Last Christmas was a very difficult time for me. My family and all of my close friends were back home in Florida, and I was all alone in a rather cold California.
I was working a double shift at the Southwest Airlines ticket counter, it was about 9:00 P.M. on Christmas Eve, and I was feeling really miserable inside.
When it was time for me to call the next person to the counter, I looked out to see the sweetest-looking old man standing with a cane. He walked very slowly over to the counter and in the faintest voice told me that he had to go to New Orleans. When I tried to explain to him that there were no more flights that night and that he would have to go in the morning, he looked very worried.
After much time, I was able to at least find out that this old man was dropped off at the curb (路缘) on Christmas Eve by his sister-in-law and told to go to New Orleans, where he had family. When I asked if he could come back tomorrow, he said that he would wait at the airport until tomorrow.
Naturally, I felt a little ashamed. Here I was feeling very sorry for myself about being alone on Christmas, when this old man named Clarence MacDonald was sent to me to remind me of what being alone really meant. It broke my heart.
Immediately, I told him we would get it all straightened out, and our Customer Service agent helped to book him a seat for the earliest flight the next morning. We gave him the senior citizens’ fare, which gave him some extra money for traveling. About this time, he started to look very tired, and when I stepped around the counter to ask him if he was all right, I saw that his leg was wrapped in a bandage (绷带). He had been standing on it that whole time, holding a plastic bag full of clothes.

In a small town called Meadowville, there was a beloved playground that had brought joy to generations of children. 11-year-old Emma and her best friends, Alice and Leo, were among those who idled away their after-school time and weekends there all year round. It was a place where imaginations soared, friendships blossomed, and laughter echoed through the air.
One afternoon, rushing out the school gate, Emma shouted, “Let’s go down to the playground!” The three of them got there soon, but it was locked up. The fence was broken and the swings had tape around them.
Shocked, they stared into each other’s eyes, not knowing why. A man approached them, explaining that it was unsafe and the council had decided to shut it down.
“Will they fix it?” asked Alice.
“No. it will cost a lot, at least ten thousand dollars.” the man shook his head, walking away. Leo looked desperate, gazing at the playground and then hanging his head, as if bidding farewell. “We need to get some help!” Emma dragged Alice towards her home.
On stepping into the house, Emma exclaimed, “Dad! We need ten thousand dollars...” Her dad, who was drinking coffee, turned his head around, “What?” Alice then revealed the truth. Hearing this heart-breaking news, Emma’s parents were more than surprised, for their childhood was closely connected with that playground as well. They spread the news to other families.
Instead of providing the money, they suggested the children take matters into their own hands while parents offered assistance.

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________The Netherlands is a country where much of it is below sea level. Dikes (堤坝) are great walls that stop the North Sea from rushing in and flooding the country. For many centuries the people of the Netherlands have worked to keep the walls strong to keep their country safe. Even little children there are quite aware that a small hole in the walls can cause big damage in the country. There was a boy who was named Peter. His father was one of the men who would open and close the gates in the dikes for the ships to pass out of the Netherlands’ canals into the great sea.
One cold afternoon when Peter was eight years old, his mother asked him to deliver some cakes she baked to his blind friend who lived across the dike. Peter stayed with him for a while, shared his experience of the walk and described the sun, the flowers, and the ships far out in the sea.
Then he found it was dark totally. So he said goodbye to his friend and set out for home immediately. On his way back, as he walked beside the canal, he noticed that the water had risen a lot because of rain and it was beating against the dike violently.
As Peter was walking along, he suddenly heard a noise of trickling (滴流的) water. He stopped and saw a small hole in the dike through which a tiny stream was flowing. Peter knew the danger that could be caused as the little hole would soon become a larger one and the whole country could be flooded. So he climbed down the side of the dike and put his finger into the tiny hole. The flowing of the water stopped in no time.

Mark grabbed his keys. He needed to get out of the house quickly. He had been trying to save as much money as possible from the government assistance he received due to his disability, but it was harder and harder with prices rising daily.
Unfortunately, he lost half his right arm in a car accident several years ago, and it was hard to find a new job in his town in Tampa, Florida. He lost his previous job recently when the company went bankrupt (破产). For now, he only had those government checks keeping him fed, but he was tapping into his savings for everything else, and they were running out fast.
One of his friends had gotten him an interview and he was on his way. But after closing and locking his door, Mark turned around and got the shock of his life. A pregnant (怀孕的) woman was lying on his lawn, and/he had no idea how long she had been there.
He grabbed his phone and called 911 quickly, and suddenly, it started to rain. Finally, it came, and he explained to the doctors that he had to move her because of the rain.
“Don’t worry, sir. She’s cold, so it was good that you moved her. Do you know this woman?” asked the doctor. Mark shook his head.
“Can I give you my phone number? If you don’t find her family or anyone, can you call me? My name is Mark Higgins.”
“I’ll see what I can do,” the doctor said, noting down his number and leaving with the woman.
Mark closed his door and sat down on his couch, hoping his heart would stop beating so fast. Suddenly, he remembered his interview and looked at the clock. He was late for it. He dashed to his car, praying they would wait for him.

Dear Mr. Li,
________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Yours,
Li Hua
At a restaurant in scenic Augsburg, Germany, waiter Paul Blachut was busy at work. It was a warm Sunday afternoon in May 2021 and many people had come for relaxation at this pretty place beside the Lech river.
From behind the bar, Paul, 24, had a good view of the river; there were stone steps that stretched some 20 meters down from the restaurant to the riverbank. He could see that, along the S-shaped shore, people were picnicking and children were playing. Many were cooling their feet in the river. The melt water from the Alps meant the water was very cold at that time of year, and it flowed quickly.
Among those enjoying the cooling water were a mother and her two teenage daughters. They were standing on the edge of the riverbank, playing with an inflatable tube(充气船)when, suddenly, the girls lost their footing and were caught in the river’s current.
It all happened so fast. The girls desperately grabbed on to the tube, which their mother was sitting in, pulling her into the river, too. Then all three were being carried away by the current.
A bystander raced up the steps to the restaurant, and Paul looked up from his work when he heard the shout: “I think three people are drowning in the Lech!”
Paul could only see a tube moving up and down in the river. Then he spotted the three women a short distance away, waving their arms, trying to grasp anything they could. Paul’s mind raced. Why wasn’t anyone helping them? Frightened, he saw that one of the them kept sinking.
Despite having no lifesaving training, he rushed down to the riverbank, quickly taking his cell phone, wallet and keys from his pockets and pulling off his T-shirt. Then he jumped into the river. He didn’t care about the cold; all he could think about was saving the women. It was obvious that they were helpless.

There’s a park close to my house, with a small lake in one corner that’s home to many creatures. Every Sunday morning, I go jogging in this park. As I circle the lake, I notice an elderly woman sitting by the water with a metal cage beside her.
Today, my curiosity made me stop and approach her.
As I took a closer look, I saw that the cage was actually a small metal trap, and there were a few turtles walking around the trap, unharmed. The lady took one of the turtles in her hands and gently rubbed the shell (壳) with a sponge (海绵) brush.
I came over to say hello to her politely. “Good morning,” I said. “I come here for jogging every Sunday morning and I see you sitting here by the lake. Please don’t mind my curiosity and innocence, but I really want to know what you’re doing to the turtles.”
The lady smiled and said, “I am cleaning the turtle’s shell. Turtles gradually get more and more algae (水藻) and other dirt on their shells, which weighs them down and prevents their swimming abilities. It also reduces their ability to absorb heat. Over time, their shells become weak and rot (腐烂) away.”
“Oh wow! That’s really thoughtful of you!” I shouted in shock.
She continued, “Every Sunday morning, I spend a couple of hours by the lake to relax and help out these little guys stay clean. Strange as it sounds, this is my little way to make a difference in the world.”
I thought for a while and said, “But all freshwater turtles have algae and other dirt on their shells. They live with that their whole lives, don’t they?”
“Yes, sadly, they can’t help it,” she replied.
