1 . Good manners are always good manners. That’s what I thought until I married Alexander, who is Russian.

When I first met Alexander and he said to me in Russian, “Nalei mnye chai—pour me some tea”, I got angry and answered, “Pour it yourself.” Translated into English, without a “Could you..?” or a “please”, it sounded really rude to me. But in Russian it was fine—you don’t have to add any polite words.

However, when I took Alexander home to meet my parents in the UK, I had to give him a good lesson about pleases and thank you (which he thought were completely unnecessary), and to teach him to say sorry if someone happened to step on his toes, and to smile, smile, smile.

Another thing that Alexander just couldn’t understand was why people say things like “Would you mind passing me the salt, please?” He said, “It’s only the salt, for God’s sake! What do you say in English if you want a real favour?”

He also watched in amazement when, at a dinner party in England, we swallowed some really disgusting food and I said, “Mmmm...delicious.” In Russia, people are much more direct. The first time Alexander’s mother came to our house for dinner in Moscow, she told me that my soup needed more flavouring. Afterwards, when we argued about it, my husband said, “Do you prefer your dinner guests to lie?”

Alexander complained that in England he felt like an idiot because in Russia if you smile all the time people think you are mad. In fact, this is exactly what my husband’s friends thought of me the first time I went to Russia because I smiled at everyone, and always said “please” and “thank you” in Russian.

At home we now have an agreement. If we’re speaking Russian, he can say “Pour me some tea”, and just make a noise like a grunt (咕哝声) when I give it to him. But when we’re speaking English, he has to add a “please”, a “thank you”, and a smile.

1. What can we know from what Alexander said?
A.He didn’t think politeness was necessary.
B.He didn’t like the writer’s politeness.
C.He wasn’t used to the English politeness.
D.He wasn’t willing to have good manners.
2. What did Alexander’s friends think of the author when they first met her?
A.She was noble.B.She was strange.
C.She was lovely.D.She was impolite.
3. What can we tell from their agreement?
A.They respect each other.B.They change a lot for each other.
C.They learn from each other.D.They fail to fit in with each other.
4. What topic is the text mainly about?
A.Good manners.B.Human relations.
C.Culture shock.D.Mixed marriages.

6 . An 85-year-old building, the Lagena Primary School has been lifted off the ground—in its entirety—and relocated using new technology called the “walking machine”. In the city’s latest effort to preserve historic structures, engineers attached nearly 200 mobile supports under the five-storey building, according to Lan Wuji, chief technical supervisor of the project. The supports act like robotic legs. They’re split into two groups which take turns to rise up and down, imitating(模仿) the human walking. Attached sensors help control how the building moves forward, Lan said, whose company Shanghai

Evolution Shift developed the new technology in 2018. “It’s like giving the building crutches(拐杖) so it can stand up and then walk,” he said. Built in 1935, the school was moved in order to make space for a new commercial and office complex (建筑群), which will be completed by 2023.

The relocation was completed on October 15 last year with the old school building set to become a center for heritage protection and cultural education. The project marked the first time this “walking machine” method has been used in Shanghai to relocate a historical building.

There are a few ways to go about moving a building. But the Lagena Primary School, which weighs 7,600 tons, created a new challenge—it’s T-shaped. The irregular shape meant that traditional methods of pulling or sliding may not have worked. Experts and technicians met to discuss possibilities and test a number of different technologies before deciding on the “walking machine”. Lan said that he couldn’t share the exact cost of the project, and that relocation costs will differ case by case. “But in general, it’s cheaper than demolishing and then rebuilding something in a new location.”

1. What can we know about the Lagena Primary School?
A.It was relocated in 2018.
B.It was built in the 1930s.
C.It was designed by Lan Wuji.
D.It was lifted off the ground partly.
2. What was used to move the school?
A.Mobile supports.
B.Robotic arms.
C.Pulling vehicles.
D.Sliding machines.
3. Why was the school moved away?
A.To protect it in a better way.
B.To test the walking machine.
C.To make space for a modern school.
D.To make room for commercial buildings.
4. What does the underlined word “demolishing” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Refusing.B.Charging.C.Destroying.D.Defeating.

7 . “Happy New Year!” Everyone will greet each other with these words as they meet over the next couple of weeks. But it wasn’t always January l that marked the New Year.

At least 4,000 years ago the ancient Egyptians and Babylonians marked the changing of the year. In Egypt, the year started when the Nile River flooded, enriching farmers’ fields with silt. This happened at the end of September.

The Babylonians held a festival in spring, on March 23, to kick off the next farming cycle. The Babylonian celebration lasted for 11 days.

The date January l was picked by the Roman Emperor Julius Caesar as the change of the year when he established his own calendar in 46 BC. The month of January was named after the Roman god, Janus. He is pictured with two heads. One head looks forward and the other back. They represent a break between the old and new. That new calendar was in time with the sun and it has been used until the present day.

Around the world, different cultures have their own traditions for welcoming the New Year. The Japanese hang straw rope across the front of their houses to keep out evil spirits and bring happiness and good luck. They also have a good laugh as the year begins to get things started on a lucky note.

In India people like to wear pink, red ,purple and white flowers. Women favor yellow, the color of spring. Hindus also leave shrines next to their beds so they see beautiful objects when they wake up.

Canadians enjoy the traditional polar bear swim. People of all ages put on their swimsuits and jump into frozen lakes.

1. Which ancient country has a great effect on the New Year we are celebrating now?
A.Egypt. B.Rome. C.Babylon. D.India.
2. What’s the main idea of the last three paragraphs?
A.In different countries people celebrate the New Year in different ways
B.People in different countries celebrate the New Year in different times of the year.

8 . Should we allow modern buildings to be built next to older buildings in a historic area of a city? In order to answer this question, we must first examine whether people really want to preserve the historic feel of an area. Not all historical buildings are attractive. However, there may be other reasons—for example, economic reasons—why they should be preserved. So, let us assume(假设) that historical buildings are both attractive and important to the majority of people. What should we do then if a new building is needed?

In my view, new architectural styles can exist perfectly well alongside an older style.Indeed, there are many examples in my own hometown of Tours where modern designs have been placed very successfully next to old buildings. As long as the building in question is pleasing and does not dominate(影响) its surroundings too much, it often improves the attractiveness of the area.

It is true that there are examples of new buildings which have spoilt(破坏) the area they are in, but the same can be said of some old buildings too.Yet people still speak against new buildings in historic areas.I think this is simply because people are naturally conservative(保守的) and do not like change.

Although we have to respect people’s feelings as fellow users of the buildings, I believe that it is the duty of the architect and planner to move things forward. If we always reproduced what was there before, we would all still be living in caves .Thus, I would argue against copying previous architectural styles and choose something fresh and different, even though that might be the more risky choice.

1. What does the author say about historical buildings in the first paragraph?
A.Some of them are not attractive.
B.Most of them are too expensive to preserve.
C.They are more pleasing than modern buildings.
D.They have nothing to do with the historic feel of an area.
2. By “move things forward” in the last paragraph , the author probably means“_________”.
A.destroy old buildings
B.put things in a different place
C.choose new architectural styles
D.respect people's feelings for historical buildings
3. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To explain why people dislike change.
B.To warn that we could end up living in caves.
C.To admit how new buildings have ruined their surroundings.
D.To argue that modern buildings can be built in historic areas.
