5 . I travel a lot, and I find out different “styles”(风格) of directions every time I ask “How can I get to the post office?”

Foreign tourists are often confused(困惑) in Japan because most streets there don’t have names; In Japan, people use landmarks(地标) in their directions instead of street names. For example, the Japanese will say to travelers, “Go straight down to the corner. Turn left at the big hotel and go past a fruit market. The post office is across from the bus stop.”

In the countryside of the American Midwest, there are not usually many landmarks. There are no mountains, so the land is very flat; in many places there are no towns or buildings within miles. Instead of landmarks, people will tell you directions and distances. In Kansas or Iowa, for example, people will say, “Go north two miles. Turn east, and then go another mile.”

People in Los Angeles, California, have no idea of distance on the map; they measure distance in time, not miles. “How far away is the post office?” you ask. “Oh,” they answer, “it’s about five minutes from here.” You say, “Yes, but how many miles away is it?” They don’t know.

It’s true that a person doesn’t know the answer to your question sometimes. What happens in such a situation? A New Yorker might say, “Sorry, I have no idea.” But in Yucatan, Mexico, no one answers “I don’t know.” People in Yucatan believe that “I don’t know” is impolite. They usually give an answer, often a wrong one. A tourist can get very, very lost in Yucatan!

On our way to the house, it was raining     1     hard that we couldn't help wondering how long     2     would take to get there. It was in the middle of Pearl City.

We were first greeted with the bark by a pack of dogs, seven to be exact. They were well trained by their masters     3     had great experience with caring for these animals. Our hosts shared many of their experiences and recommended wonderful places     4     (eat), shop, and visit. For breakfast, we were able to eat the papaya(木瓜) and other fruits from their trees in the backyard.

When they were free     5     work, they invited us to local events and let us know of an interesting     6     (compete), together with the story behind it. They also shared with us many     7     (tradition) stories about Hawaii that were hugely popular with tourists. On the last day of our weeklong stay, we     8     (invite) to attend a private concert on     9     beautiful farm on the North Shore under the stars,     10     (listen) to musicians and meeting interesting locals.

Sea Exploring!

The name brings back the memory of pirates (海盗) sailing the high seas of the past. This adventure is for larger teams of 18 to 20 teammates. 9 . As summer approaches, many kids and teenagers may find that they have more time in hand. One great way to make use of the extra time is to go on an adventure and travel. Clearly, I am not a naturally adventurous person, but I have found that taking risks and challenging myself to explore and travel to unfamiliar places can be a very rewarding experience.

Because I am usually quite busy during the school year, most of my travels take place during the summer. Over the past few summers, I have hiked in the Grand Canyon, explored Niagara Falls, and camped out in the countryside of New York. Although these experiences are varied, they are similar in that they instill a sense of appreciation for nature and a more balanced view on life. When I hiked in the Grand Canyon, for example, I was in awe of the geological process that shaped the canyon.

Adventures, of course, are not limited to hiking. There are many other choices, such as camping, volunteering in a foreign environment and travelling to different countries. In my opinion, adventures are more enjoyable with family or a few friends. There is a sense of bonding that one only gets through spending time together in outdoor adventures. For example, when I was in Boy Scouts, I often went on weekend camping trips with my friends. When I came back from a Boy Scouts camping trip, I often was eager to go outside more and explore the parks and nature around me.

Next fall, I will attend college. In the meantime, though, I hope to make the most of my summer to explore and travel. Now, I am planning on hiking and camping out in Maine. When I visited Maine last fall, I was amazed by how beautiful it was, and I really hope to enjoy the beauty of nature.

10 . Summer vacation is the most awaited time in a student’s life. It is time to relax and _______ the world around us.

I visited Bulgaria this summer holidays, where I _______ with my good friend. At the beginning of the first day we were having a great time, you know, much _______, no work. Spending the whole day on the beach was really _______. Everything was going in the best way, except for the _______ evening.

When it became much colder outside, we _______ to buy something to eat. I left our bags in front of the hotel and my buddy Gosia asked our teachers to have a look at our _______ once in a while. Having ensured they were _______ , we finally went to the nearest shop.

When we came back, it seemed nobody _______ about our bags, in which we had our cosmetics and clothes! Members of the ________ as well as teachers went into the ________, leaving our bags alone. ________, Gosia and I ran towards the front of the building only to find Gosia’s bag was in the right place while mine ________!

My teachers were really ashamed about the fact they had ________ about my luggage. So not only were they really ________ , but they also did their best to find the ________ and my bag.

Firstly I was really stressed and I thought it would ________ my great holidays as I had thought but ________ both my bags and the thief were ________ the next day!
