Caroline’s Treats

Every Saturday, Caroline came to the Westport Animal Shelter to visit Jinks. “Can I take Jinks home with me?”Caroline asked Ms Preston, the woman in charge of the shelter. “He can’t go home with anyone quite yet,” said Ms Preston. “His leg is injured, and it will take time to heal. And you’d better ask your parents before adopting a dog, anyway!”added Ms Preston.

As soon as she got home. Caroline started talking to her mom about Jinks. “Well, I sure hope Jinks gets better soon,” said Mom. “Ms Preston told me the shelter is about to close.”“What?”asked Caroline, her voice rising with alarm. “I ran into Ms. Preston yesterday. She said the shelter can’t afford to stay open.” Mom explained. “Oh, no!” Caroline cried. “But the shelter can’t close. What will happen to all of the animals there?” Suddenly, Caroline brightened. “My friends and I will figure out how to save the shelter.”

The kids agreed to hold a Save the Shelter Fair. They met all week to plan the fair and each of them prepared something special. Caroline decided to bake some cookies to sell on the fair. “What should I call my cookies?”Caroline asked her mom, who was helping her. “How about Caroline’s Treats?”said Mom.

It was beautiful, sunny on the day of the fair. Everything was a big success—except Caroline’s bake sale!No one was buying Caroline’s Treats!

Just then, Mr. Larson came by with his dog, Bowser. Caroline threw Bowser a piece of her cookies, and in no time, Bowser finished it and was looking around for more.

“Great doggie treats!”said Mr. Larson “I’ll take a bag. No, three bags.” Mr. Larson must have told other people about the treats, because before long, more and more people with dogs were stopping by.

Sometimes, we all need that one person to believe in us if we ever want to change our lives. Thankfully, one homeless man’s note was about to get found by someone willing to help turn his life around.

Anthony Johnson is a 36-year-old who had been living without a home in England. Sadly, his time on the streets meant that Anthony struggled to find work. He soon decided to leave a note at a bus shelter asking anyone to give him a chance so he could make his life worth living.

It turned out that Anthony had once got caught up with the wrong crowd. Although he has turned his life around, Anthony had no way of making money and couldn’t afford a home. To top it off, Anthony had also been battling his mental health in the last few years and just needed a chance to make it for himself.

It wasn’t until 16-year-old Charlotte Howard saw the note that everything started to change. Charlotte wanted to help Anthony in his quest to turn things around and decided to start a GoFundMe page. Here, the teen hoped to raise almost $400-$130 to buy a trailer and the rest to cover the cost of the repairs.

It didn’t take long for Charlotte’s post to take the nation by storm, and the page soon had more donations than the teen ever imagined. In just six days, Charlotte had blown her initial goal out of the water as the page had received more than $2,300 in donations. It was way more than either of the pair ever expected.

3 . 阅读下面短文,根据其内容和所给段落的开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文

Several years ago I loaned a girl some cash as she badly needed some work done to her car. We eventually worked in different cities but remained friends. About a year later she sent me a card thanking me for helping out and repaid me, which I had never expected from her. The $250 she gave me was nice to have, but honestly was not needed, nor did I expect her to repay me.

About a week after I had been given this cash, I went on a late night food run with a friend, when I encountered a homeless man who was taking shelter from the less than pleasant weather we were having at the time. The homeless man who was sitting at a table next to us was told by the waitress that he couldn't be there if he didn't order anything. I overheard him ask how much a cup of coffee was, counted the few dollars he had in his pocket, and a little reluctantly ordered coffee so he could stay inside.

As I heard all of this, and thinking of the cash I had just received but didn't need, I felt this might be someone I could help. So I engaged the man in some conversation, because I know most people who are homeless don't get the benefit of casual conversation very often. I learned he was aged 45 and had previously worked as a tree trimmer (修剪工)off the books. Unfortunately about a year ago he fell while working and badly hurt his back and was no longer able to work until he got his back medically addressed. After about 10-15 minutes of conversation I told him that if he felt comfortable accepting my offer, I would buy him whatever food off the menu he wanted. He resisted because he didn't want to trouble me, I insisted he accept my offer because everyone deserves a warm meal. He eventually accepted and ordered something simple.
