Right now, most people's attention is on the COVID﹣19 pandemic. In     1    way, this pandemic is also warning us to protect our planet Earth.

World Earth Day, the international movement aiming     2    protecting and improving Earth's environment, is celebrating its 50th anniversary on April 22. For Earth Day 2020, the theme is climate action.    3    (celebrate) this, the Earth Day Network organized the Great Global Clean﹣up event. The network hoped that this would be the largest volunteer event in history, with people from all over the world    4    (set) up events to remove billions of pieces of trash from green spaces, urban communities and waterways. But due to the current ban on public gatherings and lockdown measures in many affected countries, clean﹣up events     5    (postpone).

That said, the occasion will still continue in a digital way. "    6    it be coronavirus or our global climate crisis, we cannot shut down.    7    , we must shift our energies and efforts to new ways to mobilize (动员) the world to action. " said Earth Day Network President Kathleen Rogers.

While the event may not reach its originally     8    (plan) grandeur(宏大), Earth Day 2020 could play a role in helping us sustain     9    (environment) friendly changes, such as practices like teleworking and video conferencing     10    have become more prevalent (普遍的) in this time.

Different countries have wildly different forms of greeting.

In the USA, when you pass by someone you know, a nod is acceptable, and you usually shake hands with someone you first meet. But in Latin countries, a firm handshake    1    (consider) rude. In my home country, Mauritius, when people meet, they usually kiss each other     2     the cheeks. This is also common in France,     3     the act is called faire la bise. However, this is not     4    universal rule.

During my first week in the USA, I kissed every single girl I met. My friends had to tell me that that was inappropriate,    5    (leave) me in great embarrassment. What is common here, however, is for friends    6    (hug) each other – something I was not used to. Hugs always make me     7    (frighten) because I don’t really like that. This may seem strange since even kissing     8    (stranger) is normal in my country. Now that I think about it, I hate cheek-kissing as well.

Wouldn’t it be     9    (enjoy) to have a greeting code that is     10    (wide) acceptable? I’m not saying we should start doing that, but we can surely do something to avoid misunderstanding.

3 . Our culture is the system we use to build our identity. All living things are part of a culture. Even animals have a culture! So what is culture? It's the way we behave in a group. It begins with each individual (单个的) family. Within our families we do things to build relationships with each other. This can include routines like daily housework and weekly shopping. It also includes traditions. Traditions are activities that are repeated on a regular basis.

Culture is not limited to individual family groups. The real strength of culture is in larger community groups. These larger groups are called societies. Every society makes rules for itself. It decides how people should act in different situations. Some of these rules are written down. Some are just things that are naturally expected of all members of that society.

Often, cultures can be recognized by what the people believe. Cultures are also known by what they choose to include in their art. Sometimes cultures may be formed by people who speak the same language. Cultures may also be known for their customs, including the foods they make and the things they do.

Our cultures help us understand who we are and what we believe. There are very strong feelings connecting us to our own society. Two different cultures may disagree on something, especially if they both feel strongly about it. When that happens, war is a common result.

People are learning better ways to communicate with each other. The more we communicate, the more we appreciate the differences in cultures.

4 . Mahatma Gandhi once said, “The greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animals are treated.”

There is no doubt that China is a country with high moral values. It has never attacked another country, has one of the lowest rates of violent crimes and is deeply concerned with the social and economic welfare of its people.

But when it comes to animal rights, China may well fail Gandhi test. There are no laws against the killing of dogs and the sale of dog meat in China. In fact the serving of dog meat in Chinese restaurants has increased in recent years.

People who eat dog meat argue that dogs have been eaten in China for thousand of years and dog meat has “health benefits”.

There is, however, a strong argument against waiting dogs. Recently, some Chinese animal rights activists stopped a truck carrying about 500 dogs and saved the poor animals from being sold and served as food in restaurants. These people that dogs             are not meant to be eaten but loved.
