文章大意:本文为一篇应用文。本文主要介绍了四个被列入了世界文化遗产名录且对人类历史和文化特别重要的文化遗址。

2 . Up to now, UNESCO has granted official recognition to over 800 cultural sites that are thought to be specially significant to human history and culture. Among them are the following four.

The Taj Mahal

It was built between 1631 and 1648, known as a masterpiece of architecture. It took over 20,000 workers and 1,000 elephants to complete the project. In the early 17th century, an emperor named Shah Jahan ruled India. The emperor loved his wife Mumtaz so much that when she died, he built the Taj Mahal in her memory. The beautiful mausoleum (陵墓) was designed to look like what the emperor hoped would be Mumtaz’s home in the afterlife.

The Temple and Mansion of Confucius

Located in Qufu, Shandong Province, the temple is a memorial to Confucius, the Chinese great educator. On the grounds, there are more than 900 halls and rooms. But the building that people visit most is the Temple of Confucius. Originally built in 478 BC, the temple has been rebuilt many times. Besides the temple, visitors can enjoy the grounds outside, where there are more than 1,000 stone tablets (碑碣) and over 100, 000 tombs.

Built by several emperors between 1368 and 1915 in Beijing, Hubei, Hebei and Liaoning, the Imperial Tombs represent Chinese cultural and historical values that have been handed down from generation to generation for thousands of years. What makes them unique even among amazing buildings such as Angkor Wat (吴哥窟) and the Cologne Cathedral (科隆大教堂) is that they bring together architecture and philosophy.

The Terracotta Army

In 1974, while some Chinese farmers were digging a well, they accidentally found a tomb, where they found more than 8,000 statues. They were said to be made in the third century BC to guard the tomb of the Chinese Emperor Qinshihuang! More than 700,000 people worked for nearly 40 years to build this tomb! 3 . Did you watch the popular TV series Meet Yourself (《去有风的地方》) during your winter vacation? In the TV series, the heroine Xu Hongdou travels to a village in Yunnan province and volunteers at a local cafe. She gets free meals in return. As the show finds a growing audience, volunteer travel — an old-yet-modern form of travel similar to Xu’s type of work — has attracted more attention.

Volunteer travel refers to taking a trip where all or part of the purpose of the trip is to participate in an arranged service opportunity to help others, according to Wise Tour, an online provider of tourist information.

It seems as if these long journeys could only be made possible in recent years by modern transportation. Nevertheless, volunteer travel dates back to the 1960s, when Alec Dickson and his wife Mora from the UK founded Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO), an international volunteer organization.

Traditionally, the volunteer activities take place in a foreign country. However, just as what Meet Yourself depicts, more volunteer trips have taken place within the same countries or regions the volunteers originate from in recent years. Sanlian Lifeweek magazine commented that volunteer projects in rural areas are now attracting more urban visitors as a break from the fast and stressful pace of urban living. Yang Yan, a founder of a volunteer platform, told the magazine that it has indeed been a growing trend for urban residents to volunteer in rural areas.

People try volunteer travel for several reasons. By working voluntarily while traveling, travelers may make a real, positive impact on the world. The services volunteers provide can be through charities with lower costs for the communities they serve. Another benefit of volunteer travel is that it helps urban dwellers (居民) to get a taste of rural life. For those who are sick of urban pressure but can’t make up their minds whether to move permanently to the countryside, volunteer travel can be a solution.

1. Why does the author mention Meet Yourself in the beginning of the article?
A.To introduce a new way of travel.B.To raise readers’ interest in the TV series.
C.To lead up to the topic — volunteer travel.D.To show the popularity of this TV series.
2. What does the article tell us about volunteer travel?
A.It dates back to the 19th century in the UK.
B.Travelers can earn money on their trips.
C.It requires travelers to be highly educated.
D.It combines travel with meaningful work to help others.
3. What does the underlined word “depicts” mean in the fourth paragraph?
A.describesB.advocatesC.generalizesD.comments
4. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.A new trend of volunteer trips.B.Different reasons for volunteer trips.
C.The significance of volunteer trips.D.The current development of volunteer trips.

5 . Philadelphia is a city known for many things. It is where the Declaration of Independence was signed in 1776, and it was also the first capital of the United States.     1     It is home to nearly 3,000 murals (壁画) painted on the side of homes and buildings around the city. That’s more murals than any other city on Earth.     2

More than 20 years ago, a New Jersey artist named Jane Golden started a program pairing troubled youth with artists to paint murals on a few buildings around the city.     3    The teenagers involved helped to create magnificent pieces of art, and there were other, even more important, benefits. The young people learned to cooperate and get along with many different kinds of people during the painting. They learned to be responsible, because they needed to follow a schedule to make sure the murals were completed.     4    It is hard for anyone to see the spectacular designs and not feel proud to be a part of Philadelphia.

Take a walk around some of the poorest neighborhoods in Philadelphia and you will find beautiful works of art on the sides and fronts of buildings. Of course the murals are not just in poor neighborhoods, but richer ones as well. Special buses take tourists to different parts of the city to see the various murals, which show the diverse ethnic groups that call Philadelphia home.

5     It is also a model for other cities throughout America seeking to help troubled youth.

文章大意:这是一篇应用文。文章主要介绍了四个可以观看圣诞节节日彩灯的地方。

Oxford Street

Oxford Street’s festive lights are a treat for the eyes this year. However you’ll have to pick your hours carefully as the lights—which we returned on at the start of November—are only on for eight hours a day this year, from 3-11 pm, in the wake of the rising energy costs the country is facing. It is expected this will reduce energy usage by up to two thirds compared to previous years, when the lights have been on for 24 hours through November and December.

Kew Garden

One of the most famous light paths of the season, Christmas at Kew offers a full-on festive experience with over 2 km of lights to walk through. Along the way you’ll have the chance to sample festive food and drink, and possibly even say hello to Santa himself.

Regent Street

Regent Street’s lights are on the theme of The Spirit Of Christmas this year, bringing golden angels to the shopping street. The lights, which cover Regent Street and the St James neighbourhoods, were turned on on November 9, and like the Oxford St lights are turned on between 3 and 11 pm.

Covent Garden

A visit to Covent Garden will certainly get you in the festive spirit this year, with the central London destination offering a whole lot of lights—from 11 am until midnight every day until January 3. Visitors can also enjoy daily snow showers as well as festive food treats and heated wine—with over 40 different varieties there.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。文章讲述了作者一家在泰国温馨又愉快的旅行经历。

9 . We travelled in Thailand. The staff at the hotels we stayed in went out of their way to make us feel welcome. You may say that they were just doing their jobs, but this is not how it felt to us. At the iuDia Hotel in Ayutthaya the staff went above and beyond what we would have expected. The dining room was not open in the evening and when we asked where we could get a takeaway meal the front desk girl walked us to the nearby restaurant. She explained that the hotel staff would provide us with plates and dishes once we returned. Not only did they provide what we needed, but they also put our food in servicing bowls and took care of the clean-up while we slept. We were grateful and deeply touched by their kindness and care.

For the rest of our visit to Thailand we stayed at the Novotel in Rangsit. Since we were there for a long period of time we became familiar with a few of the staff. They paid attention to our needs and did their best to ensure our stay was a pleasant one. They were also happy to stop and chat with us, asking questions about our stay, what we had done that day, recommending things for us to do and sharing parts of their personal lives with us.Again, it may be said that their friendliness was part of their job but somehow, I did not feel that was the case. It felt natural, open and honest and I would like to think that they enjoyed our conversations as much as we enjoyed theirs.

On one of our walks my brother and I were offered bottles of fresh water by one of the locals. She felt that we needed it and did not want to take payment for the two bottles she offered. She finally agreed to take 10 Thai bahts(泰铢). Instead we gave her 20.

1. Why does the author give the dining room as an example?
A.To tell us when the usual dinner starts in Thailand.
B.To explain how considerate the staff in the hotel are.
C.To tell us where to eat when the dining room is closed.
D.To show it is hard to get a takeaway meal in Thailand.
2. What can we know about the author from paragraph 2?
A.He tried to know more about life in Thailand.
B.He wanted to show what life he lived to the staff.
C.He was getting along well with the staff in the hotel.
D.He liked to know more about other people’s secrets.
3. Why did the author pay one of the locals 20 Thai bahts?
A.The author wanted to express gratitude.
B.The local asked the author for 20 Thai bahts.
C.The author didn’t take any change for the drink.
D.Each bottle of fresh water was worth 10 Thai bahts.
4. Which can best describe the author’s experience in Thailand?
