4 . The Rise of the Grown-Up Gap Year

It was 2012,Tim Potter, who was in public relations, had just finished working on the London Olympics alongside his partner.A career break to go travelling — or a “grown-up gap year”— seemed like a natural thing to both of them.

The couple spent four months traveling around Asia. Next, they flew to Mexico via Canada, worked their way down through Central America, and spent a month in both Colombia and Brazil.

1     Within three weeks of his return, he was in another job (he’d interviewed for it in a phone booth in Colombia). Today, he’s managing director of the marketing agency Hunt & Gather.

But is Potter’s experience common or did he get lucky? Some people assume taking a career break will automatically be off-putting to potential employers, but according to Emily Bain, managing director of secretarial recruitment agency Bain and Gray, it can actually be quite the opposite.

“As an employer, I see it as a positive,” she says.     2     In fact, it’s been an upward trend that’s been steadily growing since the 2008 recession (经济衰退). “People couldn’t get work so they just took off” she says.

Tim Fryer, U.K. manager at STA Travel, says grown-up gap years can have a positive effect on your career. “Taking a break gives travelers time to refocus on work as well as the space to reflect on what exactly it is they want to do,” he explains.

3     For many, recovering from illness, the loss of a love one or something like divorce can be the trigger (诱因). And some simply have an ambition to see a certain place — or places — by a certain age.

Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, though. Emily Bain admits that some employers’ instinct is to turn their noses up at someone who’s had a break. However, she says, the duty is on the traveler to sell their experience as something that will benefit their future employer. “You have to explain the whole picture,” she says. “Making your CV (简历) gap accountable actually brings your profile to life.” So, don’t hide it — make a big deal of it.

Bain holds that although gap years are acceptable, it is still important to learn some kind of skill regardless of whatever else you may be doing during this time.     4     But it doesn’t have to be academic. “I had a client who learned a special kind of weaving in India, and that to me is really interesting. It became a real talking point.”

A.These people are often at a turning point in their careers or lives.
B.The desire to go travelling is by no means all work-related, though.
C.The most obvious skill to take from travel, of course, is a language.
D.Taking a gap year when you’re older means that you have different things to consider.
E.Not in any way did the lack of work affect his prospects.
F.Bain goes on to say that taking a grown-up gap year is more common than you’d think.

5 . In the fall of 2017, when Paula Aldridge needed to get a job, she found herself at a crossroads. The 50-year-old wasn’t sure she would ever work again, due to health issues.

But Aldridge’s life and career journey started to turn around after she connected with Goodwill of Central Iowa’s skills (技能) training programs. These programs aim to help people develop the specific, real-world skills they need to get and keep a job, through a combination of detailed teaching and hands-on experience.

When Aldridge first connected with Goodwill in September 2017, she was having trouble finding a job. Transportation was challenging, as she didn’t have a driver’s license or own a car. Aldridge also had a limited work history with long employment gaps (间断) , meaning she missed the chances to learn important skills, such as working a credit card machine. Besides, her physical health issues were also a problem.

According to Kayleigh Duff, a career specialist at Goodwill of Central Iowa, the biggest difficulty Aldridge had to overcome was from within. “She said outwardly that she had all of this confidence and that she knew how strong a worker she was, but I don’t think she truly believed it herself.”

Thankfully, many people offer Aldridge encouragement and guidance. She first started off in the food service training program but was eager to enter the retail (零售) skills program, since she had worked at the Salvation Army and Subway before. When Aldridge mentioned her interest in retail, Duff recognized that her go-getting attitude would be perfect for the program.

The seven-week retail skills training is a systematic program combining classroom teaching with on- the-job experience at a Goodwill store. As Aldridge graduated from the program, she became more confident in her abilities.

Duff said it was great to see how Aldridge grew into the devoted worker she is today. “She has this strong desire, this longing to succeed. And she knows that she’s able to do that, although she has fallen short in the past.”

1. What can be learned about Goodwill’s training programs?
A.They combine theory with practice.
B.They will surely find a good job for people in the program.
C.They are designed mainly for the unemployed.
D.They were set up in the autumn of 2017.
2. What was the biggest problem Aldridge faced according to Duff?
A.Poor health.
B.Poor working skills.

3. Why did Aldridge change her training program?
A.She wanted to attend a more systematic program.
B.She wanted to get some hands-on experience.
C.She was more interested in retail.
D.She followed Duff’s advice.
4. What’s the main idea of the text?
A.A 50-year-old devotes herself to Goodwill.
B.Goodwill helps a 50-year-old turn her life around.
C.Goodwill training programs spring up around the world.
D.Success is closely connected to good training programs.

8 . In the past three years, according to a study, the number of people who study part- time in England has decreased by 42%—the equivalent (等同的)of 106,000 fewer students. Almost half a million students were studying part-time in the past three years, with most of them working at the same time and studying vocational subjects, according to Universities UK(UUK), which conducted the research. The report, which was requested by ministers, said, ''There seems to be many factors responsible for it: the current economic climate limiting employer support for further study and putting pressure on household budgets, changing pathways to higher education and the current changes to the funding system in England and associated increase in tuition fees. Factors such as the rise of apprenticeships(学徒制),increase in private providers (whether for profit or not for profit), and a shift to online learning also have an impact. ''

Professor Sir Eric Thomas, chairman of the review and vice-president of Bristol University, said, ''The reality is that the UK needs more graduates and relies heavily on part-time higher education to meet these fast changing skill needs in a fast changing world. We ignore part-time study's transformative power for individuals and society. While part-time students are a great success story for the UK, something is going wrong. In England in particular, numbers are reducing and do not look like recovering. The situation is highly complex. This review is the beginning of a process of universities working together and with partners to take steps in dealing with this issue. We cannot and must not give up on these students. ''

Rachel Wenstone, vice-president for higher education at the National Union of Students (NUS), said, ''NUS welcomes this report and we are pleased that this issue is getting the attention it deserves. It is incredibly disheartening to see the number of part- time students decreasing. The sector took responsibility in analyzing the issues facing part-time students and it's now time for the sector to take responsibility for dealing with the problems. ''

The university's minister, David Willetts, said, Part-time study brings enormous benefits to individuals, the economy and employers. Tuition fee loans are now available to new part-time students. We will also change the rules which stop people from getting financial support to learn new skills in engineering, technology and computer science part-time. This will make sure that the nation has the skills we need to keep our businesses ahead in the global race. Institutions must also play their part to encourage more part-time study by emphasizing the benefits to future students. I am calling on all universities to make sure that part-time options are highly visible on websites and detailed information about the courses is also up to date.

1. Which of the following is NOT the reason for the decline of the number of part- time students in the UK?
A.The tuition fees have been increased.
B.Many people choose to learn on the Internet.
C.People are too busy with their work and daily lives.
D.Families are short of money to let their members study further.
2. What does Eric Thomas really want to express in Paragraph 2?
A.Part-time higher education is very important in the UK.
B.More graduates in the UK have to improve their skills.
C.Part-time students have been very successful in the UK.
D.Universities in the UK play a key role in attracting part-time students.
3. How does Wenstone feel about the present part-time study in the UK?
A.Puzzled.B.Satisfied.
C.Optimistic.D.Discouraged.
4. Which of the following can be the best title for the passage?
A.The UK sees the decline of its part-time students
B.Part-time students receive more attention nowadays
C.The UK comes up with ways to attract more part-time students
D.The decline of part-time students has effects on the UK

10 . Teenagers in the US know they’ll probably need tech skills to land good jobs, but a new survey suggests that interest in tech careers may be decreasing (减少).

The percentage of boys aged 13 to 17 who are interested in science, technology, engineering (工程) and math – or STEM – careers dropped from 36 percent in 2017 to 24 percent this year, according to a survey by Junior Achievement USA. The amount of girls interested in STEM careers stayed unchanged at 11 percent.

But the 1,000 survey participants still named technology as one of two key skills that will be necessary to prepare them for their future careers.

“Kids don’t understand how technology can be applied to careers outside of computers, coding (编码) and maybe robotics (机器人学),” said Tammera L. Holmes, president of aviation consulting firm AeroStar Consulting. “That’s all they know, so they can’t really translate that interest to career pathways (职业道路).”

When Holmes was in high school, her mom sent her to an event that featured (以……为专题) the Tuskegee Airmen, famous military (军事的) pilots from World War II. One of the pilots took her for a ride and let her take the wheel. “I was 16 years old, flying over Lake Michigan, facing down the skyline, and I knew immediately that was the career for me,” she said.

Women remain outnumbered by men in fields like technology. For people working to increase the number of women in these areas, the lack of growth in girls’ interest in STEM careers is concerning.

Teenage girls are more interested than their male classmates in pursuing (追求) careers in which they can help others, said Ed Grocholski from Junior Achievement. Even with all the programs aimed at increasing girls’ interest in STEM, “I don’t think we really talk that much about how we improve people’s lives through STEM,” Grocholski said.

Society needs to do better at making those connections for kids, said Katherine Latham, founder of an engineering firm. She used civil engineering (土木工程) as an example of a career that will continue to be crucial.

However, the fact that students know they will need tech skills in their future careers is encouraging. The second skill they said they need? Relationship-building.

“That’s going to be the new breed (类型) of engineers,” Latham said.

1. What is the reason behind kids’ falling interest in tech careers?
A.They find tech careers too boring.
B.They find tech skills are less important than before.
C.They can’t connect their tech interest to future careers.
D.They don’t think tech careers are rewarding enough.
2. What started Holmes’ interest in her current career?
A.A documentary about the life of pilots.
B.A summer camp for trainee pilots.
C.Her parents’ wish for her to become a pilot.
D.Her flight experience with a pilot.
3. According to Grocholski, teenage girls are more interested in careers that ______.
A.can improve people’s lives.
B.will make them look beautiful.
C.are different from those of their parents.
D.can socialize more with other people.
4. What is the article mainly about?
A.The popularity of tech careers among kids and its reasons.
B.Reasons behind the change of kids’ interest in tech careers.
C.The different careers boys and girls in the US will pursue.
D.Some examples of kids pursuing tech careers successfully.
