Now, China wants to transform that online     2     (popular) into real-life tourism. “As the Chinese ‘Dead Sea’, floating here is     3     unforgettable experience, and one you can’t find anywhere else,” reads a tourism advertisement     4     (sponsor) by the Yuncheng Salt Lake Tourism Development Company. Yuncheng Salt Lake is a sulfate (硫酸盐) lake. “If the sulfate in your water is greater than the calcium (钙), all the calcium is used up,     5     leaves you with large amounts of sulfate and you have a sulfate lake,” explains geography professor Bernie Owen. 5 . Explore China’s Ancient Water Towns

Nanxun

This water town typically draws smaller crowds. The architecture is a unique mix of traditional Chinese and Western styles. As you walk along the ancient canals, you’re likely to see locals playing cards or having tea outdoors. The town dates back to the Chunyou Period of the Song Dynasty, between the years of 1241 to 1252. Today, it’s considered to be the best destination for weddings.

Tongli

Tongli is considered a mini Venice, with nearly every building on or by a canal. The town itself is composed of seven small islands, separated by 15 canals and joined by more than 40 bridges—plus, five lakes surround the town itself. Tongli is more than 1,000 years old, and the oldest bridge in the town dates back to the Song Dynasty, which began in the year 960. Visitors here should check out the wedding museum, which has antique Chinese wedding clothes and items on display.

Zhouzhuang

This is the most famous and most commercialized ancient water town in China. The architecture here dates back more than 900 years, with about 60 original brick archways and 100 original courtyards. More recently, a tower called Quanfu Temple was built in 1987. Climb to the top to get the best view of the ancient town. Or for a more authentic experience, visit Chengxu Taoist Temple, which was built between 1086 and 1093. It’s one of the most famous Taoist temples in the area.

Xitang

Xitang separates itself from other water towns with sheltered waterside streets, allowing locals and guests to comfortably walk alongside the canals even during the rainy season. Thanks to a less commercial atmosphere, visitors will be rewarded with opportunities that aren’t likely to be found in other water towns-like fishing with locals on the canals and having dinner on a boat. Xitang is truly ancient, dating back to the Warring States Period of 476 BC to 221 BC.

8 . Free Museums in London

With free museums, families can visit more than once. For big museums, e.g. British Museum, don’t try to see everything in one go. First visit, take a couple of hours to explore with kids, get familiar with the museum layout, and then return another day to see another part of the museum.

British Museum

The British Museum has on display fabulous goodies from the ancient world—Assyria, Mesopotamia, Egypt, Greece and Rome, plus prehistoric Europe. The “biggies” from ancient Greece are Parthenon sculptures—marble of horsemen, musicians, animals, elders, Greek gods. Don’t miss Assyrian reliefs and winged bulls, Sutton Hoo treasure with golden helmets and swords of 7th century Anglo-Saxon kings, and Egyptian mummies and colossal statues.

Science Museum

Explore galleries chock full of British airplanes, lunar spacecraft and full-size rockets, and early 19th century steam locomotives(车头) built in England—Stephenson’s Rocket and Puffing Billy. Also look for paintings by British artists—Thomas Gainsborough (super family portraits), J.M.W. Turner, George Stubbs (famous for his horse paintings).

Natural History Museum

The British are famous for their nature explorers—Charles Darwin, David Livingstone, Robert Scott, Captain Cook. This is a wide-ranging museum of the natural world including gold nuggets from Australia, emeralds, meteorites, fossils from Britain, extinct birds such as the dodo bird and saber-tooth cat, and large dinosaur gallery.

9 . Classic Tuscany from £250

Tuscany’s towns, villages and terroirs have inspired generations of painters and poets, travel writers and winemakers.

It’s easy to spend a lot of money in Tuscany. A couple of nights at the Villa Cora or St Regis in Florence and some Michelin-star food, and a couple can eat their way through £1,000 in a weekend. But Tuscany is not huge and there are good trains and buses between towns. Outside the historic centers you’ll find two- and three-star hotels that are very serviceable, and locals know how to eat very well indeed without being highly charged.

Top tip

State-run museums and archaeological sites are free on the first Sunday of the month. If you are on an art-heavy tour, pick up a Firenze Card. It costs £72 and covers the major museums, including the Uffizi and Accademia. You can jump queues and don’t need a reservation.

When to go

Any time except high summer is good. Museums and galleries, as well as hotels and trains, see major demand in July and August. If your main interests are cultural, consider a winter holiday. It will be cool, but even in January and February snow is so rare in the hills as to be positively exciting.

Do it yourself

Fly from Gatwick to Florence from £91 return in October. The best route goes by train from Florence to Siena (1.5 hours, £8), Siena to Empoli (1 hour, £6), Empoli to Pisa (30 mins, £5) and back to Florence (50 mins, £7.30).

Book via trenitalia.com. Plushotels (plushotels.com/en/florence) has rooms in Florence from £23 per night. In Siena and Pisa you can get B&B for around £40 and in Empoli for around £30.

1. What does the text suggest to save money according to Paragraph 2?
A.Dining in Michelin-star restaurants.
B.Spending a couple of nights at the Vila Cora or St Regis.
C.Staying a bit far away from historic centers for the night.
D.Avoiding public transportation service.
2. What can we learn about travelling in Tuscany?
A.Most museums are free of charge.
B.There are more visitors in summer.
C.A reservation is highly recommended.
D.You need queue up to visit the museum.
3. How much do you have to pay in total for the train rides if you follow the recommended route?
A.£26.3.B.£52.6.C.£91.D.£133.
