A doctor told me at a young age that I would likely never graduate from high school due to my severe hearing loss and my extremely slow speech development. I found the courage to work hard in school and be active in sports and other activities despite wearing hearing aids and living with a 70% hearing loss. By the time I was college-age, I started losing my night vision. I decided to go away to college 300 miles from home. I obtained my bachelor' s degree and graduated with honors. Even though I had terrible hearing loss and was beginning to lose my sight at night, I found the courage to begin a professional career.
After earning my MBA degree, I accepted a position with Kellogg in the Corporate Affairs Department. When I was working on my MBA degree, I found the courage to ask someone successful despite facing similar challenges to mentor（指导）me. He encouraged me to consider Kellogg as he knew the company was committed to diversity and inclusion（包容）. I nervously started my new career, because my vision loss had progressed significantly in the past few years. I am thankful to have a mentor that encouraged me and I am thankful I found the courage to apply for a position with Kellogg.
While Kellogg fosters a supportive, encouraging environment, it still takes courage for me to require what I need to make sure I am successful in my career. I need courage to speak up and ask for suitable accommodations to do my job. I also have to ask for assistance navigating through unfamiliar areas. I have found that everyone at Kellogg is always more than willing to take my requests into account.
Even though I face daily challenges, I have so much to be grateful for. We often face difficulties we cannot control, but we can be courageous in order to face adversity and address challenges.

A survey run by news portal Sina Technology showed that more than 60% of respondents think they look uglier through the face-scan payments method than on a regular camera. The number of women users, in particular, increased by 123 percent after this technique appeared.

When 800 new high schoolers graded their feelings of worry on a scale (量表) of one to ten, one quarter said seven or more, suggesting serious stress (压力). Parents are already struggling with over-scheduled kids, but the mental-health benefits of this particular after-school activity are widely recognized. “There’s clear evidence (证据) that doing something for others can help people manage stress,” Heath says. The biggest benefit is making new friends. High school is a social minefield (雷区). Teens struggling to find new friends can feel lonely.
They need a back-up social scene outside the classroom, Heath suggests. “Volunteering and getting involved gives a sense of community and belonging.” Team sports and some hobbies are social, but they can’t match the other benefits of volunteering. Serving food in a soup kitchen or chatting with lonely old people forces a teenager to focus on the needs of others, instead of thinking about their own worries.
We’ve found that, among youth who volunteer through our service programs, 61 percent report feeling increased self-respect. They’re 1.3 times more likely to have a strong sense of self than their peers (同龄人), and are more comfortable adapting to (适应) changes, according to an independent study by research firm Mission Measurement.
This winter, encourage the new high school student in your house to find a cause they’re interested in and get involved. It won’t help them find their locker, but it will ease the stress.

10 . In the aftermath of the deadliest fire California history last fall, it was difficult for anyone in the town of Paradise to find hope.
Shane Grammer paid close attention to the news of the fire’s deadly path. He felt quite powerless to help when seeing the picture shared by his childhood friend Shane Edwards in the town, in which Edwards photographed a white chimney, the only part of his house left after the fire.
“I’ve got to paint that chimney,” he said. “I’m not trying to say anything. It’s just that I’m an artist. And it was an opportunity for me to express myself and be an artist, wasn’t it?”
Grammer spent three hours spray-painting the image of a woman on the chimney in black and white, which was strikingly mysterious. Perhaps it served as a reminder of the hope of life or just life itself.
Then Grammer put its picture on social media. On seeing it, the victims of the fire could not contain themselves. “Beautiful and impressive,” one of them remarked. And another said, “You bring wonder and hope.”
At this time, Grammer became aware that something deeper had been transformed by a purely artistic expression. “When the first mural (壁画) moved so many people, I knew I had to come back,” he told the journalist. Grammer returned to Paradise eight times in three months, during which he completed 17 murals of victims and other figures, including the original one, on walls, pickups, and shards of buildings.
Today, Grammer’s efforts have developed into a movement. He has also painted murals in dark places around the world that seriously need some light.
Ironically, the first painting, on the chimney in Paradise, existed for just several months, since the bulldozer (推土机) was a merciless art critic. But Grammer couldn’t be more pleased about it, which means the spirit of Paradise is rising again.
