Summer services contacts area non-profit organizations to determine the number of volunteers needed at the organizations throughout the summer weeks. Students sign up for volunteer expectations with Summer Services at the Activities Fair on Opening Weekend. Trips are scheduled throughout the summer on Saturdays.
Harvard Summer School Orchestra
The Harvard Summer School Orchestra is currently in its thirty-fifth season and the direction of Juith Zuckerman. Practice sessions are from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m., in Sanders Theatre, on the following dates: Friday, June 28; Mondays, starting from July 1; and Friday, July 26. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, July 27, at 8 p.m. in Sanders Theatre, memorial Hall. For more information, please email hsso@verizon. net.
Harvard Summer Pops Band
This band is open to most instrument players from both Harvard and the Greater Boston area, regardless of age or experience.
Practice sessions are Wednesdays in Sanders Theatre from 7:15 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., starting from 24 June. The band will perform two concerts. The first on 23 July at 4 p.m. in Tercentenary Theater, Harvard Yard, and the second on 26 July at 3 p.m. at the Hatch Memorial Shell in Boston. For more information, email meolson @ fas. Harvard Summer Chorus
The chorus, founded in 1936, is led by Andrew Clark, Harvard University 's Director of Choral Activities. The final performance is scheduled for Friday, 2 August at 8 p.m., in Sanders Theatre, Memorial Hall. 5 . For 30 years, Eddie Rankin has been driving his truck before dawn each Saturday, coming to create a treasured weekly routine for people who populated Woodley Park and who became his devotees.
The tradition ended Saturday, when Rankin unloaded his last truck filled with fresh fruit and vegetables.
“People will probably keep coming, but it won’t be the same,” said Kate Shawcross, one of Rankin’s first customers. “He knows your children’s names and where they go to school—he’s just the classic good neighbor, and here in Washington, we need some of that.”
Rankin was a farmers market pioneer, who got into farming by accident, said Bernadine Prince, executive director of FreshFarm Markets. Rankin is the co-owner of Twin Springs Fruit Farm and has witnessed the explosion of American interest in fresh produce and locally grown food.
“He’s just one of those people who are interested in you as an individual and your tastes,” said Bernadine Prince. “Think about when you go to the supermarket: Who do you talk to? Nobody. ”
In 1984, a “farmers market” consisted of some peaches, apples and cherries that the typical American might have considered as overpriced. But Rankin drew customers charmed by his huge smile and agricultural knowledge. He remembered to set aside things you asked for, would cash your check if you needed bills and gave your 10-year-old child his or her first job.
The people who came to Saturday’s market sang to Rankin, presented him with poems about his influence on their lives and told stories of good deeds he had done for them.
Many described coming to Rankin's market as a routine in their lives.
Rankin said he is retiring because he wants to spend more time traveling to see his children and a sister back in Ireland. The children of one of Rankin’s partners are taking over Twin Springs.
He has a “fantasy,” he said, of using his knowledge to help fruit-growers elsewhere in the world.
He has faith that others can keep the Woodley Park market going, that the role of a farmers market is now established.

How to Get to the Grand Palace
Making your own way to the Grand Palace in Bangkok is more enjoyable and rewarding. Moving around by river taxi is inexpensive. Additionally, you’ll have a good excuse to see the Chao Phraya River up close. Going by boat won’t make you caught in traffic jams. It will let you see beautiful river scenery!
People staying in the Khao San Road area may choose to walk (around 20 — 25 minutes) to the Grand Palace.
Opening Hours
The Grand Palace is open seven days a week from 8:30 a. m. until 3:30 p. m. Occasionally, the Grand Palace does actually close for official visits and state functions. However, this is rare. Don’t believe any driver who states the Grand Palace is closed. If the statement of closure is too convincing, confirm it by calling: +6626235500 ext.3100.
Entrance Fees
Considering that temples in Thailand are often free, the 500 baht (around $16) per person entrance fee at the Grand Palace is relatively expensive. Thai nationals do not have to pay. An audio tour can be rented for an additional 200 baht. Besides, human guides are available for hire. Choose an official guide rather than accepting someone’s offer on the outside.
Dress Standards at the Grand Palace
To show enough respect, you shouldn’t wear sleeveless shirts in any temple or state building in Thailand. But unlike many of the other temples, dress standards are strictly required at the Grand Palace.
Men must wear long trousers, women must cover legs to just above the knee.
Don’t wear shirts with religious themes or symbols of death on them.
You may be told outside that flip-flops (人字拖鞋) are unacceptable footwear.

We headed into a conference room, where she began firing off questions about how I balance work and family. As the questions came faster and faster, I started to wonder about her urgency. By the time they are in college, women are already thinking about the trade-offs they will make between professional and personal goals! When asked to choose between marriage and career, female college students are twice as likely to choose marriage as their male classmates. And this concern can start even younger. Peggy Orenstein, the author of Cinderella Ate My Daughter, related the story of a five-year-old girl who came home distraught from her after-school program and told her mother that both she and the boy she had a crush on wanted to be astronauts.When her mother asked why that was a problem, the little girl replied, “When we go into space together,who will watch out kids?” At five,she thought the most challenging aspect of space travel would be dependable childcare.
As I’ve mentioned, I’m a big believe in thoughtful preparation. Everywhere I go, I carry a little notebook with my to-do list. But when it comes to integrating career and family, planning too far in advance can close doors rather than open them. I have seen this happen over and over. Women rarely make one big decision to leave the workforce. Instead, they make a lot of small decision along the way, making accommodations and sacrifices that they believe will be required to have a family. Of all the ways women hold themselves back, perhaps the most pervasive is that they leave before they leave.
