Q: You often say that universities should be playgrounds. How can we make sure that this is a case?
A: I’m a strong believer in challenging students at all levels — to think, to discover and to go beyond the current knowledge. The universities have a special role here, because academic training and science should go beyond the current horizon. I think that we shouldn’t forget that we shouldn’t train our students for today or tomorrow; we should train them for 10 to 20 years from now. Because then they will be the innovators in our society, and they will be the persons that make a difference. Train our students for future means that they have to be able to surpass the border of our current knowledge. This is what I mean with playground. I mean that you have sufficient space to think, to discover and to be free to make mistakes, but in particular to make the next steps, be creative and not limited by what should be done. A lot of things happen by accident and suddenly you get a major breakthrough or new insight. Schools should encourage students to ask questions and be creative.
Q: What is it that you like so much about teaching?
A: I really enjoy the transfer of the beauty of knowledge: insights, questions, things that we don’t know, or the limitations of what we know. I never get tired of my job. I think that you share with your students the opportunity to transfer some knowledge, but also get a lot of things back by asking questions and discussing. Across all fields, from natural sciences to humanities, you have knowledge and insights built upon generations and decades. At the universities we have to transfer a lot of knowledge and teach students the basic skills and techniques. But it’s also our duty to go beyond that — to ask them questions about what we don’t know and what improvements we can make for the future. Doing surgery in the hospital now might be taken over by robots in the future. How are we going to deal with that? Or will we be able to make fuel for airplanes? These are challenging and tough questions but to share those with the students is really nice. Most of all, I think the beauty of knowledge and the excitement of insights and discoveries is fantastic.1. What does the professor agree to?

2 . Norman Lear, a genius producer and screenwriter, passed away on Tuesday in Los Angeles at the age of 101. “Lear’s hit comedy shows changed television forever,” said Darnel Hunt, a leading artist on TV.
Lear grew up in an ordinary family in Connecticut, where an unexpected accident brought about his father’s business collapse. So he had to drop out of college and joined the army. In his late 20s, he moved to Los Angeles where he struggled hard for several years, selling furniture door to door. Later on, unsatisfied with his life, he eventually turned to writing for a nightclub comedy act.
By 1971, when he was almost 50, Lear had produced and directed some shows, among which was the hit show All in the Family. In the beginning, it didn’t get on the air smoothly. However, once it did, this show made it to the top 10 for eight of its nine seasons, promising Lear’s life was to change.
This successful show was just the beginning of Lear’s dominating position in comedy shows. Then came The Jeffersons, about a family on its way up. It ran for eleven seasons, one of the longest running comedy shows on television, becoming another successful story. When interviewed about the hit of his shows, Lear said, “Our team read two or three newspapers a day, paid a lot of attention to our families, and came in to talk about everything that was affecting us in our daily lives.” Therefore, it came as no surprise that viewers had a sense of Lear’s own family after watching All in the Family.
“Routinely, Lear’s shows might get fifty or sixty million viewers. He was in direct contact with the living rooms and families of the country,” says Marty Kaplan, founding director of the Norman Lear Center. “Lear did everything with humor and sympathy.”

4 . In July 2020, Luo Zixin, a student at Changsha No 1 High School, celebrated the ending of the national college entrance exam with a split leap. The moment was snapped by a photographer, which quickly went viral online. This photo, which is widely thought to symbolize Chinese youngsters’ optimistic spirit toward finishing the exam amid the pandemic, has inspired the TV series The Examination for Everyone.
Gao Changli, head of the TV program department with the administration, said a total of 16 meetings were organized to discuss the creation details and they finally decided to show a “positive, friendly and lovely” group of youngsters set in a county.
Centering on six families, the TV series was shot in 64 days before it took another 81 days to finish postproduction, which is more efficient than most domestic dramas, according to Wang Xiaohui, the chief executive producer.
The series tells the story of high school students, teachers and parents in Jinhe County, Anhui Province, who overcame difficulties resulted by the COVID-19 pandemic and flood to complete the “big exam” of life with the joint efforts of the party, government and all sectors of society.

In fact, the myth acts as the first story in the documentary One Cup, A Thousand Stories. This six-episode BBC new documentary, each lasting 50 minutes or so, was filmed for three years in 13 countries across six continents, giving the audience a chance to examine tea’s influence on daily life in different places, as well as revealing the planting and picking techniques. It is shown on Chinese streaming platform Migu Video and runs on the BBC Earth Channel for Asia as an attempt to promote tea and its culture to overseas audiences.
Shot in 4K high-definition resolution, the documentary’s Chinese version is narrated by Liu Cong, a voice actor known for the animated series The Silver Guardian, and the international version is narrated by English actor Hugh Bonneville, known for Downton Abbey and The Paddington Franchise.
Other stories reflecting tea’s impact include a martial artist achieving inner peace, a key element of his practice, in Mount Emei in Sichuan Province; the wedding ceremony of a young couple in Malaysia where serving tea is an important way of expressing gratitude to parents; and a family in Fuzhou, Fujian Province that is dedicated to producing jasmine tea.
Tea is China’s great gift to humanity. According to the documentary, tea has become more popular with consumption increasing 25 percent in the last decade, and various drinking methods are enjoyed by billions of people across the world.

10 . Chinese television maker Skyworth Group is strengthening efforts to venture into the 5G-powered 8K ultra-high definition TV section, especially the whole industrial chain related to the top-notch 8K technology, as it aims to grab a bigger slice of the country’s high-end TV market.
Wang Zhiguo, chairman and president of Shenzhen Skyworth-RGB Electronic, said the company is committed to providing a complete 8K solution that covers 8K video cameras, monitors, content creation and cloud operating systems, and expands application in a wide range of fields such as aerial photography, education, healthcare and advertising.
The company uncovered its new 8K TV product Q71, which supports 8K signal reception, decoding, image signal processing and screen display. The 8K TVs have a screen resolution ratio that is 4.3 times clearer than human eyesight and four times higher than the 4K ones. 8K UHD livestreaming and cloud-based broadcasting will give viewers a more immersive experience.
“5G offers technological support for the adoption of 8K, while 8K is one of the best application scenarios of the superfast wireless technology, ” said Wu Wei, chief engineer of Skyworth, adding 5G has the advantages of high speed, large capacity and low latency, which brings about a good opportunity for the popularization of 8K ultra-high definition TV. And the country’s 8K video industry will see robust growth with the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics, which will use 8K UHD livestreaming and transmission.
The domestic 8K TV industry is now in a nascent stage, Wu said, adding that Skyworth will intensify research and development efforts in 8K chips to improve the clarity, contrast and brightness of images.
“While there is a shortage of 8K video content, which requires advanced, professional equipment such as special cameras and monitors, increasing the cost of producing content, with the advent of superfast 5G technology and the popularization of big TVs, 8K has created many opportunities. The broadcasting of sporting events via 8K equipment has also motivated people to demand high-definition image quality,” said Liu Fei, research director of the consumer electronics department of Skyworth.
