1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

My parents would not let me go to school that morning. “Why not?” I argued. “I have exams. I have work in Spanish class that I can’t miss!” My mother gave me a sad look. “You have to get a checkup (身体检查),” she explained. I screamed, “NO!” My father pulled me over to the couch. “Alison,” my father said in a tone that was quiet but powerful. “You’re in the state of malnutrition (营养不良). And you know that. You can have all in the world, but if you don’t have your health, you have nothing.” For some reason, I believed him. I hadn’t wanted it to be this way.

I was a girl who didn’t like doing sports but was fond of snack food. I weighed 50kg at my age of 14. Most of the time, I avoided parties with my friends, afraid of how ugly they would think I looked. One day, I found a slim girl on TV was so attractive that I wanted to look like her. I forced myself to do exercise and started going on a diet for a good-looking body shape. During the summer, I did weekly weigh-ins (称重) and kept a strict diet. I memorized the calories of almost everything that I may eat. My only goal was to lose weight. Later, when it became too cold to run outside, I restricted my calories even more to make up for not being able to burn them.

Gradually I lost my weight a lot. But things turned out to be worse. My hands were especially dry, peeling and wrinkled. My sister called them old people’s hands. Once, I went shopping with my mom. While we waited in line to pay for our items, I felt I was going to faint (昏厥). I felt dizzy and standing was getting harder and harder.

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章为我们解释了为什么减肥难的问题。

2 . Why It’s Hard to Lose Weight

What makes people gain weight? This seems like a simple enough question to answer. If we eat a lot and don’t do enough exercise, we will become fat.     1

As we know, what we eat greatly affects our weight. It is widely accepted that people have 100% control over what they eat and how much they eat. This, however, is partly true.     2     You may rarely touch vegetables while overeating fried chicken. Meanwhile, the serving size and the background music can both affect how much we eat.

Our bodies themselves can decide whether we are more likely to gain weight or lose weight. Scientists have found that the more delicious the food, the more excited our brains get.     3     Compared to people of normal weight, fat people feel more excited when they see delicious   food.

Also, our bodies use a variety of hormones (激素) to tell our brains whether they are hungry or full.   Ghrelin(胃饥饿素), for example, tells the brain that the body wants food. Leptin(瘦蛋白), meanwhile, tells the brain that it’s time to stop eating. Ghrelin and leptin help us to maintain a healthy weight.     4     As we get fatter, the levels of leptin in our bodies rises.   Our brains are told not to eat all the time. In the end, they would no longer trust leptin and would stop responding to its “warnings”. When we start to lose weight, leptin levels drop. Our brains think we are hungry and makes us find food in our fridge.

5     They may have tried very hard, but their bodies are working against their will.

A.But sometimes, they may work improperly.
B.People form habits around food at a young age.
C.If we often have delicious food, over time, our brain   will change.
D.Now you know why fat people often have a tough time losing weight.
E.There is also evidence to show industrial chemicals may increase body fat.
F.However, the science behind weight problems is more complicated than we think.
G.People with low levels of body satisfaction are more likely to gain weight over time.

Doctors in the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine have followed the meal-time habits of more than 500 people for six years,     1    (find) weight change is most affected by the size and     2    (frequent) of meals rather than the interval (间隔) from first to last meal. It challenges the popular trend of intermittent fasting (禁食疗方)     3     a useful weight loss strategy.

Intermittent fasting, also referred to as time-restricted feeding, is a dietary strategy where all meals     4    (consume) during a short window of time each day. These windows can extend from 6 to 10 hours, resulting in a person essentially fasting for up to 18 hours each day.

The idea reveals     5     is no link between the lime of a person’s eating window each day and weight changes. “Based on other studies that have come out, including     6    (we), we are starting to think timing of meals most likely doesn’t produce     7     instant impact on weight loss,” said doctor Bennett. “What does matter, however, is the total number of medium and large meals a person eats over the day.” It suggests simply eating smaller meals, less frequently, is     8     ultimately leads to weight loss.

All of this doesn’t mean intermittent fasting strategies won’t help. But what does seem increasingly clear is that the weight loss benefits occasionally     9    (see) with these eating strategies may be primarily driven by a reduced caloric intake. It doesn’t mean you can simply eat all you want in a short window each day and still expect     10    (lose) weight.

4 . Brain Doctor: “Ditch the Diet if You Want to Lose Weight”

From the grapefruit diet to “The Master Cleanse,” fad diets have become quite popular in our Holywood-influenced society. However, crash dieting is synonymous with food deprivation. Deprivation means never feeling satisfied after a meal, and no one can do that long-term.

As Americans, we eat larger portions than most other cultures, and much larger portions than our bodies actually need to feel satisfied.     1    .

Enter Dr. Alan Hirsch, a renowned neurologist, whose lifelong specialty has been understanding how our senses, and in particular, smell and taste affect the brain’s functioning. Dr. Hirsch noticed that many patients who had lost their sense of smell and taste due to illness or accident experienced rapid weight gain.     2     Enhancing the smell of food could lead to weight loss.

Dr. Hirsch studied hundreds of compounds and after years of research developed a set of virtually odorless and tasteless food sprinkles, called “Tastants,” that enhance the experience of eating and trigger the body to feel fuller on smaller portions. Then, in one of the largest clinical studies of a non-prescription weight-loss system, these Tastants were tested for effectiveness as a means of weight loss.

The results were significant.     3     Participants achieved these results without adding exercise or changing their diet. Hirsh recently made these Tastants available to the public as the SENSA Weight Loss System.

“The reason SENSA works, when diets don’t, is because it lets you do what no diet can,” says Dr. Hirsch. “It lets you lose weight while still eating the foods you love most without ever feeling hungry or deprived.”     4     Too good to be true?

How to try it free?

Apparently the company anticipated a somewhat skeptical response from consumers so they have launched a “try it before you buy it” campaign.

They are so confident you will lose weight with SENSA that new customers get to use the product for 30 days so that they can see results before deciding if they want to pay for it or not.

A.In order to look more pretty, keep a slim body and be more attractive in appearance, many people would like to lose weight by various ways.
B.Hirsh hypothesized that if loss of smell contributed to weight gain, then the opposite could be true.
C.So you eat what you want, you just eat less.
D.Eating at a restaurant costs, on average, $20 USD per meal-LARGE portions of food are served.
E.But what if you could actually train your brain to feel satisfied on smaller portions?
F.Over a 6 month period, 1,436 women and men sprinkled flavorless “Tastant” crystals on everything they ate, and lost an average of 30.5 pounds—nearly 15% of their total body weight.
