1 . What if your parents are too busy to cook dinner, so they give you a bag of candy…?
That’s exactly what some parents did in the 1920s in America. Back then, stores sold more kinds of candy than they do now. Most people thought it was as good for them as a healthy dinner. Many scientists also thought candy was good for people’s health.
Now, of course, we know that sugar isn’t good for us. But could it really be that bad if it tastes so delicious? Sadly, yes.
“Everyone loves sugar,” says Dr. Robert Lusting, a sugar expert. “But sugar has a dark side.” Take breakfast, for example. Sugary cereal (谷类植物) gives you energy, but only for a short time. Then you start to feel sleepy. Foods like oatmcal (麦片) and fruit give your body energy for hours. And eating a lot of sugar can cause health problems, including serious illnesses. These days, more and more children are getting illnesses caused by eating too much sugar.
The good news is that changing your diet can help—and fast. Lusting recently did a study that helped overweight children eat less sugar. All of the children who cut out sugar had fewer health problems in just 10 days.
Knowing the risks of eating too much sugar can help you make healthy food choices. Does this mean you have to give up sugar completely? No. It just means you should make sure you are eating plenty of healthy foods, like fresh fruit and vegetables. Most of us can eat candy sometimes, but just make sure it’s not your dinner.

2 . Jack worked for the Canadian government. One day, he was told to learn more about wolves. Do wolves kill lots of caribou (北美驯鹿)? Do they kill people?
The government gave Jack lots of food, clothes and guns. Then they put him on a plane and took him to a lonely place. The plane landed, put him down and left. There were no houses or people in this place. But there were lots of wolves.
People tell horrible stories about wolves. They say wolves like to kill and eat people. Jack was afraid when he thought of these stories. He always took his gun with him.
Then one day, he saw a group of wolves. There was a mother wolf with four baby wolves. A father wolf and another young wolf lived with them.
Jack watched these wolves every day. The mother was a very good mother. She gave milk to her babies. She gave them lessons about life. They learned how to catch food. The father wolf got food for the mother. The young wolf played with the children. They were a nice and happy wolf family. Jack did not need his gun any more. In a short time, he got along well with the family. Jack watched them for five months.
Later, Jack wrote a book about wolves. He wanted people to understand them and not to kill them.

3 . Having friends may well keep you healthier and help you deal with stress better. Some studies show that people with close friends have a greater ability to fight disease than people who are alone.
Make friendship a priority(优先). Find the time to be with friends even if it means letting the lawn go unmowed(未割草) or the dishes unwashed for a while. When you can’ t get together, use the phone to keep in touch.
Open up to close friends. Maintaining a deep friendship requires a level of heartfelt intimacy(亲密). Don’t be afraid to express your inner fears and disappointments. Listen to your friends when they have problem, but offer advice only when it’s wanted. Help raise friends’ self-esteem when they are shaken by a job loss, or other such events.
Have different friends for different activities, such as going to the movies, singing in a choir(合唱), and joining in a bowling league.
Don’t wait for a friend to ask a favor. When a friend has the flu, offer to go to the store or drive his or her children to their after-school activities.
Never take a friendship for granted. Like a good marriage, friendship needs care and patience. Become a joiner. Find a group that matches your interests.
Talk to strangers. Conversations started in museums, laundry rooms, or bookstores can lead to firm friendship.
Enroll in an adult-education course. A classroom is an ideal place to meet others with similar interests.
