1 . If you like sun and heat, summer may be the best time to visit Italy, when you can expect lots of both! During summertime in Italy, you can enjoy plenty of bright sunshine, visit one of its many beaches, join in a summer festival, attend outdoor concerts and plays, and have more hours of daylight for adventures.

Summer is the height of tourist season in popular cities like Rome, Florence, and Venice, whose rich cultures and fine dining experiences offer visitors a chance to truly see and taste the beauty of Italian living. Keep in mind that in these cities, as with most places in Italy, you have to spend a lot of time outdoors in order to see them properly. Many museums are not air-conditioned, so ducking into a museum might not be a guaranteed way to cool off. If air-conditioning is a necessity for you, be sure to book a hotel that has it. Most hotels, even budget ones, offer it now, but be sure to verify (核实) — some might ask you to pay extra for the service.

Summer temperatures in Italy, especially in the south, can rise above 100 degrees (37.78 degrees centigrade) for days in a row. The climate is generally dry but central and northern Italy can be humid and afternoon thunderstorms are not unusual. To escape the heat, visitors can head to the beaches or mountains — be sure to check Italy Travel Weather before you begin packing for your trip.

Chances are that Italian cities can be extremely hot in summer, so it’s important for tourists to pack for the seasonal heat as well as be prepared for the sudden summer showers and thunderstorms.

However, many religious sites, including the Vatican Museums in Rome, won’t allow you in wearing shorts, miniskirts or sleeveless shirts.

D.You are requested to pay extra for the good service at hotels.
4. Where is the text probably taken from?

2 . From the moment you arrive at Houtong Village in northern Taiwan, you’ll have no trouble knowing who the real stars are. There’s a cat-shaped bridge, pet food bowls on the side of the walkways, street signs with cat pictures, cat-themed cafes and, of course, furry friends wandering freely everywhere.

In the early 1900s, Houtong, in New Taipei City, was the biggest and most technologically advanced coal-mining site in Taiwan. It was a prosperous town with about 6,000 residents and workers, before the mine fell into disuse in 1990.

As most young residents moved away for better opportunities, Houtong became a sleepy village with about 100 residents. But in 2010, Houtong gained popularity after a cat-lover and photographer started blogging about the village’s growing stray (无主的) cat population.

Houtong was transformed into a cat-lover sight while also providing a source of income for local villagers. Many of the stray cats, now given affectionate nicknames, are taken care of by local villagers as well as a troop of volunteers.

In addition to the village’s many cute kitty-themed shops and cafes, the local government has also seized the opportunity to highlight its long history.

An award-winning pedestrian cat bridge was built. A cat information and education center opened in 2014, featuring higher cat walkways in front of the building. A museum park dedicated to the town’s former mining life opened in 2010, later hosting a cat lantern festival in 2012.

But Houtong, now under the spotlight, isn’t completely perfect. According to local reports, the town has become an attraction for those looking for a place to abandon their unwanted pets. During the most recent survey, it was estimated that the village is now home to about 286 cats—50 heads more than two years ago.

With the constant patting and feeding from visitors, some also flagged concerns about the health of the furry residents. The department works with local residents and volunteers to vaccinate (接种疫苗) the cats and provide regular medical treatment. Signs have been set up around town advising visitors how to behave while also pleading for the pet owners’ responsibility.

1. Why does Houtong become popular recently?
A.Because it is a town with the biggest coal-mining site.
B.Because it is a town with a long history.
C.Because it is a town where the mine falls into disuse.
D.Because it is a town featuring cats culture.
2. What does Houtong worry about nowadays?
A.Young residents moved far away for better opportunities.
B.The development of the village cannot meet the demands.
C.There are not enough volunteers in the village.
D.The cats are not in good health condition.
3. What does the underlined word “pleading” in the last paragraph mean?
A.Applying.B.Begging.
C.Fighting.D.Registering.

3 . I'm a travel addict. I think it is very exciting to go to new places, experience different situations and see unfamiliar things. Here's what I have come up with about why travel is so fascinating.

To start with, whether we know it or not, every day is filled with anxiety about things that we don't need to worry about in the first place. Going to new places is a chance to escape from our everyday worries. For example, after a whole day at work, I am often physically and mentally exhausted and start to worry about things. However, the moment I get on the train or bus to my next destination. I forget all my tiredness and worries.

Next is one of the most basic concepts in travel: movement. I always take along books to read on my train trips, but in the end, only about five pages or so ever get read, because 1 just stare out of the window at the things whooshing by. Just the ability to move is pleasing. Movement also means that we are going to new places and seeing new things. But why is that important? Because experiencing new situations, people and ideas could help us to learn about new things and grow, especially when we don't have the burden of everyday worries. I have never gone on a trip and come back as the same person; I have always changed and grown through travel.

So take every type of trip you can, at every chance you get, and you will not only experience more of the world, but will become a happier person with a richer set of experiences.

1. The text is mainly about___________.
A.how to have a comfortable life
B.how to become a travel addict
C.why travel is so attractive
D.how to get rich experiences.
2. What does the underlined word "exhausted" mean in the second paragraph?
A.AngryB.Excited.
C.Tired.D.Weak.
3. Why doesn't the author read much on train trips?
A.Because he doesn't like reading on the train
B.Because he is distracted by the scenery.
C.Because he is too busy working to read.
D.Because he is too tired to read
4. According to the author traveling to new places offers all of the following benefits EXCEPT that___________.
A.it helps us to learn new things
B.it makes us happier people
C.it helps us to get more experiences
D.it gives us more chances to read

4 . When you go on a trip to America, you will see the word Motel on signs and notice boards. It is made up of "motor" and "hotel" and it is really a hotel for people who arrive by car(however, you don't need a car to stay at one)You have to pay when you arrive for your room, which usually has a bath. Meals are not provided but there will certainly be a cafeteria. Americans eat a lot of salads and sandwiches. Along the main roads there are a lot of motels. Each tries to offer more than the others. Some provide television in every bedroom: others have swimming pools and so on. Motels are especially useful when you are in the country, far from a town or city. You will also find them in big national parks.

In these great national parks, you may meet guests you don't expect to see. An American friend told me a short story. In the middle of a moonless night, she heard strange noises outside her motel window in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. Thinking it might be a thief, she jumped out of bed, opened the door and crept towards a dark shadow. As she got close, she saw the thief. She was dreadfully frightened: it wasn't a human thief — it was a big black bear. The bear was turning over some empty tins with its paws, looking for tasty bits of food. My friend decided to leave that particular thief alone!

There are also, of course, places called "rooming houses", where they provide lodges(客房). You will see such signs as Tourists or Rooms Rent, and you could try one of these. A word of warning — looking for a room in New York during the tourist season is like looking for gold on the moon!

1. Motels provide all the following EXCEPT____________.
A.bathB.swimming pools
C.TVD.meals
2. Paragraph 2 mainly tells us___________.
A.an interesting story
B.bears usually look for food at night
C.the experience of the author's friend
D.we may meet animals in national parks
3. From the last paragraph, we can learn that in New York during the tourist season___________.
A.tourists can find gold there
B.it is difficult to find a room there
C.tourists can have a sweet dream there
D.there is a warning for tourists to New York

5 . My friend and I decided to go to Italy for a holiday and we decided to travel there without going through a travel agency. You know, you would be submerged(淹没)in crowds of tourists and lose lots of opportunities to get familiar with the country more closely. We started to think over our trip and managed to come up with a free tour of Italy.

The trip was not very long but it was still very pleasant. We look forward to going there again! Of course, we spent lots of time arranging the trip, but it was well worth it! Of course I was afraid that something would go wrong and I was especially anxious about my visa, but everything went quite smoothly in the end.

The most difficult part was getting a visa without an invitation. In the Italian consulate(领事馆), one must hand in some official paper proving that one has a hotel booked for oneself in order to get the visa. Then we had to solve the ticket problem. Airlines often sell cheap tickets and we bought ours far in advance. The next step was to book a hotel. We finally booked a hotel about 30 km away from the heart of Rome and it was the perfect choice for our trip.

Every day we took a train that carried us to the heart of Rome. Our big house, which was surrounded by the forest, was a rare place for the fresh air and complete silence, beautiful views, hospitable hosts, comfortable living conditions delighting us to no end. Besides this, we were very lucky that our mistress, was Russian. She gave us a lot of advice that was of great use. She recommended us what transport we should choose and which best places we should go to.

Don't be afraid to plan your trip by yourself. It's not difficult! The only thing I'll say right now is that we really enjoyed traveling by ourselves. We walked with a map and a guidebook to wherever we wanted and we even met some of our fellow countrymen on the way just two or three times. So if you're also planning a 'single' trip, don't forget to take a Russian-Italian phrasebook as people in Italy prefer to speak in their native tongue.

1. Why does the author want to go to Italy again?
A.He didn't stay in Italy long enough.
B.Italy has a lot of attractions
C.His friend invited him there.
D.He had a great time there.
2. From the text we can know the author_________.
A.met with a lot of his countrymen in Italy
B.likes being accompanied by tour guides
C.enjoys travelling everywhere in the world
D.advises us to arrange trips by ourselves
3. Which of the following questions has NOT been answered in the passage?
A.Why did the author decide to go to Italy for a holiday for the first time?
B.How did the author get his visa
C.How did the author prepare for his trip?
D.Why did the author decide not to follow a travel agency?

6 . There are various reasons why people travel. Some tourists go to see battlefields or other historic remains. Others are looking for culture, or simply want to have their pictures taken in front of famous places. Most European tourists are looking for a sunny beach to lie on.

Northern Europeans are willing to pay a lot of money for the sun because they have so little of it. People of cities like London, Copenhagen and Amsterdam spend much of their winter in the dark because the days are so short, and much of the rest of the year in the rain. This is the reason why the Mediterrancan has always attracted them.

Every summer many people travel to Mediterranean resorts and beaches for their vacation. They all come for the same reason: sun! The huge crowds mean lots of money for the economics of Mediterranean countries. Italy’s 30,000 hotels are booked without a break every summer. And 13 million people camp on French beaches, parks and roadsides. About 37 million tourists visit there yearly, or one tourist for each person living in Spain.

But there are signs that the area is getting more tourism than it can deal with. The Mediterrancan is already one of the most polluted seas on earth. None of these, however, is ruining anyone’s fun. Obviously, they don’t go there for clean water. They allow traffic jams and seem to like crowded beaches. They don’t even mind the pollution. No matter how dirty the water is, the coastline still looks beautiful. And as long as the sun shines, ifs still better than sitting in the cold rain in Berlin, London, or Olso.

A.they are interested in different cultural and social customs

2. The underlined part in paragraph 3, “one tourist for each person living in Spain” suggests________.
A.all the 37 million people living in Spain are tourists
B.there are a large number of tourists visiting Spain
C.every person living in Spain has to take care of a tourist
D.every family in Spain is visited by a tourist every year
3. According to the text, which of the following might ruin the tourists’ fun at Mediterranean resorts and beaches?
A.Polluted water.B.Crowded buses.C.Rainy weather.D.Traffic jams.
4. What is the main idea of the text?
A.People travel for different reasons.B.Travelling causes a lot of problems.
C.Northern Europeans travel for sun.D.Europeans are fond of travelling.

10 . Nowadays more and more people like to travel, especially when vacations come. A great number of people rush out of their homes or companies to travelling spots. They either drive or take a bus, a train, a ship and so on. Some even ride bikes.

However, there is another way of travelling — poorism. People have a tour in the poorest areas of the world. Some people may take a one-day poor tour, and some even pay to stay in very poor neighborhoods to experience the lowest living standards in the world. Poorism tours take place around the world, and not just in the third world countries. You can, for instance, tour New York neighborhoods in the Bronx, in the Bund of Shanghai. Such tours can take people into the heart of poor areas within some large and rich cities. These tours may awaken people to pay more attention to long-standing poverty, or the effects of war.

Some suggest that tours in the poor areas can raise social care. And the money from the tour can be donated to help the people there.

1. What's the meaning of the underlined word “poorism” in the second paragraph?
