4 . Charlie Chaplin, British comedian, producer, writer, director and composer, is widely regarded as the greatest comic artist of the screen and one of the most important figures in the film history.
Chaplin was named after his father, a British entertainer. He spent his early childhood with his mother, the singer Hannah Hall, after she and his father separated, and took the place of his mentally unstable mother to appear on the stage. However, he and his mother soon separated from each other because the sick Hall was sent to a hospital. Then, Charlie was sent to a series of boarding schools.
Using his mother’s show-business contacts, Charlie became a professional entertainer in 1897 when he joined the Eight Lancashire Lads, a dancing act. His following stage characters include a small role in William Gillette^ Sherlock Holmes (1899). While touring America with the Karno company in 1913, Chaplin was signed to appear in Mack Sennett’s Keystone comedy films. Though Making a Living (1914) was not the failure that historians have claimed , Chaplin’s first screen character did not show him to best advantage. To come up with a more-workable screen image, Chaplin created an outfit consisting of a too-small coat, too-large pants and a walking stick. As a finishing touch, he put on a mustache(胡子).It was in his second Keystone film, Kid Auto Races at Venice (1914), that Chaplin’s classic screen character, “the Little Tramp(流浪汉)“,was born.
In truth, Chaplin did not always portray a tramp; in many of his films his character was employed as a waiter, store clerk? stagehand, fireman, and the like. But the Tramp’s attraction was universal: audiences loved his cheekiness(厚脸皮),unexpected bravery and especially his recovery in the face of difficulties which moved the audience most. Some historians have traced the Tramp’s origins to Chaplin’s Dickensian childhood, while others have suggested that the character had its roots in the motto (座右铭)of Chaplin’s teacher, Fred Karno: ”Keep it eager, gentlemen, keep it eager. “ Whatever the case, within months after his movie was on, Chaplin was the screen’s biggest star.

Animated movies use drawings instead of real people. Artists must draw thousands of pictures and each picture must be a little different. For example, if the movie-maker wants to show a girl running, the artist must draw her feet in different places in each picture. When the pictures are shown very quickly, one after the other, it looks like the girl is running. Walt Disney was not the first or only person to use animation in movies, but he is the most renowned. His first Mickey Mouse cartoon, produced in 1927, was called Plane Crazy. This was a short, silent movie about the adventures of a little mouse.
Many people in the movie business thought that animation was only appropriate for short cartoons. Disney did not agree with them. He believed that he could tell any kind of story using animation. His first long movie was Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. Disney spent all his money making this movie. Fortunately, it was a great success. He made Pinocchio next and then Dumbo (about a baby elephant), and he didn’t look back after this.
When we think of Disney, however, we don’t only think of movies, we also think of Disneyland. There are Disneylands in Japan, the United States of America and France. They are large parks where people can meet Disney’s characters and visit scenes from his movies.
Although Walt Disney made many of the famous movies many years ago, they are as popular now as they were when he made them. Today we can buy them on video and see them in movie theatres from time to time. When Walt Disney began making his animated cartoons all those years ago, people drew all the pictures by hand. Nowadays computers do much of his work.

8 . Arun Kumar Bajaj has a very unusual skill — he can paint with a sewing machine. Technically, it’s embroidering, not painting, but his artworks are so detailed that they can pass as paintings to the untrained eyes. And the fact that he does it all with a sewing machine just makes that much more impressive.
Arun was really good at drawing and painting while growing up and dreamed of becoming a famous painter, but his father died suddenly 15 years ago, which destroyed his plans and forced him to give up school in order to run the family business. His father was a tailor and he became one too, but he didn’t let the artist in him die. He started “painting” with a needle and thread, but instead of using his hands, he decided on a rather unusual tool — the sewing machine. It took him a while to master this unique art form, but today he is recognized as the world’s only sewing machine artist. His works become very popular both in India and abroad. It’s easy to see why, just by looking at them, but what really makes his embroideries special is the tool he uses.
“You need to be very careful because once you’ve stitched the cloth, there’s no way you can repair it,” Arun said. “It’s all done in a single layer to give the painting a neat look.”
Some of Arun’s most impressive works include a 4×2 feet painting of the court of Ranjit Singh which took the artist over a year to finish. Arun runs a tailoring business in the Adalat Bazar of Patiala, but he devotes a lot of his time to his artistic dream as well.

9 . In real life Joanna Garcia Swisher, 41, is happily married to former Major League Baseball player Nick Swisher, 40, and raising daughters Sailor, 4, and Emerson, 7. On TV she needs the help of a matchmaker to find love in the new Hallmark Channel romance As Luck Would Have It. She opens up about raising strong girls, how her parents’ recent deaths affected her and which roles fans recognize her for the most.
You haven’t needed a matchmaker — but if life had turned out differently, would you use one?
I would totally have been game for it. I was set up by a friend of ours to meet my husband, but I think it sounds so fun.
You star opposite Allen Leech — were you a Downton Abbey fan?
I’m a huge Downton fan, but I know Allen personally very well. He happened to marry my best friend’s little sister. His mom actually cooked me dinner a couple of times while I was shooting!
You’ve been on TV since you were a teen. Which role gets you recognized most?
Sweet Magnolias now. But overall I would say Reba. I also get recognized for being Amy Adams more than I get recognized for being myself.
You lost your mother, father and grandmother in the past year and a half. How are you and your family doing?
My daughters have watched me go through so much in the last year, from the highs of the success of Sweet Magnolias to the lowest of lows, losing my parents and my grandmother. I really believe that it’s not what happens to you, it’s what happens for you. Even in their passing, as tragic as it was ... I know that it’s not for nothing. My mom was such a strong, capable, amazing woman; my father was the ultimate father and feminist and just huge source of support — and I think that solidified my strength. So I only hope that I’m modeling that same strength for my girls.

10 . The following four world-famous artists have stood the test of time. You can see their artworks in most important galleries.
Botticelli (1445-1510)
Sandro Botticelli was an extremely successful Italian painter during the Early Renaissance. As well as standard religious works, his paintings are filled with imaginative mythological (神学的) figures. Realism was ignored in his paintings because he used allegories (寓言) within delicate color and poetic lines.
Michelangelo Merisi (1573-1610)
Probably the most revolutionary artist of his time, the Italian painter Michelangelo abandoned the rules that had guided a century of artists before him. He is known for his desire to show the realism and the emotion in the paintings. He used ordinary working people with irregular, rough and characterful faces as models.
Edouard Manet (1832-1883)
One of the first nineteenth century artists to approach modern-life subjects, he was a vital painter in changing from Realism to Impressionism. Almost all the paintings of Edouard Manet represent scenes of the streets of Paris. His paintings of cafe scenes are observations of social life in nineteenth century Paris.
Pablo Ruiz Picasso (1881 - 1973)
He is probably the most important figure in 20th Century art. No painter before him had had such an effect on the art world in his own lifetime. Known as the father of modern art, Picasso experimented with different colors and shapes. His greatness lies in his role both as revolutionary and traditionalist at once.
