3 . Hotels often undergo makeovers. However, few can compete with the Ice hotel in Jukkasjãrvi, Sweden. Carved entirely from “Snice”—a mix of snow and ice—the hotel is rebuilt annually, with each version more impressive than the previous one. The 32nd Ice hotel was open to guests on April 17, 2022.

The must-visit Swedish tourist destination came about accidentally. In 1989, Ice hotel’s founder Yngve Berquist organized an art show to attract tourists to Jukkasjärvi during the chilly winter months. The exhibition, held inside a 5.5-square-metre igloo (冰屋), was a runaway (迅速的) success. Many visitors decided to spend the night, selling out all of Jukkasjärvi’s warm houses. Hence, when a group approached Berquist about a place to spend the night, he offered them the igloo. “To my surprise, the guests were very impressed by the experience the morning after. Ice hotel was born,” Berquist recalls.

The Ice hotel has come a long way since its humble (简陋的)start. Constructed from 1, 000 tons of ice, and 30,000 tons of “Snice”, it now covers an area of over 5, 500 square metres, Preparations for the annual hotel begin in March with the harvesting of 5,000 tons of ice from the nearby Torne River. The ice is kept in cold storage until November when about 100 workers and artists get to work carving out a new structure. Ice hotel is typically open for business by mid-December.

This year’s hotel comprises 36 rooms, including 12 crafted art suites (套间). Decorated with massive ice stones and carved water shapes, it aims to provide visitors with a good nature experience. The “Dickensian Street” suite promises to take visitors on a tour of 19th-century England, complete with cobbled (铺鹅卵石的) streets, shops, and buildings from the era. Guests are advised to stay inside thermal (保暖的) sleeping bags and wear gloves and winter hats all night. Not surprisingly, most move to the conventional, warmer cabins nearby after a single night.

6 . I’m studying English at a school in the UK at the moment and having a wonderful time, meeting new friends and getting to know the country. We have the chance to go on lots of trips and recently we visited the famous town of Stratford-upon-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare.     1     Our English teacher wanted us to do more than that.

Before we went, we prepared for the trip.     2     Some students did one on the environment, while another group wrote some questions about hobbies and interests. There were five groups altogether. I’m really interested in business studies and my group had questions to ask local businesspeople and shopkeepers.

We were there for the whole day and we all thought it would be best to do the research in the morning.     3     When we arrived in Stratford, each group went off around the town to ask local people their questions. It was really good fun. We had the chance to practice our English and the local people were very friendly and helpful. In fact, they told our teacher how polite they thought we all were.

Stratford is a lovely town and we spent the afternoon enjoying the sights. After lunch we looked around Holy Trinity Church, and of course we visited the house where the world’s most famous playwright was born and grew up.     4     I got home feeling tired but I had had a fantastic day out.

Besides being fun, it was a great way to practice our English, and not only because we were able to speak to local people.     5     We took it in turns to stand up and explain to the other groups what our questions were about and the things we found out. We all enjoyed it so much that we’re hoping to repeat it later in the year in a new location.

Potala Palace is a must-see in Lhasa.

Mount Everest, or Mount Qomolangma is the highest mountain on earth with an altitude of 8, 848 metres. Mt. Everest stands in southern Tibet, capped with accumulated lasting snow. Its snow peak sends out silver light year after year. Each year, a great number of brave strong mountaineers come to visit and climb Mt. Everest.

Jiuzhaigou Valley is located in the north of Sichuan Province. This land features permanently snow-capped mountain peaks, green forest, peaceful lakes, and various birds and animals. Upon entering the resort, you will find yourself walking slowly in a fairyland of colors. It is a world of water. Whether you are met with calm lakes or jumping waterfalls, you will enjoy yourself with no thoughts for home.

It’s almost time for me to say goodbye to Australia. I’ve enjoyed my time here very much. After being here for a while, my     1     (big) impression is the complicated mix of peoples and cultures     2     make up the nation. Although the main cultural influence since 1788     3     (be) Western culture, minority cultures have also played     4     part in shaping the unique Australian culture, with many of the new cultural influences     5     (contribute) by immigrants. It is said that now nearly half of all Australian citizens were either born overseas or have parents who were born overseas.

They have a straightforward and free-and-easy attitude     8     life, and their     9     (friendly) and warmth made me feel at home wherever I went.
