1 . Some documents have been making the rounds lately — where people who work various positions in different industries share how much they’re paid.
Bravo! It’s about time we blew up that old belief that salaries have to stay secret. This is not just a matter of curiosity. Having information about salaries can help narrow the gender wage gap, which has barely changed for more than a decade. Recently released date from the US Census Bureau shows that, on average, women working full time still are paid only 82 cents for every dollar paid to a man. And the gap is even wider for many women of color: Black women make 62 cents, and Latinas just 54 cents. What’s more, the pay gap even extends into her retirement. Because she earned less and therefore paid less to the social security system, she receives less in social security benefits.
Having greater access to salary information is helping to speed things up. A new research report by the American Association of University Women shows that the wage gap tends to be smaller in job sectors where pay transparency (透明) is a must. For example, among federal government workers, there’s just a 13 percent pay difference between men and women, and in state government, the gap is about 17 percent. But in private, for-profit companies, where salaries are generally kept under wraps, the gender wage gap jumps to 29 percent.
Fortunately, salary information is increasingly available on some websites. Certain companies and many human resources departments are pushing ahead with this practice. Of course, it’s going to take more than salary transparency to equalize earnings between women and men. But sharing salaries can and must be part of the solution. The more information women have about how jobs are valued — and what different people earn — the better they will understand their value in the labor market and be able to push for the pay they deserve.

2 . An increasing number of middle-class Chinese are buying luxury goods outside the Chinese mainland, with more overseas travel driving the trend, a KPMG report said on Tuesday.
Of the seventy-one percent of then said they bought luxury items during such trips, with cosmetics, watches and handbags being the most popular items.
The report--- The Global Teach of China Luxury---is based on a survey of 1,200 middle class Chinese consumers in 24 cities. Market research firm TNS conducted the study.
Respondents were 20 to 44 years old, with a minimum household income of 7,500 yuan($ 1,205) a month in tier-one cities and 5,500 yuan elsewhere.
Chinese consumers associate certain countries with particular products. For example, Switzerland is recognized for its luxury watchers, while France scores highest for cosmetics and perfumes.
Nick Debnam, KPMG’s Asia Pacific chairman in consumer markets and the author of the report, said the growing number of Chinese people traveling overseas is a result of the emerging middle class and easier travel arrangements.
“What we are now seeing is that the brands which are well positioned in China are receiving a boost(增长) in overseas markets from the emergence of a surging new class of traveling and well-off Chinese consumers,” he said.
China has become a focus of the luxury industry in recent years, and the travel and spending habits of Chinese consumers are also reshaping the luxury goods market, Debnam said.
Pascal Aemoudom, an exper with A. T. Kearney Management Consulting Co Ltd in Shanghai, said Chinese consumers are playing an increasingly important role in the global luxury market.
“Brands like Louis Vuitton or Gucci do have about 30 percent of their sales made by Chinese consumers. Regarding China’s native consumers, overseas should be around 55 to 60 percent of the total,” he said.
“With high taxes on luxury products sold in the domestic market, consumers can save 30 to 50 percent when buying in Europe or the United States,” said Armoudom.
Lower prices aren’t the only incentive to buy overseas--- the shopping experience is also unique. “In luxury watches, a few rich Chinese brand’s headquarters or factory after having visited the site and talked to the staff there.
Debnam said in such situations, international and local brands need a global strategy for Chinese consumers in both locations.
“Brands need a strong market position in China and overseas so that Chinese customers can find their products easily,” he said. “For example, in clothing, the Asian cut is quite different from the European cut, and you need to carry the right cut to make the sale.”
Meanwhile, Armoudom said, pricing policies will become a major issue that needs to be handled carefully. “Chinese shoppers may become frustrated if they notice lower prices in location A for an item which they already bought at a higher price in location B.”
