1 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

One of my most memorable trips took place during the summer vacation about three years ago, when my sister, my aunt and I took a trip to Spain because we were moving. On the day of the trip, I lay in bed thinking about my friends whom I was going to leave behind and thoughts were flooding in.

When we arrived at the hire station, we seemed to have some problems with our luggage because it was too much for a taxi, so we had to book a van (厢式送货车) to take our luggage to the airport. We waited for a long period to find a perfect van that would fit our luggage.

Before leaving, I felt very bad because I was going to a different country and was going to miss all my friends and family. I was not comfortable and cried.

The journey was almost perfect at the beginning, but soon it began to rain. Because of the rain, the drivers could not see far away, which caused a huge traffic jam. I was sitting by the window with a can of Coke that I had bought in the store earlier. My aunt and sister fell asleep, and during this time. I felt bored and thought about other things that bothered me. My eyes turned to the mountain in front of us.

A bus suddenly appeared in the picture. It was very close to us. Cars sped past us without any speed limit. Beside me was a very deep lake: I wondered to myself what if something or someone fell inside it. Suddenly, a bus in front of our van stopped, and because it was raining heavily and the van was going fast, no one could see what was going to happen. Then, bang, we bumped into each other. Our van overturned, but luckily, it didn’t fall into the lake. People came to help us get out of the van because we were blocked and the driver was half-dead.

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.续写部分分为两段,每段的开头语已为你写好。

We struggled to get out of the van and everything we had was gone.

3 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

It was dark, cold and raining on December 24. James left his office and walked slowly across the street to the parking place. He was very tired. He took out his car key and put down his umbrella. He put the key into the lock and turned it. Nothing happened. The door would not open. Then James realised that it was the wrong car. His car was red, but this one was dark blue. “Oh dear! I must have parked in a different place this morning,” thought he. Putting up his umbrella, he set off to look for his car. The rain poured down and the evening got colder and colder.

Having walked round all the side streets, James didn’t find his car. He was exhausted and angry. “Someone must have stolen my car,” he thought. “Now I shall have to go to the police station and report it.” The policeman there was very helpful. He wrote down a description of James car and then took his address and telephone number. As James was leaving, the policeman wished him a merry Christmas.

“Christmas!” thought James. “Oh no! I’ve forgotten all about Christmas. I haven’t bought my wife a present and now all the shops are shut. What shall I do?” When waiting for the bus, he got wetter and more miserable (难受的). He had no umbrella and the rain flowed down into his collar. He felt like bursting into tears.

When James got home, he found his wife standing on a chair and looking for something in a very high cupboard. “What are you doing, Jessica?” he asked. “The big gold star for the Christmas tree,” Jessica replied. “Just a moment. I’ll go into the garage (车库) and fetch the stepladder (梯子) for you,” said James. When James saw .the well-decorated Christmas tree and lots of presents under it, he felt even more unhappy. “What a lovely tree!” he thought as he went downstairs, “I haven’t even got one present for Jessica. I’ve lost my car and I’m completely wet. I must have lost my umbrella, too.”

4 . 阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

Days of January were passing and every girl of the girls’ school was very happy as the selections for plays and dances for the annual function were started.

Sneha’s class teacher, Pravina, asked Sneha, her favorite student, to play the leading character in a play. Because she was never allowed to play a male character, Sneha jumped with joy, but suddenly she became so serious about the costumes (戏服).

“How many times I have to tell you not to participate in plays and dances! Can’t you understand that we can’t buy or borrow the costly costume? You can take part in debates, quizes, or essay competitions in which you don’t have to spend money and you can enrich your knowledge,” her mother said angrily when Sneha told her about it.

The reason behind all this was their financial condition. Sneha always had an idea about it in her home and she was mature enough to say NO to any money demanding condition. This time, however, the desire of fame and the excitement of the activity were overcoming her fear.

Sneha went in her room hiding her sadness deep in her heart. She was so nervous about what was going to happen when she would tell Pravina about leaving the play. Would she warn her not to allow her in any competition? Now it was clear that she had to leave the play.

The next day, downhearted Sneha acted like nothing had happened and got ready for school. Her mom ordered her to say NO for the play.

Sneha always loved Pravina because whenever there was a play or dance, the girls did not need to be worried about anything related with money. She would find a way to help. But Sneha didn’t want to tell her the truth.

Paragraph l:

Sneha went to the teacher,“I don’t want to take part in the play and I’m leaving.”

6 . According to the US economist Robert Gordon, all the “impressive stuff” has been created; we have run out of the big, life-changing ideas needed to encourage rapid economic growth and engineers are now only just making slight changes. Inventions such as mobile phones, Gordon says, have had less impact than, for example, the invention of indoor plumbing (管道系统).

But this is a misunderstanding of how engineers work. There is no “Wow!” moment. The development of new technology happens little by little. You build upon the work of those before you, thinking about what could be done better and what could be improved. It’s an unending task. Michael Faraday invented the first electric motor. But Faraday’s breakthrough followed William Sturgeon’s invention of the electromagnet (电磁铁), and Alessandro Volta’s invention of the battery before that. Faraday would have expected future engineers to pick up the baton (接力棒) later down the line.

Reduced energy supplies, increasing populations and mass urbanization keep clever young engineers awake at night. Those, for example, who enter the yearly James Dyson Award invent things that solve these problems and more. The 2012 winner Dan Watson designed a clever system of escape rings for fishing boat nets that deals with the issue of overfishing — not an exciting topic, but his invention is exceptional. Human inventiveness remains unreduced in the face of new global challenges.

Our problem is patience. We expect new technology at a rate like never before. I can’t tell you the world’s next big invention. Last week brought news that we’ve invented a new way to deal with antibiotic-resistant bacteria. Next week may bring a major development in another field. The biggest thing holding invention back is our impatience. With enough time and support, bright young engineers will develop exciting new technology to solve the world’s trickiest problems. Many have already begun.

1. Why does the author mention what Robert Gordon says?
A.To introduce the topic.B.To illustrate a new invention.
C.To provide background information.D.To express his opinion about the topic.
2. What can we infer from Michael Faraday’s example?
A.New technology has been developing step by step.
B.New inventions fail to deal with new global challenges.
C.Michael Faraday set a good model for William Sturgeon.
D.Technology helps future engineers achieve success smoothly.
3. What makes Dan Watson’s invention excellent?
A.His young age.B.His patience with technology.
C.His effort to solve real world problems.D.His wish to win the James Dyson Award.
4. Which word best describes the author’s attitude to technological development nowadays?
A.Doubtful.B.Uncaring.C.Disapproving.D.Optimistic.

7 . Harvard scientists have created a “bionic (仿生的) leaf”that turns solar energy into liquid fuel. The work is the fruit of cooperation between Professor Pamela Silver at Harvard Medical School and Professor Daniel Nocera in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences.

The pair, who began cooperating two years ago, share an interest in developing energy sources that might someday have practical application in remote areas in the developing world. Silver named the system “bionic” because it joins a biological system to a clever piece of inorganic chemistry previously developed by Nocera: that invention, widely known as the artificial leaf, turns solar energy into hydrogen fuel.

Nocera's artificial leaf, which serves as fuel source in the bionic leaf, works by sandwiching a photovoltaic cells (光电池) between two metal oxide catalysts (氧化催化物). When put in water at room temperature and normal atmospheric pressure, the artificial leaf copies photosynthesis (光合作用). Nocera has been perfecting the artificial leaf since he first demonstrated it in 201l;today, it is far more efficient than a field-grown plant, which assimilates only 1 percent of sunlight's energy.

The hydrogen is a fuel with a broad use, Nocera reports, and could easily become the basis of a fuel cell, but it has not been widely adopted, partly because it is a gas. By contrast, liquid fuels are much easier to handle and store.

“Modern society”, says Nocera, “has created an entire manufacturing economy based not only on burning fossil fuels, but on using petroleum to make things such as rubber and plastics.” “ A lot of chemistry was done which set that up,” he notes. The present system makes sense now because petroleum costs so little; a sustainable system like the artificial or bionic leaf can't compete with that. But when oil becomes less and less, he say, “We might want to redo everything in terms of manufacturing. In the future, you might want to make everything renewable. Then, you can trust bionic leaf.”

1. What can be implied from the second paragraph?
A.The pair invented the artificial leaf.
B.Bionic leaf got its name from its invention developed by Nocera.
C.The pair are concerned about energy sources in developing countries.
D.Both bionic leaf and artificial leaf can change solar energy into liquid fuel.
2. The underlined “assimilate” in paragraph 3 most nearly means ________.
A.recordsB.absorbsC.attractsD.equals
3. Why does Nocera have faith in bionic leaf?
A.Fossil fuels now are exhausted and cannot be employed.
B.Bionic leaf guarantees a sustainable energy supply compared with oil.
C.Liquid fuels created by bionic leaf are much easier to handle and store.
D.Bionic leaf is far more efficient than a field-grown plant and fossil fuels.
4. What does the author mainly talk about concerning the bionic leaf?
A.Its scientific efficiency.
B.Its current commercial uses.
C.Its development and significance.
D.Its difference from the artificial leaf.

8 . In American culture, I am noticing a lack of respect, especially among children. This should be treated _________ since disrespectful children will become disrespectful teenagers, and then disrespectful adults. American culture is _________ the ways of teaching respect, while other cultures have methods that Americans could learn from.

In 1995, I spent a couple of months in Kenya where I lived with a pastor’s family. This pastor was a part of the Maasai tribes that have some unique customs. One of them is the _________ that the children give the adults. When an adult approaches a Maasai child, the child will _________ and tilt their head slightly saying “Suppa”. The adult responses by saying “Ippa” touching the top of their heads. This simple act shows respect for the adult. The children _________ that they are their elder and that the adult deserves respect.

In my early 20’s, I worked at a children’s home in South Carolina where the children from 4 to 19 years old were taught to respect their elders. They _________ me as “Mr. Vince” and every adult worker there with a “Mr, Mrs, or Ms.”. However, as I counsel and talk to teachers and other professionals who work with children now, there seems to be a _________ in such as friendly behavior that children give adults. Fewer students treat teachers with respect: Children frequently talk back to their teachers, parents or seniors, interrupt conversations, and disregard their _________. Children casually speak with other adults like waiters, store clerks, postmen, cashiers, etc. in the way as if they are children’s _________.

Immanuel Kant expressed two __________ attitudes in Europe that are still dominant today. One is that only humans are persons because they have autonomy—they freely choose to act on principles by __________ laws on themselves, and not on desires. It is this mind based on __________ that gives humans special status. Second, to learn to follow principles instead of desires, a human child needs to learn __________ to the laws of adults. They must practice __________ regulation before they are able to practice autonomy. Kant said that “act in the way you want others to act in the situation, taking other people as persons, not __________ you use for your own goals”. Only in this way can you become a real person with intrinsic values.
