文章大意:这是一篇说明文。文章主要介绍关于OPT(可选实践培训)的一些事实。

1 . Quick facts about OPT

Year after year, international students from around the world come to the US in pursuit of one of the best educational offers in the world.     1     But for others the goal is to work in the US after graduation.

What is OPT?

2     Every international student in the US entitled (使有权利) to 12 months of practical training (i.e. work) in the US under OPT. Typically, if you are not a citizen of a particular country, then you are not allowed to work in that country without proper documents. Similarly, as an international student in the US without proper documents, OPT is one that allows you to do so.

It is also important to note that students studying in the STEM fields get a 24-month extension in addition to the normal 12 months for a total of 36 months.

    3

However, OPT only gives international students 12 months of employment. In the long run, foreigners would seek an H1-B visa in order to work in the US for the long term.     4     You will first need to find an company that would like to sponsor (赞助) you for your H1-B visa. This means that you have to apply for jobs, and on top of that, you have to make sure that if you accept a job offer, that company will want to pay the additional fee to sponsor you.

Why not go straight for an H1-B after graduation?

As stated previously, a company is required to sponsor you in order for you to be eligible (合格的) for an H1-B visa. This means that if you break the law, then the company sponsoring you will share responsibility in one way or another. Some companies might view sponsoring an international student as a legal responsibility.     5     If your goal really is to work in the US in the long run, then the OPT gives you a period of time to prove yourself to the company you’d like to work for.

A.They wish to give others a hand.
B.How can you apply for a suitable college?
C.Thus they may not want to go that extra mile.
D.OPT simply stands for Optional Practical Training.
E.What if you want to work in the US for longer than that?
F.Many students plan to make use of their degrees back home.
G.Similar to applying for universities, there are requirements to apply for an H1-B visa.

文章大意:本文为一篇说明文。文章说明了选择正确的职业并不像看起来那么简单,而高中是制定正确职业规划的最佳时机,因此高中生应该尽早作出正确的职业规划。

5 . Selecting the right career is not as simple as it looks. Mainly in high school, most of the students are focused on finding the best college without even thinking about where they will land after completing college.

1     It is one of the common questions every student comes across in the early days. Most of the students answer based on what they have learned about a career from their teachers or parents or elders. Besides, there are students who make up answers or are totally unaware of what they want to achieve.

There are different surveys around the states. 52% of the students find the right career option only after joining college graduation or at the end of the college graduation.     2     High school is the best time to make the right career plan. Depending on the plan, high schoolers can join the right course, get the right training, and build the tight skills. All of these can lead them to the right career path.     3

Before high schoolers find the right path, they can learn and explore different career options. Most of the time students change their minds multiple times after they are introduced to a new career option. They are also likely to switch as they start finding different career options related to their interest.     4     You can explore different occupations, learn various things about different sectors, and many more. During that stage, students are more curious about learning new things.     5     And investigating different occupations and sectors encourages them to become more curious about their future goals.

文章大意:这是一篇说明文。介绍了在求职过程中7个脱颖而出的方法。

6 . 7 ways to stand out from the crowd

In many industries and professions, competition for jobs continues to intensify.     1    . But chances are, so will several other candidates. Here are some ideas, based on true stories, about how to stand out from the crowd?

Add a personal touch.

Reaching out to your potential employer following an interview, especially if it’s in a thoughtful way, will help you to be the candidate that leaves a lasting impression.     2     .

It’s an old-fashioned courtesy which, done well, is likely to gain approval.     3     . Referencing parts of the conversation also shows you were fully engaged throughout the process.

Do your research.

How do you answer the question “What do you know about us”? It’s boring if you just recite the About Us page. Read the annual report instead. That way you get a feel for the type of language the company uses and you're already tapping into their DNA.

The annual report helps candidates to understand what really matters to the organisation.

4    . And then you can play those back at interview.

    5

A related soft skill that can help you stand out from the crowd is “learning agility”—a willingness and enthusiasm to move with the times, take on new skills and expand into new areas as business requirements and priorities evolve. What we learn at school often doesn’t equip us with the tools for the jobs of tomorrow, so you need to be able to demonstrate evidence of your willingness and ability to learn new skills, and adapt or take on new challenges and working patterns.

A.Demonstrate a growth mindset
B.Show some courage and ability to bounce back quickly
C.Sure, you may tick all the right boxes in terms of qualifications
D.Candidates can stand out to a company by asking bold questions
E.A simple way to do this is to compose a handwritten thank you note
F.Get a good idea of the keywords that characterise the company’s approach
G.Better still, it gives you another chance to get your name in front of your potential employer

8 . A career aptitude (能力、倾向) test is often used to help those interested in entering the work force.     1    . These tests can help evaluate how a person thinks and best understand what areas of interest a person may want to go after.

2    . They will typically consist of a number of questions phrased as multiple-choice or true/false questions. These are often used so that the results of the test can be determined through computer analysis of answers. Take 123 Career Test for an example. 123 Career Test is a five-to-ten minute assessment of your career personality. You look at pictures of people who are doing work-related task, and choose “yes” or “no” in regard to whether you could see yourself enjoying that task.     3    , the computer will soon tell you what work environments and occupations best suit your career personality.

123 Career Test shows how wonderful career aptitude test can be. You may now be eager to try one.     4    .

Some career aptitude tests may only focus on analyzing the types of skills or strengths and weaknesses a person may have. The results of such tests may not always match what a person wants to do. Someone could be very strong at critical thinking and analysis, which may indicate he or she has an aptitude for becoming a scientist. If that person has no particular interest in science, however, then the results of such a test would not necessarily indicate what career he or she should pursue.     5    .

9 . When you are looking for a new job, you'll probably get a lot of advice from the Internet and well-meaning friends.     1     Some of it may even hurt your chances. We've clarified a few of the most common misbeliefs about job hunting so you can find your new position quickly without lowering your standards.

2     Having a college degree shows that you put in hard work and effort, but it doesn't lock you into one specific career. If you take a completely different career path, consider getting experience in your new field of choice with an internship (实习) or vocational classes.

You don't need to be perfect to apply. If you meet some of the requirements that the job asks for, take a chance? It's pretty rare for a company to find someone who meets all the requirements. Of course, there are some things that companies won't bend on, or give in, like experience or skills.     3

Temporary jobs don't necessarily mean dead-ends.     4     Usually, companies are cautious about hiring new people, so they use temporary jobs to test the waters first. If you come across a suitable temporary job, consider applying to get your foot in the door.

Your personality is no less important than your qualification. You may have gone to a top school and have years of experience.     5     Do your best to make a good impression by being polite and kind during your interview.

A.However, it never hurts to try.
B.Some may turn into long-term or full-time work.
C.Your college degree determines your career path.
D.You don't have to work in the field your degree is in.
E.While the advice can sometimes be helpful, a lot of it is contradictory.
F.Therefore, they will save companies the trouble of training new employees.
G.But, if your attitude doesn't match the company culture, you won't be employed.
