文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。文章主要报道了日本计划在未来两年内将福岛核电站处理过的放射性废水排入太平洋的消息,并描述了相关的背景、进展和各方反应。

1 . Japan said Tuesday that it would start pouring treated radioactive water (放射性废水) from the Fukushima nuclear power plant into the Pacific Ocean within two years. Officials in Tokyo said the water would be filtered and diluted (稀释) to safe levels first, but most locals remain firmly opposed to the plan. Protesters gathered outside Prime Minister Yoshihide Suga’s residence in downtown Tokyo to criticize the government’s decision.

More than a million tons of radioactive water is currently being stored at the Fukushima power plant in a massive tank farm big enough to fill 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools. The wastewater comes from water pumped in to cool the plant’s damaged reactors (反应堆). The government says it has simply run out of room to store all the water. The plan to dump the water into the ocean first came to light in the autumn of last year, when Japanese news reported anonymous (匿名的) officials said the decision had been taken.

On Tuesday, Suga said that after years of study, his scientific advisors had concluded that ocean discharge was the most possible way to cope with the wastewater. But the decision to pour Fukushima wastewater into the ocean has drawn fire from neighboring Asian countries and local fishermen along Japan’s coast.

China called the decision “extremely irresponsible,” and South Korea summoned (召唤) the Japanese ambassador in Seoul over the matter. “They told us that they wouldn’t release the water into the sea without the support of fishermen,” Kanji Tachiya, who leads a local cooperative of fisheries in Fukushima, told national broadcaster NHK ahead of the announcement on Tuesday. “We can’t support this move to break that promise and release the water into the sea unilaterally (单方面地).”

The actual release of water from the Fukushima plant will take decades to complete. Critics have called on Japan’s government to at least ensure that independent monitoring is in place to check the level of radiation in the poured water is safe for the environment.

1. How do most of the local people react to the plan?
A.Indifferent.B.Uncertain.C.Supportive.D.Disapproving.
2. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.The wastewater is being stored in 500 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
B.It was last year that the plan was exposed to the public.
C.Ocean discharge is the only way to deal with the wastewater.
D.The plan has aroused anger in all the Asian countries.
3. What does Kanji Tachiya probably agree with?
A.The plan is to pull the whole world into the disaster.
B.It’s imperative that the plan should be carried out immediately.
C.It’s safe and easy to pour the wastewater into the ocean.
D.It’s unacceptable to pour the water into the ocean without fishermen’s permission.
4. What can we infer from the passage?
A.The Japanese government has checked the level of radiation in the poured water.
B.Neigboring Asian countries agreed the decision to pour Fukushima wastewater into the ocean..
C.It will actually take the Fukushima plant long to release treated radioactive water.
D.Independent monitoring of the water from the Fukushima plant aren’t necessary.

文章大意:本文是一篇新闻报道。报道了美国国家航空航天局(NASA)进行的一次小行星防御测试,即使用航天器撞击小行星以改变其轨道的实验。

2 . Nuclear bombs. That’s the go-to answer for incoming space objects like asteroids (小行星) and comets, as far as Hollywood is concerned. Movies like Deep Impact and Armageddon rely on nuclear weapons, delivered by stars like Bruce Willis, to save the world and deliver the drama.

But planetary defense experts say in reality, if astronomers spotted a dangerous incoming space rock, the safest and best answer might be something more subtle, like simply pushing it off course by crashing it with a small spacecraft.

That’s just what NASA did on Monday evening, when a spacecraft headed straight into an asteroid called Dimorphos, which is around 7 million miles away and poses no threat to Earth. It’s about 525 feet across and orbits another larger asteroid.

In images streamed as the impact neared, the egg-shaped asteroid grew in size from a little spot on screen to having its full rocky surface come quickly into focus before the signal went dead as the craft hit right on target.

Events happened exactly as engineers had planned, they said, with nothing going wrong. “As far as we can tell, our first planetary defense test was a success,” said Elena Adams, the mission systems engineer, who added that scientists looked on with “both terror and joy” as the spacecraft neared its final destination.

The impact was the peak of NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), a 7- year and more than $ 300 million effort which launched a space vehicle in November of 2021 to perform humanity’s first ever test of planetary defense technology. It will be about two months, scientists said, before they will be able to determine if the impact was enough to drive the asteroid slightly off course, probably shortening its original orbit.

NASA plans to launch an asteroid-hunting space telescope named NEO Surveyor in 2026. “We’ve tracked lots of space rocks, especially the larger ones that could cause extinction-level events. Thankfully, none currently threatens Earth. But many asteroids the size of Dimorphos haven’t yet been discovered, and those could potentially take out a city if they came crashing down.” explains Lindley Johnson, NASA’s Planetary Defense Officer.

1. How did scientists know the craft hit the asteroid successfully?
A.The little spot on the screen suddenly disappeared.
B.The signal from the craft was lost as it hit the target.
C.They monitored the craft with satellites in space.
D.They recorded the whole process with a telescope.
2. What is the purpose of launching the spacecraft?
A.To save the world and deliver a drama.B.To search for evidence of alien life.
C.To test technology for defending Earth.D.To end the asteroid’s threat to Earth.
3. What can be inferred about Dimorphos?
A.It is expected to blow up after the impact.B.It may orbit the same asteroid after the hit.
C.It is an egg-shaped asteroid around Earth.D.It is a dangerous incoming space rock.
4. Which statement will Lindley Johnson probably agree with?
A.Larger asteroids will no longer threaten Earth.
B.NASA is responsible for the safety of Earth.
C.Asteroids are equally destructive whatever the size.
D.NEO Surveyor is aimed to track smaller asteroids.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文,介绍了危地马拉阿蒂特兰湖高地的圣卡塔琳娜帕洛波镇以及该镇的彩绘项目。

3 . Coming into the town of Santa Catarina Palopó, in the highlands of Lake Atitlan in Guatemala, the first thing you notice is the bright colors. Most of the buildings along the main street are eye-catching, deep blues and greens, dotted with red and yellow to form diverse patterns and designs.

Santa Catarina Palopó was once a sleepy town of 5, 000 people, most of them dependent on agricultural work. But as agriculture began to dry up here, poverty came. To deal with poverty and promote econ on growth through tourism, a small but creative group of laborers, artisans, domestic workers and stay-at-home moms created the Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó project.

The project aimed to paint all 850 homes and buildings in bright colors to change the hillside town into a work of art. “We wanted to paint the houses with colors and figures that represent the community” says the project’s executive director Stephany Blanco. “Families can choose designs for their house that are representative of the family.”

One of the most representative characteristics of the region is the blue huipil, a traditional blouse which has been worn commonly by local women since the 16th century. That deep sky blue was chosen the primary color-for the Pintando project, with secondary colors found in the sunsets and the nearby lake to make the design more attractive. Inspiration was also found in local culture, symbols such as volcanoes, flowers, and the national bird of Guatemala.

Each week, local artists, community members and tourists pick up paintbrushes to make buildings colorful. “At first, the idea of the project was uncertain, but now you can see a considerable difference in the town,” Melissa Whitbeck said. “The color of the buildings is believed to improve the quality-of life of the people. It uplifts the people’s mood and encourages them to be proud of their hometown.”

1. Why was the Pintando Santa Catarina project started?
A.Because of a workforce shortage.B.Due to the poor economic conditions.
C.Thanks to the increase in population.D.For the old-fashioned farming ways.
2. What is the project about?
A.Building family art galleries in Guatemala.B.Creating job opportunities for local artists.
C.Developing local tourism by selling artworks.D.Changing the town into a cultural destination.
3. What is the inspiration of the primary color for the project?
A.The surrounding volcanoes.B.Mayan-styled butterflies.
C.A type of traditional clothing.D.The national bird of Guatemala.
4. What is Melissa’s attitude towards the project?
A.Positive.B.Reserved.C.Concerned.D.Negative.

4 . Two very different movies were released on July 21 this summer in the West, bringing record numbers of people into cinemas as the “Barbenheimer (芭比海默)” trend took over social media.

Barbie and Oppenheimer have been huge hits around the world, with Barbie alone making over 1 billion US dollars just 17 days after release. This makes it Wamer Bros studio’s fastest movie to reach $1 billion and the film’s director, Greta Gerwig, the first-ever solo female filmmaker with a billion-dollar film.

Barbie and Oppenheimer are an interesting pair because of how different they are from one another. Barbie is about a famous toy coming to life and facing issues of sexism and finding her own identity. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer is a serious male-driven historical film about J. Robert Oppenheimer’s Manhattan Project and the development of the atomic bomb. The release of these two huge, wildly different movies on the same day led to the creation of countless memes (表情包) under the Barbenheimer hashtag. Filmgoers have even gone to see both movies one right after the other, with some dressing up in pink for Barbie going on to see Oppenheimer as well.

Meanwhile, people have found some of the “Barbenheimer” memes disturbing. Atomic bombs killed many people and they think the memes made light of a very dark time in history. But the films have brought a healthy boost to cinema ticket sales around the world, helping an industry that has faced many challenges in recent years. The increasing popularity of streaming services and the COVID-19 pandemic have kept people out of cinemas. Now, the strikes from writers and actors over concerns of pay and about the use of artificial intelligence by film studios are also having an impact. Add to that a public tired of yearly big movies about superheroes and fast cars, as declining ticket sales suggest.

Described as a historic moment for the movie industry. “‘Barbenheimer’ will go down as one of the biggest and unexpected milestones in the history of cinema,” Paul Dergarabedian at Comscore told CNN.

1. What made Barbie a significant achievement for Wamer Bros?
A.Representing male-driven films.B.Reaching $1 billion in record time.
C.Addressing issues about identity.D.Greta Gerwig becoming the director.
2. Why are Barbie and Oppenheimer described as an “interesting pair”?
A.They both feature female characters.B.They were released on the same day.
C.They have opposite disturbing memes.D.They explore completely different themes.
3. What is the impact of the releases of Barbic and Oppenheimer?
A.They have caused a decrease in streaming service.
B.They have stimulated cinema ticket sales globally.
C.They have motivated people to avoid the cinemas.
D.They have sparked controversy regarding sexism.
4. Which challenge has the film industry faced in recent times?
A.Increasing costs of film production.
B.Conflicts with social media platforms.
C.Filmgoers’ preference for superhero movies.
D.Disapproval from writers and actors over Al use.

5 . As to psychological well-being, the comfort zone is frequently perceived as a haven, a familiar location where individuals feel calm and peaceful. Pushing beyond this psychological state might have benefits.

The comfort zone can be understood as a behavioral metaphor. Within a comfort zone, an individual takes on a state of minimal anxiety without a perception of risk, responding predictably to deliver a consistent level of performance. These include behaviors that people do commonly, find relaxing, or that take them away from high-stress situations. Engaging in the same manner over time leads to a predictable and familiar zone of comfort. As creatures of habit, we become dependent on these routines that we know we can complete well to feel secure. However, by stepping outside of our comfort zone, we learn about our ability to handle new situations and control risks, leading to greater self-confidence, and lower levels of anxiety.

One study found that individuals who are more secure in stepping out of their comfort zone are more likely to be excited by and look forward to new experiences, feeling greater confidence in their ability to take them on.

One behavior that demonstrates the benefits of stepping out of a comfort zone is learning to play a musical instrument. When we consider actions outside of our comfort zone, we must assess our desire to engage in that activity. By weighing the pros and cons, we evaluate how uncomfortable a situation may seem, and whether the danger of entering such an unknown situation will be worth the risk.

Music offers a safe way to step out of your initial comfort zone because you can begin by practicing in an isolated setting, which offers a casual, safe way to build a new skill set. By picking up and practicing a new instrument, you have proven to yourself that you are capable of meeting an unfamiliar objective, thus decreasing anxiety.

1. What does the underlined word “haven” in Paragraph 1 most probably mean?
A.Habitat.B.Shelter.C.Community.D.Destination.
2. Which will not be considered when we step out of our comfort zone?
A.We recall the old experience.
B.We think whether it is worth the risk.
C.We evaluate our thirsty for the activity.
D.We weigh the strengths and weaknesses.
3. What will be probably discussed in the following paragraph?
A.The definition of the comfort zone.
B.The importance of psychological well-being.
C.The process of learning a new musical instrument.
D.The benefits of stepping out of one’s comfort zone.
4. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A.How to Identify Comfort Zone
B.Staying Inside Comfort Zone is Important
C.Stepping Outside Comfort Zone Promotes Learning
D.How to Take Yourself Away from High-stress Situations

2023 Gotham Award Nominee for Breakthrough Figure(Raven Jackson)

One of the most visually striking, profoundly moving American moviemaking debuts(首次亮相) in years, Raven Jackson’s All Dirt Roads Taste of Salt is an eye-catching immersion into a young woman’s inner world, filmed and edited with an extraordinary attention to the tiniest detail. This impressionistic journey skips ahead and back through decades to tell the story of Mack, whose upbringing in rural Mississippi is touched by grace, dotted with heartbreak, and always carried high in the sky by the surrounding natural beauty. As she ages, she loses loved ones and gains others, while making decisions that change the course of her life, and that of her beloved sister. Relying on sounds and images to tell her story, and employing minimal dialogue, Jackson has created something breathtakingly quiet and ultimately transporting a spiritual respect to the moments, feelings, and connections that make a life. An A24 release.

9 . A year back I received a full scholarship to attend the University of San Francisco. All of my hard work had paid off. My mom had spent a lot in my attending a private high school, so I made sure to push myself: I volunteered, joined different clubs, and graduated with honors.

I was so excited to start a new life. I had totally packed two weeks and wanted to go to college at once before it was time to leave.

Soon enough, the big day came, but it wasn’t like what I had thought. The first two weeks were the most difficult days of my entire life. Every night I would cry myself to sleep.

I was so homesick (想家) and I didn’t know how to deal with my broken heart. To distract myself, I threw myself into my studies and I applied for a lot of jobs. In any remaining free time, I started forcing myself to the gym. I wanted to keep every part of my day busy so I wouldn’t think how lonely I felt.

I quickly started recovery in my mind.

How could I do? I told myself that school was what I was best at. I decided to get rid of my homesickness and took exercise actively. My first term of college had passed by at last and I had gotten straight A’s. That’s why I want to share my story—to help other students feel less lonely.
