2 . China is one of the first countries to breed a medical culture. In comparison with Western methods, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) adopts a vastly different approach. For thousands of years, Chinese people have accumulated rich experience in fighting all sorts of diseases, therefore forming a unique medical theory under the guidance of ancient Chinese philosophies (哲学).

The core behind TCM is that the human body's life is the consequence (结果) of the balance between Yin and Yang. Yang functions to safeguard us against outer harm, and Yin is the inner base to store and provide energy. When the balance between the two aspects is disturbed, people fall ill.

One of the traditional techniques of TCM, acupuncture (针刺疗法) means insertion of needles into superficial (表面的) structures of the body—usually at acupoints (穴位)—to restore the Yin Yang balance. It is often accompanied by moxibustion (艾灸疗法), which involves burning mugwort on or near the skin at an acupoint.

The first known text that clearly talks about something like acupuncture and moxibustion as it is practiced today is The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon. It is the earliest and most important written work of TCM and is considered the fundamental and most representative medical text in China.

Acupuncture and moxibustion have aroused the interest of international medical science circles. And TCM is gradually gaining worldwide recognition. The WHO issued a document in 2002 that appealed to more than 180 countries to adopt TCM as an alternative in their medical policies. In 2010, acupuncture and moxibustion of traditional Chinese medicine were added to the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by the UNESCO. Presently, TCM has been back in the news for its effectiveness in improving the cure rate of the COVID-19 since its outbreak in January 2020.

2. What can we learn about The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon from the text?
A.It distinguishes acupuncture from moxibustion.
B.It's a foundation of world medical research.
C.it stresses the importance of using acupoints.
D.It greatly contributes to the development of TCM.
3. Why does the writer write this text?
A.To review the development of TCM.B.To introduce TCM to the world.
C.To tell TCM and Western medicine apart.D.To argue for TCM in fighting COVID-19.
4. What might be talked about in the paragraph following the text?

3 . Modern buildings are set up on a large scale in the city. Should they be allowed to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. All historical buildings are not attractive. However, there may be other reasons — for example, economic reasons — why they should be preserved. So, let us assume that historical buildings are both attractive and important to be the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style. Indeed, there are many examples in my hometown where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old ones too. Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas. I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative (保守的)and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people's feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves. Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

1. What is the author's view of historical buildings in Paragraph 1?
A.Some of them are unattractive.
B.Many of them are too old to preserve.
C.They don't offer the historic feel of an area.
D.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
2. Which of the following does the author mostly agree with?
A.We should reproduce the same old buildings.
B.Buildings shouldn't fit in with their surroundings.
C.Some old buildings have reduced the interest of the area they are in.
D.No one knows why people are against new buildings.
3. The underlined words “move things forward” mean _______.
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.respect people's feelings
D.choose new architectural style
4. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To answer the questions people show great interest in.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.

7 . As more Europeans arrived in America 500 years ago, they were in such great need of the land that they and the Native American Indians battled constantly. By the end of the 19th century, most Indian tribes (部落) were moved to reservations. A lot of their children were taken away to boarding schools to learn to speak English. By the end of the 20th century, more than half of the Native Americans in the US were living in the cities. They gave up speaking their old tribal language and only used English. As a result, many Native American languages disappeared and with that their culture.

Today some American Indian languages are usually spoken by the older members of the tribes who still live on the reservations. In North America there are 150-170 languages that have at least one speaker. One ancient language spoken by the Northern Paiute tribe has over 100 speakers.

But the good news is that some of these people are keeping their culture and language alive. They are also receiving help from the National Geographic Society’s Enduring Voices project, whose aim is to help languages around the world which are dying out. The team meets these “last speakers”. The experts interview them and they are recorded with video, pictures and so on. They also tell old stories which are written down in English so people can learn more about the cultures.

Recording the language and culture is only part of the project. The next stage is to pass on the language to the next generation. The Salish tribe is an excellent example of how schools can help. The tribe lives on the Flathead Indian Reservation in Montana. Their language is spoken by about 50 people aged over 75. So now, the local people have set up a school. It has 30 students aged two to twelve during the day and there are also courses for adults in the evening.

1. Why did Europeans fight with the American Indians?
A.To live in American citiesB.To occupy more living space
C.To have Indians speak EnglishD.To make Indian cultures disappear
2. What does the underlined word “They” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.The expertsB.The recordings
C.The Indian culturesD.The last speakers
3. What can we know about the Salish tribe?
A.It has its own language school.B.It has given up speaking English.
C.Its next generation speaks English.D.Its language is only learnt by adults.
4. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Learning American Indian Languages
B.Researching on American Indian Languages
C.Saving American Indian Languages
D.Finding Lost American Indian Languages

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。本文主要介绍了中国传统文化的二十四节气在2016年入选了世界非物质文化遗产目录。

9 . China has more than 30 intangible cultural heritage(非物质文化遗产) recognized by the UNESCO, including paper-cutting, the Dragon Boat Festival, Peking Opera, acupuncture(针灸) and so on. The organization adopted a decision that China’s “The Twenty-Four Solar Terms”(二十四节气) should be put on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016 in Ethiopia.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms, knowledge of time and practices in agriculture, starts from the beginning of Spring and ends with the Greater Cold, moving in cycles. It developed through the observation of the sun’s annual movement in China. In ancient time, the method of tugui, earth sundial(日暑), was used to measure the shadow of the sun for determining the solar terms.

The Twenty-Four Solar Terms came into being and developed in close relationship with Chinese agricultural production. At the initial(最初的) stage of agricultural development, people began to explore the seasonal rules in the agricultural production to meet the needs in seeding, harvesting and other activities. Gradually, they formed the concept of “seed in spring, grow in summer, harvest in autumn and store in winter”. During the spring and autumn periods, the agricultural production was highly influenced by the seasonal changes, thus forming the concept of Solar Terms.

As a traditional Chinese knowledge system of time with a history of thousands of years, the Twenty-Four Solar Terms clearly expresses the concepts of respect for nature, and harmony between man and nature. Created by Chinese ancestors, it has functioned as a complete set of weather calendar(日历) to guide the agricultural production in China. It has also been introduced into North Korea, Japan and other neighboring countries and still used in Japan. The Chinese heritage has provably influenced the people’s way of thinking and behaving and will continue to be an important carrier of Chinese cultural identity.

1. According to the first two paragraphs, the Twenty-Four Solar Terms______.
A.was used to measure the shadow of the sun
B.has not been listed as one intangible cultural heritage of humanity
C.repeats from the Beginning of Spring to the Greater Cold every year
D.is the best intangible cultural heritage recognized by the UNESCO
2. We can learn from the text that _______ in China in the past.
A.the Twenty-Four Solar Terms only influenced spring and autumn
B.the Twenty-Four Solar Terms had something to do with agriculture
C.people cared about the changes of weather just for fun
D.agricultural production highly influenced the seasonal changes
3. We can infer from the text that the Twenty-Four Solar Terms _______.
A.is an agricultural calendar merely used in China
B.is strongly influenced by North Korea and Japan
C.is scarcely connected with natural rules
D.is part of traditional Chinese culture

10 . I wish there would be a way to describe China in simple terms but that’s impossible. For the most part, Chinese people are friendly, easy-going and optimistic. They are curious and unusually patient and they are also the hardest-working people I have ever met.
In China, family is everything. In my English classes when the students were asked what they would do if they only had a few hours to live, most students told me how they would spend their last few hours with their families and parents. Many times the subjects in the classes center on families and friends. I teach many students a year, talking to them freely.
The cost of living here is very low compared with that of the US. The city of Xiang Fan I live in isn’t large and I live better. Non-imported(非出口的) foods are very cheap, so are clothing and articles of everyday use. The cost of public transportation is very low, too. Chinese value education. However, it is reported that many children can’t afford the expenses of schooling and are forced to leave school in some poor areas in China. But they organized Project Hope many years ago. It creates conditions for the poor children to go back to school. In my opinion, Project Hope is of great importance to the development of the rural education.
When we read news of China in the west, rarely, if ever, will we see anything mentioned of the positive changes China has gone through. While it is true that economic miracles have not reached many areas of China, but we also have the same problems.
When I am asked which country I consider better. China or the US, my answer has always been the same, “We are not worse or better than each other, we are only different.”

A.Imported foods
B.Local foods
C.Public transportation tickets.

A.the westerners have got to know China well
B.China’s economic miracles have appeared everywhere
C.the education in rural areas is never cared about in China
D.the progress of China is seldom reported in the US
