1 . A year back I received a full scholarship (奖学金) to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work paid off. My mom had spent a lot on my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, took part in various clubs, and graduated with honors. I was so excited to start a new part of my life.

Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn't like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep. I was missing my family, my home and everything in my hometown so much and I didn't know how to deal with my broken heart.

To_distract_myself,_I threw myself into my studies. I also found a ton of jobs. In any free time, I started forcing myself to go to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn't think about how lonely I felt. Soon after, I began to control my eating, considering it another solution to my homesickness(想家). But soon there was something wrong with me.

Finally, I went to see a doctor. When the doctor told me I had no choice but to take time away from school, I started to fear. How could I stop? School was what I was best at. “I'm not so bad,” I thought in my head. But the result was that I was taken to hospital again a month later and my mother came heartbrokenly. I had to take a semester off from school, and go to the treatment center near my home.

If there are girls who are suffering similarly, I hope you know that there is hope and that you should have a positive attitude towards life. Though you may feel alone, there are so many people who can understand your struggle. That's why I want to share my story.

1. What can we know about the author in high school?

2 . There are many therapies (疗法) for depression, including medical treatment, psychotherapy and talk therapy. Having a range of treatment choices is a good idea because no single treatment works equally well for each of millions of sufferers. Choosing the most suitable treatment is important to them. Now researchers say a new therapy proven to relieve depression should be added to the established treatments. It's called nature therapy. "Interacting with nature can have positive effects on those with depression," says Ethan Kross, PhD, an expert who has studied the nature depression link.

A little exposure to nature helps all of us get our energy back, and it may have special benefit for those who are depressed.“It seems that, from our work, the restorative effect of nature seems to be stronger for individuals with depression," says Marc Berman, PhD, an assistant professor of psychology at the University of Chicago. That might be because they feel mentally exhausted, and being in nature re energizes them. However, Dr Berman has a strong warning. “We're not arguing that interacting with nature should replace clinically proven treatments for depression," he says, “Nor should those with clinical depression try to treat themselves.”

However, Berman and others say, interactions with nature could serve as a very effective supplementary treatment. Compared to adults with depression walking for 50 minutes in an urban setting, those who took a 50 minute walk in a natural setting were less depressed and had better memory skills.

Why does nature hold this special effect? Berman says, “In a natural environment, we can choose to think or not, and this choice is believed to help us rest our brains. You can then pay attention later, when you need to.”He adds, “It gives people more ability to concentrate, which is a big problem for those with depression. ”Nature provides an effective setting for resting our brains, unlike urban setting. Even in the most peaceful urban environment, you have to pay attention to such things as traffic and stoplights.

1. What can we learn about depression therapies from paragraph 1?
A.They focus on physical activity.
B.They pay no attention to interactions.
C.They mainly depend on natural environment.
D.They need to be tailored to different patients.
2. How does nature benefit patients with depression?
A.By making them feel energetic.B.By reminding them to rest in time.
C.By taking the place of clinic treatment.D.By covering up their mental problems.
3. What does the underlined word “supplementary" in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Additional.B.Traditional.C.Controversial.D.Essential.
4. What is the text mainly about?
A.An urban setting of restoring energy.
B.The positive role of nature in treating depression.
C.The popularity of using multiple ways to treat diseases.
D.An effective replacement of clinical therapy for depression.

3 . If Confucius(孔子)were still alive today and could celebrate his September 28 birthday with a big cake, there would be a lot of candles. He'd need a fan or a strong wind to help him put them out.

While many people in China will remember Confucius on his special day, few people in the United States will give him a passing thought. It's nothing personal. Most Americans don't even remember the birthdays of their own national heroes.

But this doesn't mean that Americans don't care about Confucius. In many ways he has become a bridge that foreigners must cross if they want to reach a deeper understanding of China.

In the past two decades, the Chinese studies programs have gained huge popularity in Western universities. More recently, the Chinese government has set up Confucius Institutes in more than 80 countries. These schools teach both Chinese language and culture. The main courses of Chinese culture usually include Chinese art, history and

philosophy(哲学). Some social scientists suggest that Westerners should take advantage of the ancient Chinese wisdom to make up for the drawbacks(缺陷)of Western philosophy. Students in the United States, at the same time, are racing to learn Chinese. So they will be ready for life in a world where China is an equal power with the United States. Businessmen who hope to make money in China are reading books about Confucius to understand their Chinese customers.

So the old thinker's ideas are still alive and well.

Today China attracts the West more than ever, and it will need more teachers to introduce Confucius and Chinese culture to the West.

As for the old thinker, he will not soon be forgotten by people in the West, even if his birthday is.

5 . After an earthquake most survivors can be expected to recover over time, particularly with the support of family and friends. Some families will be able to return to their normal life quickly, while others will have to contend with the destruction of their homes, medical problems, and injury to family members. Children especially will need time to recover from the loss of a loved one or a pet or from the closing down of their school.

Children often turn to adults for information, comfort and help. Parents should try to remain calm, answer children’s questions honestly and remain understanding when they see changes in their children’s behavior.

Children react differently to an earthquake depending on their ages, developmental levels and former experiences. Some will respond by withdrawing (不与人交往), while others will have angry outbursts (爆发). Parents should remain sensitive to each child’s reactions. Parents should spend time talking to their children, letting them know that it’s OK to ask questions and to share their worries. Although it may be hard to find time to have these talks, parents can use regular family mealtimes or bedtimes for them. They should answer questions briefly and honestly and be sure to ask their children for their opinions and ideas. Issues may come up more than once and parents should remain patient when you answer the questions again. For young children, parents, after talking about the earthquake, might read a favorite story or have a relaxing family activity to help them calm down. Parents should also tell children they are safe and spend extra time with them. They could play games outside or read together indoors. Most importantly, be sure to tell them you love them.

1. The underlined phrase “contend with” in Paragraph 1 can be replaced by “________”.
A.deal withB.make upC.put offD.turn back
2. When children ask the same question again, parents should ________.
A.read a favorite story to comfort them

A.Keep a close watch on children’s behavior.
B.Tell the children they are safe.
C.Tell the children you love them.
D.Ask educational experts for help.
4. What can we know from the passage?
A.All people will recover from an earthquake quickly.
B.Children may need a longer time to recover after an earthquake.
C.Children should turn to their classmates for help after an earthquake.

6 . Brazil sports are out of control! Brazil may be one of the most sportscrazy countries in the world. Whether you are into watching or playing, Brazil sports have a lot to offer everyone.

Football in Brazil is more than a sport. It's a way of life. Football is popular in Brazil for several reasons. One reason is that it is fast paced and fun to watch. This is the reason why the World Cup Soccer is the most watched sports event in the world aside from the Summer Olympics. No nation has won as many world cups as Brazil.

Brazil has nearly 5,000 miles of coastline. If you go to a beach in Brazil, there will always be a volleyball game going on somewhere, and usually two or three.

Footvolley was created in Brazil in the 1960s. It is a mix of football and volleyball, where the players must use their feet and head to get the ball over the net and into the opponents' court, and is also played in sand. It is one of the most popular beach sports in Brazil.

7 . Trackers on Ice

Just because a scientist puts a GPS tracking collar on a wild polar bear does not mean the animal will willingly keep it on.   _______, these huge collars are purposefully loose so that if one becomes annoying, a bear can _______it. But scientists have now found a way to use signals from the discarded(丢弃的)devices.

“These dropped collars_______would have been considered garbage data,” says Natasha Klappstein, a polar bear researcher at the University of Alberta. She and her colleagues instead used_______from such collars, left on sea ice in Canada's Hudson Bay, to track the ice itself. For their study, published in June in The Cryosphere, the researchers _______twenty collars that sent movement data consistent(与······一致的)with ice drift rather than polar bear _______between 2005 and 2015. The resulting records of how melting ice typically drifts in Hudson Bay are unique; there are no easily _______on-the-ground sensors, and satellite observations often cannot _______capture the motion of small ice sheets.

The team compared the discarded collars' movements with widely used ice-drift modeling data from the U.S. National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). Collar data indicated that the NSIDC model underestimates the speed at which ice moves around in Hudson Bay--as well as the overall _______of drift. Over the course of several months the model could drift away from an ice sheet's location by a few hundred kilometers, the researchers say.

This means the bears may be working harder, when moving against the direction of the ice, than scientists had   ________ .“Since we're underestimating the speed of drift, we're likely underestimating the energetic effort of polar bears," says Natasha Klappstein. The research reveals________insight (洞悉) into how highly mobile ice moves. As melting increases in coming years, such ice will likely become more ________farther north, in the central Arctic. Scientists had known NSIDC data could underestimate drift speeds, but “any time we can find a data ________,it is a good thing.”

Plus, such data could improve predictions about how oil spills or other pollutants may spread in seas ________ with drifting ice, says Walt Meier, a senior NSIDC research scientist, who was not involved in the study. The findings may even ________future NSIDC models. “It's a really nice data set,” Meier says."And certainly one we’ll take consideration.

8 . Some people say global English is no longer just controlled by British or American English, but is running free and developing uniquely local forms. Can you figure out the following terms?

“I like your smile, but unlike you put your shoes on my face.”This is a way of saying“Keep off the grass.”Or“people mountain, people sea”,which means“very crowded”.

These examples are what we call Chinglish. When it comes to Chinglish,if all you know is“good good study, day day up”,you will be considered“out man”.

Nowadays, more Chinglish words have been created, for example,a Chinese idiom is translated as“smilence”,a combination by the English word smile and silence.

Chinglish usually offers a humorous look at misuses of the English language in Chinese street signs, products, and advertising. They are favoured by some English speaking tourists and visitors.Dominic Swire has been living in Beijing for a couple of years.“I think many Chinese people complain about the Chinglish and badly translated English. But you know, sometimes for us foreigners,it’s actually quite charming to see them.I think if the translations of English in China were all perfect, then something would be lost from Chinese culture.”

However,Chinglish will probably become a“cultural relic”in the near future.Beijing has made a comprehensive plan to improve foreign language services and correct Chinglish within five years.“It is very ridiculous to see Chinglish on the signs in some scenic spots. And they are a kind of barrier for communication between Chinese and people from other countries,”a Beijinger said.

Some Chinese university experts side with Chinglish. They argue that English has absorbed elements from other languages such as French and Spanish in its growth, and now it’s Chinese’s turn.

1. What can we call Chinglish?
A.English words which get new Chinese meanings.
B.The Chinese words which are difficult to translate.
C.The words combining English vocabulary and Chinese grammar.
D.The local words preventing foreigners from learning Chinese well.
2. What does“smilence”most probably mean?
A.Saying nothing but to smile.B.Smiling without being noticed.
C.Laughing at somebody.D.Knowing little about speech.
3. What is Swire’s attitude to Chinglish?
A.It can show the humour of Chinese.B.It will attract more foreign tourists.
C.It helps him to learn Chinese well.D.It seems part of Chinese culture.
4. Why Chinglish is likely to become a“cultural relic”in Beijing?
A.Because it has become a unique bridge between Chinese and English.
B.Because Chinglish is a chance to enrich Chinese and English.
C.Because it improves the understanding between Chinese and foreigners.
D.Because Beijing is determined to get rid of Chinglish signs.

9 . Most of us lead unhealthy lives; we spend far too much sitting down. If in addition we are careless about our diets, our bodies soon become loose and fatty and our systems slow moving. There are some aspects (方面) of our unhealthy lives that we cannot avoid. I am thinking of such features of modern city life as pollution, noise, rushed meals and stress. But keeping fit is a way to reduce the effects of these evils. The usual suggestion to a person who is looking for a way to keep fit is to take up some sport or other. While it is true that every weekend you will find people playing football and hockey in the local park, they are outnumbered a hundred to one by the people who are simply watching them.

For those who do not particularly enjoy competitive sports—and it is especially difficult to do so if you are not good at them—there are such separate activities as cycling, walking, jogging and swimming. What often happens though is that you do them in such a leisurely way, so slowly, that it is doubtful if you are doing yourself much good, except for the fact that you have at least managed to get up out of your armchair.

Even after you have found a way for keeping in shape, through sport or gymnastics, you are still only half way to good health, because, according to the experts, you must also master the art of complete mental and physical relaxation. It has to do with deep breathing, emptying your mind of all thoughts, meditation, and so on. Yoga, as practiced in the West, is the most widely known and popular of the systems for achieving the necessary state of relaxation. It seems ironical (讽刺性的), though, that as our lives have improved in a material sense we have found it increasingly necessary to go back to forms of activity—physical effort on the one hand and relaxation on the other—which were the natural way of life of our forefathers.

1. Pollution, noise and stress are examples of ________.
A.causes of unfitness
B.bad features of living in cities
C.the things we can completely do away with
D.unavoidable things in town
2. To be healthy we must ________.
A.keep fit and active
B.keep fit and learn to relax
C.be active and practise Yoga
D.have a sound mind
3. Our forefathers were healthy because ________.
A.their way of life closely connected with both exercise and relaxation
B.they were careful to get plenty of fresh air
C.they spent most of the time out of doors
D.their environment was not polluted
4. What would be the best title for the text?
A.How to Keep Fit
B.How to Learn to Relax
C.How to Live a Healthy Life
D.How to Practice Yoga
