I had lived with a couple of friends in a small apartment in London half a dozen years ago. One day we needed some tools to put up shelves and microphones for the party. We didn’t mean to buy the tools and rent them was expensive. Besides, it really got us annoyed was that we would also collectively create mountains of waste.
Inspiring by tool libraries in the USA and lending libraries in Berlin, we started a small Library of Things local. Up to now we have run five Library of Things site across London. Every of them lends approximately 40 items to 120 local borrowers monthly. We make that easy for people to borrow an affordable carpet cleaner, or tent, which finally leads a better quality of life.

While walking through the high-speed railway station with my father, I came across the young man who asked if he can borrow my cellphone to make a call. He had his phone and wallet been stolen and didn’t know how to do. Heard his explanation, my father asked him how much he needed to get home. He replied in a worrying voice, “ About 150 yuan.” My father took out all the cashes in his wallet - about 200 yuan and gave it to the man, which he thanked us again and again. About a year before, I pulled into CC Mall do some shopping. I found a shopping cart what was in the parking space next to my car, and saw a purse in it. I didn’t know who it was belonged to. I opened the purse and went through the cards with no lucky of finding something but a woman’s name, and then I found the address on the top of her check. With the help of MapQuest on my mobile phone, I got the directions to her house. I drove 15 miles to this lady’s house and knock at the door. No one was home at that time, so I left a note with my phone number on it, letting her know that I had her purse. She eventually called me and we arranged the appointment. While I got to her house, she offered me dinner and all the money in her purse, but I mustn’t accept it. I told her that it was the right thing to do.

Last weekend, we went to the local orphanage(孤儿院) to do some voluntary works. On the way here, we bought many books and toys with the money donating by students in our class. Upon our arrival, we handed out all the gifts to the children, then we patiently taught them to sing songs. To our surprise, we receive pictures drawn by them as souvenirs. When it was time for us to leave, the children waved our hands and thanked us for our kindness. Seen the children’s bright smiles, we considered a visit worthwhile. We were real happy to bring sunshine to their lives. In the future, we can organize more of meaningful voluntary activities.

Our class joined in a meaningful activity during the winter vacation. First, we went to visit the old lady who lived all alone. Some chatted with her but others helped do a thorough cleaning for us. When the work was done, the house looked real neat and tidy. Then we went to the sport center, where all equipment needed polished. We set out to work at once. Everything was dust-free at no time. Having done all this, we saw a pleasant community than before. Tiring as we were, we felt happy as all of our work was paid off.

My mother was driving me to school while we saw a cyclist fall over his bike onto the side of the road ahead. Without the second thought we pulled over and got out. He said he was OK but I could see his face bleed, so I returned to our car, taking out a case of first-aid supply like bandages. Cars were going by but we were safely on the side of the road and manage to tend to the injuries. Thankfully his head wasn’t hurt seriously. I was glad we happened have all those supplies in our car. Though we have never used them before, but we must prepare them in case anything like that happens again.

Today our class went out to do some clean. We gathered at the school gate and started out early on the morning. Some collected the rubbishes in the park. Some cleared the old posters off the walls and another swept the street. We hoped to make our city more beautifully with our own hands. At the same time, some of us went to the public places, which there were a lot of people. We kept on telling people not destroy the beauty of nature so that we could have the cleaner world. In my opinion, such activities is necessary and instructive unless some people are aware of the importance of protecting to the environment at present.
