2 . A few months ago, Jason asked his parents to buy him a computer. All his friends already had one, so his mom and dad agreed. During the first few weeks, Jason spent a lot of time in front of his computer because he had to learn how it worked. He was really interested in learning all about it and he even started writing computer programs himself.

One day Jason found a website where he could play chess either against the computer or against other people from all over the world. From then on, Jason seemed to have just one interest in life, his computer. Whenever his parents told him that he was spending too much time with his computer, Jason went into denial. He did not think that he had a problem at all.

Then the unthinkable happened: Jason's computer broke down. But his parents decided not to buy him a new one. Jason said that he needed a computer for school, and he promised that he'd spend less time with it. But his parents refused to give in. Finally, Jason felt so hopeless that he took the only way out and killed himself.

Robert Johnson, a psychologist (心理学家) on the subject, says, "Computer addiction is an illness that can influence anyone of us. Nowadays, increasing numbers of people are spending more and more time working with computers. While this isn't a problem for most users, some people, especially teenagers, often use the computer to get away from the real world. This is especially true of shy people. For them, meeting people online is a way of hiding their true selves. In cyberspace (网络空间), they can be whoever they want to be and create their own virtual (虚拟的) world. But what happens when they can no longer enter their virtual world?"

They become popular for their videos online and then they are discovered by talent agents and gradually cause huge storms in the musical circle. Troye Sivan, a singer who is nicknamed “chuoye”, became popular on YouTube from an early age.

As a popular video sharing website, YouTube has given rise to plenty of stars, creating a new celebrity culture. Sivan has been making YouTube videos since he was 12 to show his singing talent. In the digital age, Sivan has already developed large devoted audience online and his touching video blogs have earned him extreme popularity.

A survey has showed that US teenagers are more attracted to YouTube stars, which is a surprising result. YouTube stars are judged to be more attractive, outstanding and related than traditional stars. Looking at the survey comments and feedback, teens enjoy a close and real experience with YouTube celebrities, who aren't carefully directed by design. Teens also say they appreciate YouTube stars, sense of humor and risk-taking spirit, which are often limited by Hollywood stars. 4 . Dogs have complex emotions such as jealousy (嫉妒) and pride, according to a scientific research that throws new light on their relations with humans.

Animal psychologists previously believed most animals lacked the “sense of self”, which is needed to experience secondary emotions such as jealousy, embarrassment or guilt. These emotions are more complex than instant reactions such as anger or joy.

Professor Friederike Range, from the University of Vienna, has shown that dogs are jealous when they feel unfairly treated compared with other dogs. “Dogs show a strong reaction to inequity (不公平),” she said. “If one dog gets something, you’d better believe another will demand something as well.”

But, her study points out that it doesn’t matter if one gets a better treat and only that the distribution is fair.

The dog study is the latest into several species, including cows, horses, cats and sheep, which have shown that animals are far more self-aware than they were thought. Paul Morris, a psychologist at the University of Portsmouth who studies animal emotions, told The Sunday Times, “We are learning that dogs and horses are far more emotionally complex than we ever realized. They can suffer simple forms of many feelings we once thought only primates (灵长类) could experience.”

In research among dog owners, Morris found almost all of them reported jealous behavior by their pets. The dog often tried to get their owner away from a new lover in the early days of a relationship.

Behavior experts suggest owners keep their dogs away as much as possible from a new partner or child. This helps to prevent jealous activity of the dog such as interruptions with barking or whining (哀号).

7 . We all know cameras. But have you heard of Google’s new camera? It is a small, smart device, called Clips. It comes with a case that has a clip, but it’s not designed to be worn on your clothing. Most interestingly, it uses artificial intelligence to take photography out of your hands so it can capture moments on its own.

This roughly 2-inch by 2-inch camera, with a three-hour battery life and Gorilla Glass for toughness, is intended for candid moments, like when a child does something cute that may happen too quickly for you to pull out your smart phone.

Onboard the Clips device, it uses machine learning algorithms to help capture scenes. Those algorithms include face recognition. “Once it learns that there’s a face you see frequently, it’ll try to get nice photos of those faces,” said Juston Payne, the device’s product manager. And they also want it to recognize facial expressions, which involved “training it to know what happiness looks like”. The Google team also trained it to recognize what not to shoot—like when a child’s hand is over the lens, or if it is tossed in a dark purse.

The only way to see the images is by connecting the camera with your phone, as it has no screen for viewing or editing.

Did people think it was strange? Yes, Payne admitted. But they said they addressed that by making it obvious what it is. A green light on the front signals that the device is on. Besides, unlike a camera meant to monitor your home, it is not connected to the Internet.

“This product is only possible because of the way that technology has advanced,” Payne said. It was only in the past year or so that they could squeeze the technology down into a device this size. Going forward, we’re likely to get more assistance from the artificial intelligence packed into our apps and gadgets.

1. What does the underlined word “candid” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.TouchingB.Brief.C.UnforgettableD.Embarrassing.
2. What is the most outstanding feature of Clips?
A.It is equipped with tough glassB.It enables easy Internet access.
C.It can be worn on your clothingD.It allows of hands-free photography.
3. What makes Clips a reality according to Juston Payne?
A.The popularity of the InternetB.The rise of the smart phone industry.
C.The advance in technologyD.The reduction in the price of lens.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.A New Digital Camera from GoogleB.New Gadgets in the Age of Apps
C.Artificial Intelligence in Everyday LifeD.An Alternative Way to Photograph

8 . We recognize our friends’ faces. And we’re not alone. Many social animals can identify individuals of their own species by features of their faces. That's important, because they need to be able to change their behavior depending on who they meet. And a recent research has shown that some species of monkeys, birds, and domesticated (家养的) animals can even tell different faces apart by looking at photographs alone.

Ethologist Léa Lansade of the French National Research Institute for Agriculture, Food and Environment did an experiment to find out how well horses can recognize individual people in photographs.

She and her team first taught the horses how to “choose” between two side-by-side pictures by touching their noses to a computer screen. The horses were then shown photos of their present keeper alongside faces of unfamiliar humans. They had never seen photos of any of the people before. The horses correctly identified their current keeper and ignored (忽视) the stranger’s face about 75%of the time. In fact, even though the horses didn't get it right every single time, they were at least as correct in picking out their earlier keeper as they were at identifying their present one.

The results suggest that not only can horses differentiate between familiar and unfamiliar human faces, they also naturally understand that photographs are two dimensional representations (二维呈现) of real life, without any other intimations such as smell or sound. And they’re even better at this than our oldest animal parter, the domestic dog.

In addition, horses seem to have a strong long-term memory for human faces, like their long lifespan and history of domestication. In future experiments, the researchers would like to test whether looking at photos of people that they have had bad experiences with in the past might cause horses to act anxious or even avoidance. So maybe think twice before doing anything that might give a horse a long face.

1. Why did researchers show the horses both the keeper’s photos and the strangers’?
A.To find out what horses would do in the experiment.
B.To see why horses could recognize the keeper in the pictures.
C.To test whether horses could recognize the strangers in pictures.
D.To study to what degree horses can make out different people in pictures.
2. What does the underlined word “intimations” in paragraph 4 refer to?
A.Clues.B.Differences.
C.Photographs.D.Senses.
3. What are researchers still uncertain about?
A.Whether horses can live longer than other animals.
B.Whether horses can remember human's faces for a long time.
C.Whether horses can show their emotions at the sight of photos.
D.Whether horses are better at recognizing photos than other animals.
4. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To talk about animals’ species.
B.To explain animals’ facial features.
C.To show animals’ behaviour for adaptation.
D.To introduce animals’ ability to identifying faces.

9 . Kyle Cassidy and three other members of the Annenberg Running Group were stretching on the grounds of the University of Pennsylvania, waiting for a few slow members to start. The Penn colleagues and other community members meet three days a week for a roughly 30-minute jog and an occasional lecture. It's not your normal exercise chatter—during some runs, one of them delivers a talk; the topics range from the brain to Bitcoin(比特币).

But on this day last January, it would not be their normal run. The first sign was the man who ran past them very fast. "Probably running a 7:15 pace(per mile)," Cassidy thought admiringly.

Cassidy discovered why the man was so fast at running when another man ran by, yelling "Help! He took my phone!"

Hearing that, the group did what running clubs do: They ran, chasing the suspect down the streets until he quickly hid in a construction site. The runners split up. Cassidy ran around to the far side of the site to cut the thief off while the others wandered the neighborhood hoping he had abandoned the stolen phone in a backyard.

No luck. Then they asked the residents whether they'd seen the guy. When they knocked on the door of one house, they were in for a surprise. They didn't know the thief had already come out of the construction site and was hiding behind a bush by that very house. As the owner opened the door, the suspect suddenly rushed out from behind the bush and right into the arms of the campus police, who had joined the chase shortly behind the runners.

The members of this running group are not passionate(狂热的)runners. But they do understand the benefit of a little exercise. "Running is typically a useless sport where you turn fat cells into heat," Cassidy said. "But occasionally it can be useful, and here was one of those opportunities."

1. What does the running group do at times while exercising?
A.Share ideas.B.Talk nonsense.
C.Help search for lost things.D.Play with their smartphones.
2. How did Cassidy feel right after the thief ran past him?
A.ConfusedB.FrightenedC.MotivatedD.Impressed
3. What does the underlined phrase "split up" refer to?
A.gave up.B.stayed up.C.got separatedD.ran away.
4. What message can we get from the story?
A.It's very important to keep fit.
B.Exercising can be socially beneficial.
C.Whatever you do, you should do your best.
D.Teamwork is more important than individual skills.

10 . A while back I caught a news report on something called couchsurfing and the net work of trusting souls who make this phenomenon possible. They offer to put up(留宿) travelers free of charge and help them on their ways. At first, it sounded unbelievable. I mean, inviting strangers into one's home for one or two nights? Give me a break.

However, I was intrigued. I decided to investigate(调查). The only way to truly learn about this phenomenon was to dive in. So I planned a trip to Finland, a country I' ve always wanted to explore. I would couchsurf at every stop there.

If ever any anxiety existed when stepping into the unknown, it disappeared when my first host met me at the train station. Ari looked like my idea of a typical Finn: tall and blue-eyed. Finns were also supposed to be famously reserved((寡言少语的). Ari was anything but. He was a live wire, giving me an enthusiastic welcome and hiking with me to his apartment, where he showed me the sleeping sofa, served me tea and engaged me in warm conversations. He also handed me a key to come and go as I pleased.

If this was what couchsurfing was all about-trust and friendship- then I had gotten off to a good start. As I boarded my next train to continue my journey I began to think about this couchsurfing idea. What urged these people to open their homes to strangers? I concluded that there was a desire to lend a hand to like-minded folks who might enrich their own lives.

Seven cities in 14 days. Seven hosts. Seven new friends. If couchsurfing taught me anything, it's this: Most people are good and generous. Where will couchsurfing take me next? Who knows? But I can't wait to find out.

1. What does the underlined word in the second paragraph mean?
A.RelaxedB.Disgusted
C.InterestedD.Embarrassed
2. What can we know about Ari?
A.He was reserved like most FinnsB.He talked less but he was friendly.
C.He treated the author as a friendD.He saw off the author at the train station
3. Why did people offer couchsurfing to strangers?
A.To take an adventure with strangers
B.To exchange houses for a short time.
C.To learn more about others' family lives.
D.To enrich their own lives by helping others.
4. What can be the suitable title for the text?
A.Travel on Trust and CouchesB.A Free Travel in Finland
C.Experiences in Strangers' Houses.D.A Plan for Couchsurfing
