1 . Have you ever wondered if you see the same colours as other people? Most people know what blue is when they see it. They call it "blue” because they were taught the word and connected it with what they saw. But how do you know what you see as blue isn't someone else's red?

The ability to perceive (感知)different colours is up to receptors (接受器)in our eyes. Light waves hit these receptors and they react depending on which colour the light is, sending signals to the brain. The brain then reads these signals to determine which colour light the eyes are receiving.

Some people's receptors are more developed than others. The inability of the receptor to feel the light waves correctly means that some people cannot tell the differences between similar colours. Those with more developed receptors can see more colours. We sometimes hear people having an argument about whether something is dark blue or black. It might be because one person has stronger receptors to feel the light than another.

In the past, most scientists would argue that everyone saw colours in the same way. However, research was conducted on monkeys, in which their receptors were changed. This enabled them to see more colours than usual. Normally monkeys can only see blue and green, but the change allowed them to see red. Their brains automatically got used to new colours. This suggests that our brains may find new colors of the things we see. Colours could be a very personal experience , unique to everyone.

So, the next time you talk about your favourite colour, just remember if yours is blue and your friend says red, you two might actually be thinking about the same colour. What if everyone in the world has the same favourite colour, but just calls it different names?

5 . The home of the future won't be completely different and we will be living in houses and flats just as we do today. But people will want to shape their homes to match their dreams. No two homes will be the same. People will be able to buy "house kits" containing a basic house structure, with movable walls, doors and windows. They will put together the different parts to create the home they want.

Many jobs that we do today will disappear, others will still exist but will change and new jobs will be created. Skilled workers such as builders, gardeners and electricians won't disappear because machines can't replace them. Teachers will still exist because students need human contact. But they will be using modem technology in class more and students will be working more at home. The medical technology revolution and space travel will create new jobs which we can only imagine today.

Space holidays will develop in the future, but these holidays won't be for everyone because they won't be cheap. Short space trips will develop first; then space hotels will orbit the earth where it will be possible to have a longer vacation. By the end of the next century, there will have been holiday centres on the moon with leisure facilities(休闲设施)for families.

Paper won't exist in the future. Instead, there will be e-paper which people will be able to use over and over again. This will develop in order to save natural resources. E-newspapers and e-magazines will replace traditional newspapers and magazines and we will download information and news articles from the Internet every day onto our reusable paper.

The laws of physics tell us that the earth is going to disappear some time in the future. This isn't going to happen tomorrow but scientists predict that it will happen in five billion years when our sun explodes. We will have to explore the universe and find another home. 6 . A loud sound woke Dan at 8:15 in the morning. Looking out of his bedroom window, he spied a tree in smoke about 500 yards away. A car was stuck around the tree’s base, its engine on fire.

“I grabbed buckets of water.” Dan told the reporter. Then he and his girlfriend ran to the crash site. The car was divided nearly in two, and the tree was where the driver’s seat ought to have been, as if planted there. There was 16-year-old Thompson, his terrified face pressed against the driver’s side window, in great pain. Dan tried putting out the fire with his buckets of water with no success. “When the flames got into the front seats, I realized I had to get him out of there.” he told WAGM-TV.

“I feel like I just did what had to be done.” said Dan. Regardless of his own safety, Dan opened the car’s back door and crawled in. Thompson was struggling to get free. Dan said, “That’s when I noticed how bad his legs were.” Using a pocket knife, he cut off Thompson’s seat belt. Dan pulled him out of the window of the vehicle, and then dragged him to safety before the entire car was engulfed in flames. Although Thompson suffered serious injuries in his legs, he looked great, smiling. Dan thought about that day often. “There was a voice deep down telling me to act at once.” He said.

1. What do we know from the text?
