5 . Norwegians would perhaps highlight their custom of “gå på tur”— going on a journey on foot or on skis. In Denmark, everyone knows what “hygge” is — to freely enjoy the good life with the people you love. They’re the issues of “intangible cultural heritage”, things that cannot be physically touched such as traditions, stories, music, dance and craft skills.

In 2003, UNESCO, the education, science and culture organization of the United Nations, adopted an agreement to “preserve the intangible” and many developing-world countries were quick to get their traditions included on the official list. But it would take almost 10 years for “Agreement for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage” to be approved by the Scandinavian countries.

Annika Sjöberg is responsible for managing the work of the agency in Sweden. She has been, and continues to be, flooded with suggestions of intangible cultural heritage worthy of protection, submitted by committed citizens and organizations wanting to see their particular traditions included on the list that should be ready sometime in the next couple of years.

Suggestions have also been received concerning various maritime traditions: old shipwright skills such as the building of wooden hulled vessels, are in decline and at risk of being lost forever.

“Our work has attracted considerable attention as it is regarded as being a little out in left field,” says Sjöberg. “In addition, it’s also opened people’s eyes to the fact that the things we can’t physically touch indeed have a major bearing on the way in which we live. Even in an urbanized society, there is knowledge we carry with us that we’ve inherited from previous generations-knowledge that’s important to preserve and take care of.”

Sjöberg explains that the point is not to preserve this cultural heritage in a stony rigid form, as traditions must be allowed to change and evolve. She also emphasizes that her work should not be interpreted as a nationalistic project, rather as a means of multicultural spreading.

It’s actually a matter of documenting the knowledge that exists in the various traditions. What is most exciting is the diversity that now exists and the ways in which different cultures interact with each other.

1. Why are “gå på tur” and “hygge” mentioned at the beginning of the text?
A.To remind people to enjoy a healthy lifestyle.
B.To introduce the main topic of the text.
C.To appeal to the world to mind physical cultures.
D.To highlight how special the northern European countries are.
2. How should a tradition be included on the official list?
A.Date back to 2003.B.Last for ten years old.
C.Meet the agreements of UNESCO.D.Be in the developing country.
3. What do we know about Annika Sjöberg?
A.She is working for the UNESCO agency in Switzerland.
B.She monitors the protection of physical cultural heritage.
C.She tries her best to restore the world-wide particular traditions.
D.She has been managing the cases of the intangible cultural heritage.
4. What does the text mainly talk about?
A.Creation of the UNESCO.
B.Annika Sjöberg’s daily routine.
C.Intangible cultural heritage of UNESCO.
D.Safeguarding the cultures of the Scandinavian countries.

文章大意:这是一篇新闻报道。文章介绍了苏州家具展览——榫卯里的东方智慧。

6 . Classical Chinese furniture — a desk, a cabinet or any other fine piece of furniture and often out of precious wood —impresses us with its delicate shape. The secret of its graceful form is less visible and lies in its complicated sunmao (榫卯) system, which allows the various components to be assembled neatly without glue or nails.

Suzhou, a scenic and peaceful city in Jiangsu, a province long known for its wealth, developed its own tradition of classical furniture design over the centuries. Examples of the Suzhou-style furniture are currently on display as part of Oriental Wisdom in Sun Mao, a group exhibition at the Prince Kung’s Palace Museum in Beijing.

Running until Sunday, the show demonstrates the way that the complex sunmao technique has been used in making furniture, as well as the variations that developed in different parts of the country. Also on display are models of different kinds, as well as the components of two chairs, which are disassembled and laid out to give museum goers a clear view of the inner structure of classical furniture.

The Suzhou style flowered during the Ming Dynasty(1368-1644), and once dominated the market in Jiangnan, the southern region along the lower reaches of the Yangtze River. It integrated input from the intellectual class, who put their ideals regarding living spaces and spiritual harbors into its design. According to Xu Jianping, one of the inheritors of classical furniture design in the city, the Suzhou style presents beauty in the same delicate way the city does, and represents the life philosophy of its people to achieve “refinement through careful calculations”.

Guangzhou style furniture is normally made out of tropical hardwood, and its forms and decorative patterns show the influence of European furniture styles resulting from Guangzhou’s history as an international trade port. The Beijing style, which is more splendid, incorporates aesthetic (美学) and stylistic elements from both Suzhou and Guangzhou.

“While the Suzhou style is light in weight and elegant in outline, furniture in the Beijing style is more magnificent, as it used to be made for royalty and aristocracy.” Xu says. “Ultimately, people live with their furniture, so the principle of quality furniture is that it should be appropriate to the space.”

1. What is on display in the exhibition?
A.The lifestyle in Sunzhou.B.The modern furniture in Suzhou.
C.The secret of sunmao system.D.The classical furniture in China.
2. What does the underlined word ”disassembled“ in paragraph 3 mean?
A.taken apartB.broken upC.torn downD.given away
3. What is paragraph 4 of the text mainly about?
A.The beauty of the delicate city.B.The development of the Suzhou Style.
C.The influence of historical design ideas.D.The formation of the Suzhou life philosophy.
4. Why did the author mention Guangzhou and Beijing style furniture?
A.To compare their differences.B.To evaluate the usage of furniture.
C.To express the way to display furniture.D.To illustrate the theory of furniture design.

7 . In America, we have a thing called stand-up comedy. This popular form of entertainment consists of a comedian standing up at the front of a club, holding a microphone, and telling jokes. Of course, comedy is popular in Chinese culture as well, but the performances are quite different from the style in the US. In China, it’s called cross-talk, which usually involves two guys engaging in an entertaining dialogue.

It’s believed that cross-talk came into being in the Qing Dynasty as a bit of a by-product of the imitation shows that were a popular form of entertainment in the Song Dynasty. After the PRC was established in 1949, this comedic art became more and more popular. Today, it’s still heavily featured in the CCTV New Year’s Gala programmes in China. The 1990s was the golden age of cross-talk; even foreigners studied the art of cross-talk. Mark Roswell, a Canadian named Da Shan in Chinese was relatively unknown in his native land but was a superstar in China. At the turn of the century, cross-talk began to decline, and many well-known actors left the stage.

There are four skills that are essential in cross-talk: speaking, imitating, teasing, and singing. Most of the time, it is performed with two actors—one serves as the lead actor while the other plays a support role. However, sometimes it is performed simply as a one-man show, and at other times there are several actors. In order to criticize something, the humor involved in cross-talk is satirical.

1. What’s the difference between American stand-up comedy and Chinese cross-talk?
A.Chinese cross-talk actors don’t use a microphone.
B.American stand-up comedy actors are all men.
C.Chinese cross-talk is more liked by Canadians.
D.American stand-up comedy is only a one-man show.
2. Which word can best summarize Paragraph 2?

B.He was very popular with Canadians.
C.He was a famous cross-talker in China.
D.He left the stage in the early 1990s.
4. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “satirical” in Paragraph 3?

文章大意:本文是一篇说明文。文章简要介绍了茶具的演进。

10 . In China, tea has become an important part of everyday life for thousands of years. As the tea-processing methods and tea culture have evolved over the years, tea sets have also changed to meet the practical and cultural needs.

During the Tang Dynasty(618~907AD), tea leaves were traded across the country and Asia. For the convenience of transportation and storage, tea leaves were pressed into bricks. To prepare tea, drinkers had to cut them into small pieces and boil them in heat-resistant teapots.

By the Song Dynasty(960-1279), drinkers started to turn the hard bricks into powders (粉末) that could be whipped (搅打) in a cup with boiled water. This whipped tea is most commonly associated with Japanese tea ceremonies today.

By the 1500s, tea bricks gave way to the form of rolled leaves. This innovation led to the invention and use of teapots as we know them today. These teapots originally came from the Yi Xing region of China and were soon copied throughout the world. Then Japanese teapot-makers moved the handle from the side to the top of the teapots.

Tea finally reached Europe in the 1600s, along with the necessary tea sets made in Japan and China. As English teapot-makers began to adapt the tea sets to their country men’s tastes, they eventually added a handle to the tea bowl because of the English habit of drinking hot black tea, which was consumed at higher temperatures. The size of teacups also grew to accommodate milk and sugar in their tea.

By the early 1900s, innovations in tea drinking became an American affair. The most revolutionary one was the tea bag, which was accidentally commercialized by Thomas Sullivan. He had been sending customers tea wrapped in silk bags. Rather than take the leaves out of the bags, as Sullivan intended, the customers put the bags into their teapots instead. Not only did the tea bags push the teapot back to the sidelines of tea service, they were also too large for teacups and led to the modern practice of drinking tea from mugs.

1. Which was used to make the whipped tea in Japan?
A.Rolled tea leaves.B.Freshly picked tea leaves.
C.Powdered tea leaves.D.Loosely pressed tea leaves.
2. Which innovation was first introduced by the British?
A.Tea bags and mugs.B.Tea bowls with handles.
C.Heat-resistant teapots.D.Teapots with top handles.
3. What can we learn from Thomas Sullivan’s story?
A.Customers are very creative.B.Innovations are relatively easy.
C.Marketing strategy is critical.D.Good ideas can be born by accident.
4. What is the best title for the text?
A.The Development of Tea SetsB.Varieties of Tea Leaves
