? Maybe you will say 《山河诗长安》. And it’s also my favorite program. I was shocked by the scene that thousands of people recite(朗诵) a poem by Li Bai together. Li Bai, who is also called “immortal poet (诗仙) ” is one of the greatest poets in the Tang Dynasty. Most of his poems were produced in the rise and fall period of the Tang Dynasty. Many people think he is romantic (浪漫的) and free, just like an immortal (神仙). However, in the Chinese cartoon movie《长安三万里》, we see a different Li Bai.
In the movie, Li dreams about being an officer. But he faces challenges after challenges. He can’t take keju (科举) because of his family. Later, he makes a mistake and is banished (流放). He has difficulties and problems just like every one of us.
However, his poems give us inspiration and confidence (自信), especially when we are in hard times. When he enjoyed nature, he said, “Its torrent dashes down three thousand feet from high; As if the silver river fell from the blue sky (飞流直下三千尺,疑是银河落九天).” When he had a setback (挫折), he said, “Heaven has made us talents; we’re not made in vain. A thousand gold coins spent, more will turn up again (天生我材必有用,千金散尽还复来).”
Li Bai might not be as perfect as we think. But it doesn’t really matter. Maybe we should thank his imperfect life, or we will lose a great poet in the world. As long as his poems are here with us, he is always the “immortal” in our hearts.

When Xiong Chuanfa, 34, blows a lifelike tiger out of sugar in just minutes, kids look at him in surprise thinking he is a magician.
Xiong has been blowing sugar figurines (糖人) for over twenty years. Blowing sugar figurines is a Chinese traditional folk (民间) art with a history of over 600 years.
Every morning, Xiong prepares the sugar and drives to different markets in Nanchang to start his magic show. He heats the sugar, pulls off a little to make a ball and blows it into different shapes—a rabbit, a monkey, and even Bing Dwen Dwen, the mascot of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. People, especially little kids, are interested in his skills.
Many college students have been drawn to the art, waiting in line for hands-on experience (实践经验). Among them, Simon, a foreign student, couldn’t help having a try.
