3 . The following is part of an interview between Professor Bernard Feringa (a Nobel Price winner) and a CNN reporter.

Q: You often say that universities should be playgrounds. How can we make sure that this is a case?

A: I’m a strong believer in challenging students at all levels — to think, to discover and to go beyond the current knowledge. The universities have a special role here, because academic training and science should go beyond the current horizon. I think that we shouldn’t forget that we shouldn’t train our students for today or tomorrow; we should train them for 10 to 20 years from now. Because then they will be the innovators in our society, and they will be the persons that make a difference. Train our students for future means that they have to be able to surpass the border of our current knowledge. This is what I mean with playground. I mean that you have sufficient space to think, to discover and to be free to make mistakes, but in particular to make the next steps, be creative and not limited by what should be done. A lot of things happen by accident and suddenly you get a major breakthrough or new insight. Schools should encourage students to ask questions and be creative.

Q: What is it that you like so much about teaching?

A: I really enjoy the transfer of the beauty of knowledge: insights, questions, things that we don’t know, or the limitations of what we know. I never get tired of my job. I think that you share with your students the opportunity to transfer some knowledge, but also get a lot of things back by asking questions and discussing. Across all fields, from natural sciences to humanities, you have knowledge and insights built upon generations and decades. At the universities we have to transfer a lot of knowledge and teach students the basic skills and techniques. But it’s also our duty to go beyond that — to ask them questions about what we don’t know and what improvements we can make for the future. Doing surgery in the hospital now might be taken over by robots in the future. How are we going to deal with that? Or will we be able to make fuel for airplanes? These are challenging and tough questions but to share those with the students is really nice. Most of all, I think the beauty of knowledge and the excitement of insights and discoveries is fantastic.
1. What does the professor agree to?
A.Students are bound to surpass their present teachers.
B.Students are expected to be different future citizens.
C.Students are supposed to have more academic training.
D.Students should definitely be encouraged to be challenged.
2. What does “plavground” mean to Bernard Feringa?
A.An area for physical activities.B.An area for extra-curricular experiments.
C.An area for bold exploration.D.An area for academic improvements.
3. Which saying can best describe the reason for the professor’s devotion to teaching?
A.He who teaches learns.B.Work makes a workman.
C.Never too old to learn.D.Truth never fears investigation.
4. How can you describe Professor Bernard Feringa?
A.Respectable and reliable.B.Innovative and devoted.

4 . Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101. “Lear’s hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.

Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut, where an unexpected accident brought about his father’s business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army. In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door. Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for a nightclub comedy act.

By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn’t get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear’s life was to change.

This successful show was just the beginning of Lear’s dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up. It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear’s own family after watching All in the Family.

8 . If you have a chance to talk with a historical figure, who would you like it to be? What would you like to know about the past or share from today? China in the Classics, a new TV show based on Chinese classics started by China Central Television (CCTV) in February, is exploring such possibilities.

In the first episode, the host of the show, Sa Beining, meets ancient Confucian scholar Fu Sheng, who interpreted Shangshu The Book of Documents. Regarded as one of the five classics of ancient Chinese Confucianism masterpieces, the book records many firsts in the country. Even the expression zhongguo (China) is used there first.

The episode ends with the host bringing Fu to today’s modern society, where the scholar is happy to find children learning the same things he had learned in his childhood. It increased the rating of the series with viewers giving it 9 out of 10 on Douban, a film and TV show reviewing website popular among young people.

The success of China in the Classics doesn’t surprise Shen Haixiong, head of the China Media Group. Shen said in an article in the journal Qiushi, “We are happy to see the program is popular among the public, but we are prouder to find that innovative interpretation of Chinese classics is arousing young people’s interest in Chinese culture.”

Therefore, TV channels have been making bold attempts in recent years to attract today’s younger generations. The Nation’s Greatest Treasures, CCTV’s cultural show in 2017, showcased China’s history and culture through antiques in the top-class museums, and fired up the audience. The treasures include the 3,300-year-old Yinxu Ruins in Henan Province and the 1,300-year-old Potala Palace in Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region.

CCTV should make a variety of programs showcasing classics and cultural traditions to appeal to the young generation’s aesthetics, said Zhou, a professor at the School of Arts and Communication, Beijing Normal University.

1. Why is The Book of Documents mentioned in paragraph 2?
A.To introduce a historical figure.B.To inform us of the host.
C.To show the popularity of the show.D.To describe a new TV show.
2. What is Shen Haixiong’s attitude towards the programme on Chinese classics?
A.Surprised.B.Confused.C.Satisfied.D.Neutral.
3. What is paragraph 5 mainly about?
A.Chinese treasures.B.Another TV programme.
C.Yinxu Ruins in Henan.D.Young Chinese audience.
4. Which of the following could be the best title for the text?
A.CCTV Produces Some Famous TV showsB.TV Shows on Chinese Classics Grow Popular
C.Scholars Focus Attention on Chinese ClassicsD.China in the Classics Fires up the Audience

9 . Last weekend was terrible for awards ceremonies. The BAFTAS,defined by a painful monologue(独角戏)from Joanna Lumley, was watched by 500,000 fewer people than last year. Meanwhile, the number of 18﹣to 49-year-olds watching the Grammys has reached an all-time low.

Don't expect the Oscars to fare any better;they have lost millions of viewers since 2014. Add to the fact that comparatively few people have watched most of the nominated films and you have got a ratings time bomb.

Viewers are deserting awards shows in groups and something needs to be done. But what?Reorganize them to celebrate really popular work? That's what the Oscars put forward last year when it suggested a best popular film category﹣and it was swiftly booed(喝倒彩)out of town.

Another option would be to shorten the length of the ceremonies, but this won't work either. The Oscars recently announced plans to hide several categories in ad breaks, and the anger in some quarters(the cinematographers, makeup artists and editors who this year won't get their moment on the small screen)has been obvious.

What else can they do? Fewer songs? Shorter speeches? An In Memoriam section that consists of the words: "People die: get over it"?

Fortunately, I have the perfect solution: don't televise awards shows. Just don't do it. Awards shows are the opposite of good television. They're too long and too boring because of regular and repeated patterns and too self﹣important. And by God, we should have learned by now not to give celebrities any more attention than they already have. It just makes them think that we want to hear them giving out half﹣baked opinions about Donald Trump and Brexit.

I'm not suggesting that the awards shows shouldn't happen. I'm just saying that the awards should be announced in the form of a press release at the end of the ceremony, followed by a handful of You Tube clips showing some nice outfits and a couple of speeches. That's how most of us consume them now anyway.

1. Why does the writer mention the BAFTAS and the Grammys?
A.To introduce the topic of the article.
B.To support the topic of the paragraph.
C.To attract the readers' attention.
D.To make comparison with the Oscars.
2. What does the underlined word "it" in paragraph 3 refer to?
A.The best popular film category.
B.The best actress.
C.The reorganized Oscars.
D.The deserted awards show.
3. What's the writer's opinion on awards shows?
A.Awards shows are better if shortened.
B.Awards shows are excellent television.
C.Awards shows are important to us.
D.Awards shows should be shown in another form.
4. What is the passage mainly about?
A.The bright future of awards shows.
B.What terrible awards shows.
C.Stopping the television of awards shows.
D.Boycott attention to celebrities.
