2 . In the African country of Malawi, fishing is a way of life for people who live near lakes. Fishing employs over 50,000 people there. Traditionally, the fishers have several methods to dry the fish for the market. They include frying, smoking, or placing them on wire racks. But since the fishers dry their catch in the open air, about half of it slowly breaks down and goes bad. And some animals even try to eat the catch.
Now, solar tents are being used to help dry fish on Lake Chilwa, Malawi’s second-largest lake. The solar tent is made from clear plastic. The plastic is stretched over a large wooden structure. The tent looks like a greenhouse, a glass building where plants can grow in the cold weather.
Jennifer Mussa is a local fish trader. “When we collect fish from the lake, we dry them inside this solar fish dryer,” she said. In the past, it would take one-and-a-half to two days to dry. Now the fishers will put it in the morning; by the evening, they can take the fish out. The solar tents have also helped fish traders get higher prices at the market for cleaner, better-quality fish.
Money for the tents came from Cultivate Africa’s Future. The organization works to improve fishing and farming methods with simple inventions. The goal is to increase access to food, resources, and markets for the communities. The organization also encourages people to use energy-saving kiln ovens to smoke fish, not open fires. Then people can cut down fewer trees for firewood.

5 . Big Brothers Big Sisters is based on the simplicity and power of friendship. It is a program which provides friendship and fun by matching vulnerable young people(ages7-17)with a volunteer adult who can be both a role model and a supportive friend.
Volunteer tutors come from all walks of life — married, single, with or without children. Big Brothers and Big Sisters are not replacement parents or social workers. They are tutors: someone to trust, to have fun with, to talk and go to when needed.
A Big Sister and Little Sister will generally spend between one and four hours together three or four times each month for at least twelve months. They enjoy simple activities such as a picnic at a park, cooking, playing sport or going to a football match. These activities improve the friendship and help the young person develop positive self-respect, confidence and life direction.

7 . A year after he died at the age of 17, a young man's love of helping others lives on. Through a foundation established by his parents, Benjamin Canlas is still making the world a better place.
The Benjamin Canlas Courage to be Kind Foundation gives away mountain bikes to Filipinos who are struggling to make ends meet.
Dr. Glennda Canlas and her husband created the foundation to remember their son and his kindness. One time, Benjamin saw a food seller riding a beat-up bicycle with its pedals missing. He used his own savings to replace them. After Benjamin's death, his parents saw a way to connect their private donors with those in need.
In the Philippines, many businesses have been closed and many jobs have been lost as a result of the coronavirus crisis. This has left thousands of Filipinos struggling to survive and many have to take odd jobs, which means traveling from one place to another. However, public transportation has been severely restricted. So many people have no choice but to complete those jobs on foot, walking hours in the sun or rain.
Benjamin's parents had the idea to give away bikes to deserving individuals nominated by their friends or coworkers. When the giveaway contest was announced, they received more than 50 nominations, all of which were then checked for truthfulness. And on July 11, 27 individuals got bicycles that would help make their lives a little less difficult. Even as the contest ended, nominations continued to come in. The foundation said there are people still in need and much work needs to be done.

10 . Founder Lia Grimanis herself experienced homelessness as a teen growing up in Toronto. She got the idea for Up With Women when she received career coaching while working for a teel company. Unlike consultation, where clients work through issues from their pasts, coaching is about the future.
She realized that women who really needed professional development help from a coach could never actually afford it. “All of our clients are living below the poverty line, but some coaches are charging $350 to $600 an hour.” she says.
Up With Women matches participants with certificated career coaches who provide one-on-one sessions twice a month for one year. The strategy is working. So far, the organization has helped more than 400 women. In the 2016-2017 group, roughly 70 percent of them saw an increase in their income, On average, they were making S 12, 383 more per year than women still on the organization’s waiting list. While it’s harder to measure confidence levels. Grimanis sees an increase there, too. And those difficult to quantify results can be the most powerful.
Harmeet Toor, Up With Women’s director of operations and programs, was once a client herself. For Toor, one of the most powerful parts of her coaching experience was learning to shed the idea that she should limit her goals.
Five months into Toor’s coaching sessions. she 'd found a place to live. By the eight-month mark, she 'd landed a job at a doctor’s office. And now she’s figuring out how to help others like Smith, who was finally able to start a law school in 2018.
“I owe it to Up With Women for helping me get here,” Smith says. “Of course, I have the drive and the determination, but I wouldn’t be in the law school if I didn’t have that coaching.”
