2 . The City of Toronto currently delivers three public art programs: the Public Art & Monuments Collection, the Percent for Public Art Program and StreetARToronto (StART). The programs have had a transformative effect on the city’s vitality, gathering a collection of public art that is of international significance.

Pubic Art & Monuments collection

The City commissions (委托制作) and accepts donations of high-quality public art works and monuments that are relevant to their prospective community, and enrich the urban experience of Toronto’s residents and visitors. These City-owned works of public art and historical monuments enhance public spaces all over Toronto.

The privately-owned art is intended to make building and open spares more attractive and interesting and to improve the quality of the pubic spaces. The Program requires that the artwork must be clearly visible at all   times from publicly accessible areas.

3 . What Does the Length of Your Fingers Say About You?

Are you the peace-loving type or the ambitious go-getter? Your finger length might be a clue. Take a look at your fingers. Would you believe me if I told you that the length of your fingers in relation to one another can predict your personality? I know that it sounds like one of those silly tests you see on Facebook, but I have to admit that it is exactly correct for me. Here's how it works.

Look at your three middle fingers of your hand. Is your   index   finger longer than your ring finger? Is your ring finger longer than your index finger? Or are the two of the same length? Find the situation that best matches your hand and see if what follows is an accurate   description of your personality.

●Longer ring finger: The Sweet Talker

If your ring finger is longer than your index finger, research shows that you're likely a charming type, and you can probably talk yourself out of any situation. Others often find this personality type irresistible and will go to great lengths to help you. You're more likely to take risks, and you're good at problem-solving. People in this category make great engineers, soldiers and crossword-puzzle solvers.

●Longer index finger: The (Over) Confident One

If your index finger is longer than your ring finger, chances are you are full of confidence—possibly even to the point of being over-confident and proud. You are not necessarily introverted(内向的),but you do enjoy time to yourself, especially when you're trying to complete a project. You are a dream pursuer who can make things happen, but you may be shy when it comes to taking the first step in a relationship. You are also probably happy with what you have, but you're always wishing for more.

●Index and ring finger are of the same length: The Peacemaker

If your index finger and ring finger are roughly of the same length, you are likely to avoid conflict at all costs and seek to keep the peace in your relationships. You are well-organized, faithful and sympathetic. But deep down under all of that caring and peace-loving, you also have a hot-tempered side that can appear unexpectedly when you're pushed too far. You will try your hardest to avoid a fight.

How well do these descriptions match your personality? I was surprised at the accuracy in     my case, but I'm not going to tell you which one it was!

1. Which of the following hand could be an engineer's hand?
A.B.
C.D.
2. What does the passage intend to tell us?
A.How accurate the description of the test is.
B.The length of fingers can reveal personality.
C.Why your fingers are not of the same length.
D.Personality is determined by your finger length.
3. Where can you probably find the text?
A.An official report.
B.A biology textbook.
C.A popular magazine.
D.A public advertisement.

4 . I just had a snowstorm that piled up eight inches of snow. It truly was a winter wonderland, and there was white beauty everywhere. Since I didn't have anything to do that day, I really enjoyed it.

But then the second snowstorm arrived that night, piling additional inches of snow on top of the snow banks that were already there. And then on the evening news, the weather cast gave us a notice that still another snowstorm was headed our way. Then I felt despondent. I had things to do and places to go. After days of being snowbound, I felt like I was under house arrest. I was stuck.

A place stuck isn't a fun place to be, whether it's from a snowstorm or from life circumstances such as a bad relationship, bills that seem to tower over our heads, or situations where we see no way out. All of us will feel stuck at one time or another, but it's how we respond that makes the difference.

I had a friend named Hannah. She was stuck in the heartbreaking world of infertility (不孕). She longed for a child more than anything. Instead of accepting defeat, she acted sincerely. Think about Nelson Mandela in a dark prison. It was a seemingly hopeless place, but instead of becoming depressed or bitter, he kept fighting for freedom. Yes, he kept fighting to get the success.

Circumstances cannot define us, but our reactions do. Each of those men and women learned important lessons in their "stuck" situations, and we can as well.

1. What does the underlined word" despondent" in paragraph 2 mean?
A.Unhappy.B.Unusual.C.Ambitious.D.Energetic.
2. What does the author intend to do in paragraph 3?
A.Summarize the previous paragraphs.
B.Provide some advice for the readers.
C.Introduce some background information.
D.Form a connecting link of the context.
3. Why does the author mention Hannah and Nelson Mandela?
A.To introduce two great celebrities.
B.To introduce the way to be famous.
C.To show their different circumstances.
D.To show how to respond to difficult situations.
4. What's the best title for the text?
A.Don't be defeated by failure
B.Don't be trapped by snow
C.Enjoy the white beauty
D.Keep calm in the winter

5 . The home of the future won't be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats just as we do today. But people will want to shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy "house kits" containing a basic house structure, with movable walls, doors and windows. They will put together the different parts to create the home they want.

Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still exist but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won't disappear because machines can't replace them. Teachers will still exist because students need human contact. But they will be using modem technology in class more and students will be working more at home. The medical technology revolution and space travel will create new jobs which we can only imagine today.

Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won't be for everyone because they won't be cheap. Short space trips will develop first; then space hotels will orbit the earth where it will be possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will have been holiday centres on the moon with leisure facilities(休闲设施)for families.

Paper won't exist in the future. Instead, there will be e-paper which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to save natural resources. E-newspapers and e-magazines will replace traditional newspapers and magazines and we will download information and news articles from the Internet every day onto our reusable paper.

The laws of physics tell us that the earth is going to disappear some time in the future. This isn't going to happen tomorrow but scientists predict that it will happen in five billion years when our sun explodes. We will have to explore the universe and find another home. At some point in the distant future, either we stay on the earth and die with it, or we leave and move to another planet. There won't be any other choice.

1. Homes of the future will         .
A.be completely different from those of today
B.be very similar to our homes
C.all be different from one another
D.be movable as you want
2. What does the second paragraph imply?
A.Skilled workers will face great challenges.
B.The future will witness job changes.
C.Technology will totally replace workforce.
D.An unimaginable life will come into being.
3. Space trips and staying in space hotels will          .
A.become a very common way to spend holidays
B.be the best holiday options for families
C.attract a lot of people
D.be still only for very rich people
4. E-paper will replace traditional paper because       .
A.it will be a symbol of fashion
B.it won't waste natural resource
C.it will be cheaper to produce
D.it will be convenient to carry

10 . Have you ever said to a friend “That rose’s smell is really sweet!”, only to find that your friend can’t smell anything at all?

According to a study published in the journal PNAS in May, people have different abilities to recognize certain odors (气味) — and it’s linked to different genes.

For the study, 300 people were placed among 150 jars with different odors. At a given time, they had to smell an odor and then rate the intensity (强度) and pleasantness of the odor on a scale from 1 (extremely weak/unpleasant) to 7 (extremely strong/pleasant). Before they left, the participants needed to leave a blood sample.

After comparing genes of the participants, researchers found all had different smelling abilities and that the differences between these abilities could be traced to certain genes.

According to The New York Times, human beings have nearly 400 genes that directly control receptors (器官) and influence the way these receptors become active.

“Odors ... turn on specific receptors, which then tells us if we’re smelling a flower, how strong we find it, and whether we like it,” said Casey Trimmer, a geneticist and the lead author of the study. “One small change in the gene for the receptor can change its shape and how well the odor fits, thereby changing the awareness of the odor.”

Though genes play a decisive role in our ability to smell, other factors, including attention, past associations and expectations, are important as well. For example, if we love the smell of roses, we are drawn to their smell and pay special attention to it.

But what does our different abilities to sense odors mean?

“Smelling is the most important sense for the rest of the animal kingdom,” said Trimmer. Although, unlike other animals, humans aren’t any longer dependent on their sense of smell to find food or detect danger, smell is still a significant sense. There is also evidence that a reduced sense of smell is an early symptom of Alzheimer’s disease.

1. What did the study find about smelling?
A.Men and women have different smelling abilities.
B.Differences between smelling abilities lie in genes.
C.People’s abilities to smell change over time.
D.Human beings can tell 150 odors apart.
2. What can we learn from Casey Trimmer’s words?
A.Our receptors won’t work when we smell an unpleasant smell.
B.People’s preferences for smells can affect their health.
C.Small changes in genes for smelling make a difference.
D.The sense of smell is the most important human sense.
3. Which might influence our smelling ability according to the text?
A.Past experiences.B.The environment.
C.Other senses.D.The cultural belief.
4. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A.Man has a better sense of smell than animals.
B.Man can use their sense of smell to detect danger.
C.The loss of smelling causes many health problems.
D.Poor smelling ability may be a signal of early disease.
