2 . Two weeks ago, a 5-year-old girl named Sunshine Oelfke emptied out her piggy bank (存钱罐) onto the living room floor and immediately started counting. Her grandmother, Jackie Oelfke, thought she was playing as she carefully lined up the coins, but then she saw the girl put the coins into a plastic bag and place it in her backpack.
“What are you doing with that money?” Jackie asked her granddaughter.
“I’m taking it to school,” Sunshine replied. “I’m going to take it for milk money. My friend Layla doesn’t get milk— her mom doesn’t have milk money and I do.”
Jackie’s heart melted at Sunshine’s words. Choked with strong feelings, Jackie held her sweet granddaughter tightly in her arms.
Last week, Jackie and Sunshine met with her teacher, Rita Hausher, and handed her the $30 the kindergartner had saved. There are 20 kids in Sunshine’s class and about half don’t get milk. It costs $ 0.45 a carton (纸盒). The total adds up to about $180 a month for every child in the class to have milk every day.
After dropping Sunshine off at school, Jackie posted a tearful video on Facebook to explain her granddaughter’s plan. To her surprise, many people offered to donate toward the cause. Within a week, Jackie raised more than $1,000. Now every student in Sunshine’s class can get free milk for the rest of the year.
Jackie said Sunshine doesn’t see her kind act as a big deal. She was just trying to look out for her friends. “She doesn’t understand the effect she’s brought about,” Jackie said. “But now she knows she can do whatever she puts her mind to.”

7 . A public welfare initiative calling for volunteers from all over the country to donate hair to make wigs (假发) for children with cancer, has brought a lot of comfort.
The program, the Black Ribbon Initiative, was initiated by Chongqing University Cancer Hospital in April. Twenty-three students joined in the first round of hair donations to help children who had lost their hair as a result of chemotherapy and radiation treatments.
In January 2020, 3-year-old Liu Lizi from Guizhou province was diagnosed with blastoma, a type of cancer. The girl, who received radiation therapy at the hospital, was depressed after losing her beautiful natural hair and being teased by other children.
“For cancer patients, especially those little cancer patients, hair is hope,” said Lai Yun, a volunteer at the hospital.
Before the end of last year, Lizi, who is nearly at the final period of her current radiation treatment, had received 30 treatments. But she is no longer melancholy. In December, not long after a head measurement, she received her first wig made of real hair and found that it suited her well.
One of the hair donors, Li Chaoyang, explained why she got involved, “That day happened to be my 23rd birthday, and I finally made up my mind to sign up for the initiative and donate my long hair as a special gift. I feel like the children’s wearing wigs and dancing with joy has cured me mentally. They shed light in my life, and I hope my hair will be a light that brings them happiness.”

9 . Dr. Paul Farmer, who died unexpectedly at the age of 62 in Rwanda, was one of the most extraordinary people I have ever known. As co-founder of the global health organization Partners in Health, Paul spent more than 30 years changing the way health care is delivered in the poorest places on earth.
Along the way, his fine mind, big heart, and continuous drive to do good inspired countless others to follow his example.
While still a student at Harvard Medical School in the 1980s, Paul and his colleagues opened a one-room clinic in remote Cange, Haiti, where they not only cared for locals, but trained a team of health workers to serve the surrounding areas. He lived there in a simple home with concrete floors, and no hot water, not so different from the adapted bus he grew up in with his parents in Florida.
Within a few years, the clinic’s work gained worldwide notice for bringing tuberculosis (肺结核) under control in the area. Today, Partners in Health operates 16 health institutions in Haiti, and employs a local staff of nearly 7,000. They also operate in 11 other countries, including Rwanda, where they partnered with the government to rebuild the nation’s health system. Millions of people are served every year, most of whom live on less than a few dollars a day.
I’m honored to have worked closely with Paul. For 20 years, I watched him make a difference in the poorest places, even in the face of dysfunctional (功能失调的) politics and violence.
Paul’s passing is a huge loss to the world. But his voice still rings in our ears. All our lives are passing, but the purpose of living lasts: to lift others and enable them to live and work just as he did — with love, gratitude, and joy.
